“I'm so very hurt, sad and angry. I knew Valerie as my cousin because her Aunt Ella Mae Jones (she was my Godmother) and my Grandmother, Jeanette Louise Smith were best friends, my Grandmother along with my younger cousin were members of Peoples Temple for a short period of time, possibly a year? I don't recall how long but I remember some things that occurred as a young girl of color in 1978. It is so heartbreaking to finally discover Valerie's name because I had been told her body was never found. My Godmother believed in this cult until her last breath in the late 80's or early 90's. It is sad too that when I visited my Godmother's place of residence in Houston, TX in order to attend her funeral. I was frightened to see my Godmother STILL had pictures of Jim Jones everywhere and it was an disheartening, sad, confusing and sight to see. (The home I visited was Valerie's mother's place of residence also in Houston, TX). I was able to finally find my cousin's name due to Sundance TV channel documentary, Jonestown: Terror In The Jungle. (biologically not related but family due to friendship of my Grandmother and Valerie's aunt who was my Godmother) God rest my cousin's soul, ALL others who perished in this tragedy, and prayers & blessings to ALL who had a meeting, relationship or one moment afflicted by Peoples Temple including myself. Continued prayers and blessings for everyone suffering and effected by this memory.” - Michelle Smith
