Remembrances |

“Joe Helle lived with us at West House in Redwood Valley (one of the largest of the communal houses of Peoples Temple) in the mid-70s. he had a paralytic condition of the legs, which worsened over time to the point that he couldn't walk at all, and I wonder how he coped in Jonestown. He worked as a security guard at posts where you could sit down. I think he was adopted by Jack Beam in order to leave the states legally and go to Guyana. He was fiercely loyal. Around 1975 or so he gave us the song, "God's not dead. He's still alive" which was sung in practically every service after that. His mother's name was Jesse Beagle. She called him "Joel". ” - Kathryn Barbour |
