Conoff visited Layton in Georgetown prison February 1, 1980.<\/p>\n<p>REF: GEORGETOWN 0075<\/p>\n<p>1. Conoff visited Layton in Georgetown prison February 1, 1980. Interview was conducted by Consul, who delivered a letter sent c\/o Embassy. Layton stated that he continues to receive outside mail regularly.<\/p>\n<p>2. As per reftel, prison authorities had agreed to Embassy request for inspection of Layton&#8217;s cell and other prison facilities. Conoffs were accompanied on inspection tour by Superintendent of Prisons, and found size of cells adequate.<\/p>\n<p>3. Layton showed no signs of deliberate physical or psychological abuse, and Conoffs found his general physical condition and appearance improved. In response to Consul\u2019s questions, Layton stated that his outside meal plan was satisfactory, and that he was continuing to receive regular vitamin supplements and outdoor exercise periods. In response to Layton&#8217;s inquiry about the status of legal proceeding against him, Consul stated that local newspapers had reported that formal indictment was imminent.
