Throughout its relationship with Joseph Mazor \u2013 a relationship which was tenuous and complicated as any in its history \u2013 Peoples Temple made tapes of conversations involving the private detective. While some of the transcripts were made directly from a recording made by the Temple, several others were reconstructed, and still others have an unknown origin.<\/p>\n
Who, for example, would have made the tape of the meeting<\/a> of September 5, 1978 with Joseph Mazor, Temple attorney Mark Lane, film producer Donald Freed, and Charles Garry\u2019s assistant Pat Richartz in attendance? Who would have made the tape of the meeting<\/a> a month later between Mazor and Lane? While all participants had positive relations with the Temple \u2013 at least the time of the recordings \u2013 none was a member, and each one made statements that could have been held against them in case of a falling-out with Jim Jones.<\/p>\n The first tape, a reconstructed conversation between Joe Mazor and Temple member Carol McCoy, is from late 1977, when Mazor was still associated with the Concerned Relatives.
