Specifically, please let me know whether the FBI has a specific policy with regard to identifying the deceased from Jamestown [Jonestown] and, if not, whether this is within FBI jurisdiction for action. Also, I wonder if Mr. [Kenneth Wooden<\/span>] has contacted the FBI, and if so, what your position with regard to his inquiry has been.<\/p>\n

Dear President Carter:<\/p>\n

As the attached Chicago Sun-Times series documents, one year after the mass murders of 276 innocent children in the jungle of Guyana, at the hands of Jim Jones, 210 still remain unidentified. Many of these children were in Guyana illegally: The state of California bears grave responsibility for this. Until an identification process is carried out, parents are left to bear the double grief of not only losing their children, but also knowing their little ones were buried in a barbaric mass burial in Oakland, California, and no one cares enough to pursue their identity.<\/p>\n

The FBI told me that they have neither the time nor the funds to trace down the hospitals where the children were born. Yet, with no effort, I was able to find the hospitals, birth records and footprints of five children killed in Guyana. One complete set of prints was personally hand-carried to the FBI. Nothing came of it because they claimed they needed the originals. To date no effort has been made to acquire the prints from a Trenton, NJ hospital. At best, they simply don’t care. I also have videotapes from NBC News (which filmed the children the night before and the day of their deaths) which could be used by the FBI if there was interest.<\/p>\n

Out of basic human rights, decency and a love for children, I hope that I can call on your compassion to intervene, publicly or privately, to Judge [William] Webster, the Director of the FBI, so that the agency will find the meager funds and time necessary to ensure the one right of all children, as expressed in the United Nations Charter in this, the twilight of the International Year of the Child \u2013 “That all children shall have a name and nationality”.<\/u><\/p>\n
