Looking Back At Some Of The 1977 Opportunity High Cobras ” - Coach Ron Cabral

“This was one of the players on the 1977 Opportunity High School Cobra baseball team. ” - Anonymous

“Ricky Johnson was Frances Johnson's son and had no relatives in Jonestown. His mother was living in the San Francisco Temple with us on November 18, 1978, and I was in touch with her for months afterward. The last I knew she had moved to Reno, NV. Frances was a working actress and had appeared on Sanford & Son. Ricky was a tall, strong, handsome youth, athletic and sociable. Ron Cabral, his coach at Opportunity HS, and Judy Bebelaar, another teacher at Opportunity High, published "And Then They Were Gone," a book about the Temple high school kids. It has already won Ten Awards! So please ask your local library to add it to their collection!! Edith Roller's journals only have one entry for Ricky, from November of 1976, when he was brought up for failing to show up for his security shift on the back door. In the discussion, Ricky's wife is referred to several times, but her name is not given. She was a member of the Temple, though, and took part in the discussion. Ricky is listed as one of the "singles" in Jonestown, so they must have separated before he went. In Jonestown, on the Jobs list, Wood Crew is all that's listed by Ricky's name. Indeed, the building pace was fast and furious as there was nowhere near enough housing for all the arrivals who flooded into Jonestown in the course of two months (July and August 1977). They just kept on coming, so the work of the Wood Crew was never done. Rest in peace, Dear Ricky. You deserved a long and happy life, and would have done your mother proud, I know. May your memory never fade, and may you be in the arms of the angels now.” - Kathryn (Tropp) Barbour
