Remembrances

“Karen Carr probably went early to help with child care, as she was one of the children's workers in San Francisco, and many children were sent to Guyana before their parents, sometimes months before. Karen was the sister of Claudia (Norris) Bouquet, 22, and Tim "Night" Jones, 19; their mother was Violatt Esther Dillard, 51. Karen was the baby of the family, an exuberant and lively, sometimes strong-willed teenager who gravitated early to working with children, which she enjoyed. Here she is behind Lisa Whitmire and Danny Beck, with Diana McKnight, in the children's group photo taken in 1975 or early 1976: In Jonestown, Karen continued her junior high school classes, and helped on work crews, including Shirley's crew (in the herb garden?) as time permitted. She was good friends with Dee Dee Duckett and Donna Briggs; the three were so close that Jim ordered, "Break them up." It was Instruction No. 66 on "Jim's Instructions since March 17, 1978" a list of his decrees kept by Penny Dupont, and typed up for him around the end of May so he would be able to remember his own mandates, I guess. There were a total of 161 "rulings." RIP, Karen, may you and your good buddies be with the angels now. ” - Kathryn Barbour
