Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The series of newspaper articles in the San Francisco Examiner<\/em><\/a> written by religion editor and Episcopal priest \u2013 and future bete noir of the Temple \u2013 Lester Kinsolving has debuted a few days earlier, and a Ukiah radio station has given Jim Jones a chance to answer the charges. In this 10-minute segment \u2013 it is unknown how long Jones has spoken before the recording begins \u2013 the Temple leader both defends the church, and criticizes the reporter for what Jones describes as \u201cbaseless charges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones\u2019 defense includes a description of the services and programs which the Temple provides, ranging from senior citizen homes to animal shelters to drug rehabilitation efforts to support for college students. He also vehemently denies that anyone in the church was responsible for the suicide of a woman whom Kinsolving had profiled.<\/p>\n

He defends the First Amendment \u2013 both the freedom of the press and \u201cthe right of religious assembly\u201d \u2013 and says Kinsolving can write whatever he wants, but he has the responsibility to tell the truth.<\/p>\n

In connection with the Federal Bureau of Investigation\u2019s investigation into the assassination of U.S. Congressman LEO J. RYAN at Port Kaituma, Guyana, South America, on November 18, 1978, a tape recording was obtained. This tape recording was located in Jonestown, Guyana, South America, and was turned over to U.S. Officials in Guyana and subsequently transported to the United States.<\/p>\n

On March 1, 1979, Special Agent (name deleted) reviewed the tape numbered 1 B 47 \u2013 #21. This tape was found to contain the following:<\/p>\n

JIM JONES lecturing on harassment received by the People\u2019s Temple while in Ukiah, unjustified criticism received by the Temple from the \u201cSan Francisco Examiner.\u201d Side B of the tape was blank with the exception of a child\u2019s voice which appears on a brief segment.<\/p>\n

This tape was reviewed, and nothing was contained thereon which was considered to be of evidentiary nature or beneficial to the investigation of Congressman RYAN.<\/p>\n
