Remembrances |

“Geneva Beal's story was recounted to us in a service by Jim, who used it to show how cruelly treated were domestic workers in Mississippi. Geneva did ironing, and one particular customer, not pleased with the results, threw the whole bushel on the ground and demanded that she do it over again. Jim had her stand, and fumed to the congregation that, "some of you have never even spoken to her." I cringed in my seat in the choir. I was one who had never spoken to her, or even noticed her.
Worse yet, I wrote about her and the story that Jim used in the service, in a book that was published on the tenth anniversary of the Jonestown Suicide/Massacre, though I had forgotten her name by then! Thanks to this site, I was able to put a name with the face I remembered. ” - Kathryn Barbour |
