This tape comprises two segments, Jim Jones reading the news of the day for October 8, 1978, and a partial Peoples Rally, almost certainly later the same day. <\/p>\n

The Peoples Rally consists primarily of a discipline session, in which several young boys are called to the floor to explain their stealing of underwear and socks from each other, and numerous adults are cited for infractions such as not returning tools after a day\u2019s work and for being \u201coverweight, they gain weight, or they\u2019re not losing enough weight.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the recording ends, Jim Jones speaks of the death of Jonestown resident Plickards Norris \u2013 who unfortunately called upon the name of Jesus as he was dying \u2013 and of the bravery of another dying resident, Lisa Layton, who would die of cancer before the end of the month.<\/p>\n

The news tapes consist of two commentaries about the Soviet Union \u2013 one on its economic recovery since World War II and its certainty to pass the United States; and a second on the Soviet legal system and constitutional protections of its people \u2013 which bracket shorter news stories. The reading likely comes from a Soviet news source, and it is difficult to tell which of the politically-charged adjectives come from the text and which come from Jim Jones. The United States is uniformly the seat of monopoly capitalism and imperialism, its African allies are invariably racist and the Israeli state is consistently aggressive. The USSR, on the other hand, is the avant garde of liberation in the world \u2013 a phrase Jones uses many times in these newscasts \u2013 and its allies are united in the \u201cstruggle for peace and international security.\u201d <\/p>\n

The reading includes a single mention of the likelihood of nuclear war, a reference inserted by Jones himself.<\/p>\n

In connection with the Federal Bureau of Investigation\u2019s investigation into the assassination of U.S. Congressman LEO J. RYAN at Port Kaituma, Guyana, South America, on November 18, 1978, a tape recording was obtained. This tape recording was located in Jonestown, Guyana, South America, and was turned over to U.S. Officials in Guyana and subsequently transported to the United States.<\/p>\n

On June 4, 1979, Special Agent (name deleted) reviewed the tape numbered 1B93-110. This tape was found to contain the following:<\/p>\n
