He may be reached at <a href=\"mailto:joelxthomas@hotmail.com\">joelxthomas@hotmail.com<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Q042 Death Tape, recorded during the final hours of Peoples Temple\u2019s life on November 18, 1978, is one of the most analyzed and controversial artifacts of Jonestown. This system is what Jones used to broadcast news and announcements, and to call people to the pavilion. Jones\u2019 mic was plugged into a Shure M67 4-channel Mic mixer (Figure 5). Also plugged into the mixer was the mic which was passed around in the crowd for people to speak with Jones. This unmistakably recognizable PA system is considered a classic of the 1970&#8217;s. It appears in numerous movies from\u00a0the period, such as the &#8220;battle of the bands contest&#8221; scene in the 1978 movie <em>Cheech &amp; Chong&#8217;s Up in Smoke<\/em>, and in the 1987 film <em>The Running Man<\/em>, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It also made up part of the audio arsenal employed by the Beatles \u00a0 when they played before 55,000 screaming fans at\u00a0Shea Stadium in New York City on August 15, 1965.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113212\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113212\" style=\"width: 569px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113212\" src=\"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/13-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"569\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Vocal Master PA can be seen on the left side of the stage during the band\u2019s performance during Congressman Leo Ryan&#8217;s visit the night of November 17 (Figure 13).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113213\" style=\"width: 714px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/14-15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113213\" src=\"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/14-15-300x128.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"714\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Vocal Master&#8217;s two speaker columns sat in the back of the pavilion stage behind the brass section on the left and the keyboards on the right (Figures 14 &amp; 15).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This Band PA was necessary so that the speakers could be placed behind the band to monitor the singer&#8217;s vocals during performance. Using the Pavilion PA system for musical stage shows would have made it impossible for anyone onstage to hear the vocals. During the November 17 performance, only Deanna\u2019s vocals were plugged into the PA to be amplified. This can be heard in the archive footage: Deanna&#8217;s voice gets louder or softer as a function of the location of the camera relative to the proximity of the speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Deanna was singing into a Shure 548S Unidyne IV microphone (Figure 17).<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"unidirectional\"><\/a><figure id=\"attachment_113218\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113218\" style=\"width: 693px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/18-19.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113218\" src=\"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/18-19-300x156.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"693\" height=\"372\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figures 18 &amp; 19<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>This was the same microphone Congressman Ryan used in his speech to the community with (Figure 18).\u00a0The microphone was a &#8220;unidirectional mic,&#8221; which is to say that it only receives audio from a specific direction. It is equipped with a thumb-operated &#8220;On\/Off&#8221; switch on its barrel (Figure 19).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113222\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113222\" style=\"width: 579px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113222\" src=\"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/22-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 20<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the November 17 performance, this PA sound system was disassembled and moved to the right side of the stage, where it can be seen on November 18 (Figure 20).
