| The Living Word: A Brief Description |
|||||
The Living Word: An Apostolic Monthly, authorized by Jim Jones, premiered in July 1972. One of the earliest serial publications by Peoples Temple, its primary purpose was from inception to raise money, largely by drawing poor blacks to attend meetings or, as a first step, to tune in to Jones' radio broadcasts up and down the West Coast. Unlike its successor, The Peoples Forum, which debuted the following year, it did not in any way attempt to alter the political or – in most respects – the religious viewpoints of its readers. For one take on The Living Word experience, see “The Living Word and Me: The Limits of Anarchism in Peoples Temple,” prepared by the magazine's Editor-In-Chief, Garrett Lambrev, which can be found at http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/AboutJonestown/JonestownReport/Volume7/refllambrev1.htm.
