FAQ: What happened to Jonestown after 18 November 1978?

What happened to Jonestown after 18 November 1978?

The isolation in the dense jungle of Guyana’s Northwest District which made it attractive to Peoples Temple has worked against its preservation. While the Guyana government maintained it initially and allowed Hmong refugees from Laos to live there for a few years in the early 1980s, the buildings have since been looted and abandoned, and the jungle is reclaiming the land. Visitors to the site in 1998 found few remains of the community, and the intervening years have served to further bury them. Proposals have been made to memorialize the site, but none have evolved past the planning stage.
