Remembrances |

“Melanie was a very good friend. We enjoyed our times walking to and from each other's homes in Fremont, we were carefree tomboyish girls. One journey was a walk through Niles Canyon to visit her brother ... we got a ride back home. going to A's games with her and Wesley and my family. I hear Carole King and you always come into my thoughts. miss ya ” - Robin Johnson“Melanie was my younger sister by 8 years, so we never hung out much, as she quite naturally opted to wreak havoc with Melinda, who was only 3+ years older. I remember her as always happy and laughing, even as a young baby. Our family took frequent vacations, to Yellowstone, the Redwoods, Crater Lake, the Gold country, AND the yearly grand daddy of all family vacations (coincidentally, to see my dad's parents) was the yearly summer trek with Mom and Dad, 5 kids, and whatever dogs or other livestock that happened to jump in at the last minute, through the deserts, over the Rockies (no relation to my Mom) through the Black Hills, past Wall Drug, winding up in Mitchell South Dakota. According to my Bazooka Joe odometer, it was just shy of 70,000 miles one way. We'd camp out one night, and stay in a motel the next: 3 rooms,1 each for parents, girls and boys. Heaven with TV, free ice and pillow fights. These trips usually took 2 weeks, stopping for every 60 ft. Lizard, Sands Of Mystery, 2 headed cows, 30 eyed potatoes, Outlaw Hideouts too numerous to mention, Genuine Covered Wagon Museums dating back to the 1930's.... We stopped at em all. I used to think my dad loved all this western stuff till I noticed he never got out and was happy to "rest his eyes" till we returned. Through all these trips which I now regard as some of the best and wildest adventures of my life.. C'mon, could you pass up Custers 3rd to Last Stand?....Fresh beefalo burgers that tasted exactly like hamburger ? ..at only twice the price,We became a good old American family and with the exception of flaring tempers when the Salt Flats hit 120, I can't imagine a family loving each other more... oh,and the one day a year when Melanie and Wesley were the same age in years, being born a day short of a year apart... those days, blood was often spilled,.. or at least Melanie's soda. ” - Harlan Breidenbach |
