“Oh the irony and tragedy that she escaped from Hamburg and the Nazis and death in a concentration camp only to be manipulated to choose, in freedom, a similar fate. It is truly heartbreaking. ” - Maria

“Lisa lived in Hamburg, Germany where she experience Krystallnacht, Hitler's assault on Jews in 1938, before escaping to the US. She had a keen social conscience. I did not realize her July 14 birthday was so close to Carolyn Layton's (born July 13). This has me seeing similarities between these two women, and also qualities that might have attracted Larry Layton to Carolyn before they ever heard of Peoples Temple. Both women were extremely stoical, self-sufficient, and idealistic, but pragmatic. Both were selfless to a point frankly beyond my understanding or comprehension. I hope their family ties brought them together and they were able to share their thoughts with each other. May they be together on the other side, keeping watch over all of us, the wayward ones, as we remember each of them. ” - Kathryn Barbour

“Lisa Layton was the mother of Larry Layton, and had three other children, only one of whom, Deborah, was also a Temple member. I highly recommend Debby's book, "Seductive Poison," for anyone who wants to know (1) more about Lisa, a great lady by any measure, and (2) just how hard it was for anyone in Guyana to leave the Temple. Debby planned her escape carefully, had staff privileges, was in charge of the Lamaha Gardens house in Georgetown, and had made contact with the U.S. Ambassador. She still had to run a gauntlet to get out of the country. Debby went straight to Washington, D.C., where she told anyone who would listen to her in the U.S. Congress and State Department just how dire the situation was in Jonestown, and that the threat of mass suicide (which had already been made publicly by Jones) was real and needed to be taken seriously. She tried, and I'll always be grateful to her for doing her level best to save all of them. ” - Kathryn Barbour
