“Luberta "Birdie" Arnold was a tall lady of generous girth, a trouper on our cross-country bus trips and a long-time member. When I say she was "a trouper" let me expand on that. I was on the trip with her when our 11 buses descended on an ill-equipped rest stop somewhere in the South, and soon clogged all the toilets. We were furiously washing up at the sinks when the maintenance man came in and was a bit abashed as he went about his work, since no one paid him any attention, we were so glad to be able to bathe at sinks. Finally, as we prepared to depart, there was Birdie, standing in front of the building like a statue, wrapped in a blanket, not moving. She was constipated and her face was the picture of misery. Jim had the buses start their engines, and we sat there, idling, as she stood, for about five more minutes, I think. She finally came to her bus and got on. At Jonestown, she worked in the senior center providing care. She came to Jonestown without relatives and was one of our singles. Taken too soon. RIP, Birdie, may you rest with the angels. ” - Kathryn Barbour
