Man<\/strong>: (unintelligible beginning) people fill out. It says that I, Martha Wade, certify that all monies which I have given to Peoples Temple Christian Church or any of its members were intended by me to be a gift to the church, without any restrictions whatever. Any gifts that I have made, including the gift of August of seven hundred and five dollars and thirty-six cents, was made because of my belief and appreciation of the wonderful human service ministry of the church. I have made these gifts knowing of the possible competing claims of my daughter and other relatives, which I have done so freely, voluntarily, and without any duress or pressure whatever. I\u2019ve had this explained to me in full. Do you understand that, Martha? Do you want\u2013<\/p>\n

Martha Wade<\/strong>: Yeah, I understand.<\/p>\n

Man<\/strong>: Is that true?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: I\u2013 I (unintelligible) this morning.<\/p>\n

Man<\/strong>: Well, then, why don\u2019t you sign these two\u2013 these uh\u2013 please sign these (unintelligible word) like everybody else does, and then we\u2019ll get the things\u2013<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Well, I can\u2019t write.<\/p>\n

(overlapping voices)<\/p>\n

Man<\/strong>: Put your mark right there.<\/p>\n

(tape edit) (Pause)<\/p>\n

Man 2<\/strong>: Is it ready?<\/p>\n

Woman<\/strong>: Yeah, it\u2019s ready to go.<\/p>\n

Man 2<\/strong>: Martha? We want to give permission, to\u2013 We want your permission to tape you, put you on a tape. Is that okay?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: I ain\u2019t gone\u2013 I ain\u2019t going to speak well.<\/p>\n

Man<\/strong> 3: Martha. Uh, Martha, just\u00ad\u2013 just say yes and no to the fol\u2013 You just say yes and no to the following. He\u2013 He\u2019s going to read this to you, and then you just say yes at the end, and say, yes, this is my desire. That\u2019s all you have to say.<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Mmm-hmm. Mmm-hmm. [Yes]<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Martha, today is uh\u2013 is Sunday, October 26, 1975, and you and I are meeting in the office of the church, the Peoples Temple Christian Church, at 1366 South Alvarado. And I\u2013 And we\u2019ve been talking about uh, some, uh, money that you gave to the church in August, and you\u2019ve made it quite clear to us that this money was intended to be a gift<\/em> to the church, and I wanted to make sure you understood this, so we\u2013 we don\u2019t want any difficulties with any relatives, \u2018cause we want to do right by\u2013 by people. If people uh\u2013 And so I wanna\u2013 I wanna go over a\u2013 a statement that I\u2019m gonna ask you to sign, uh, Martha, and I want to make sure you understand it, okay? You\u2019re being taped now. Is that okay?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Okay.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: We have your consent to being taped?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Okay.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Okay. Here\u2019s a document that says at the top, Acknowledgement of Gift. Then it says, I, Martha Wade, certify \u2013 that means, I state, that\u2019s my position \u2013 that any and all monies which I have given to Peoples Temple Christian Church or any of its members were intended<\/em> by me to be a gift<\/em> to the church, without any restrictions whatever. That means that whatever you ever handed to anybody in the church was intended to be a gift to go to the work of the church, its human services ministries. Is that right?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Any gifts that I have made, including a gift in August of seven hundred and five dollars and thirty-six cents check was made because of my belief and appreciation of the wonderful human service ministry of the church. I have made these gifts knowing<\/em> of the possible competing claims of my daughter and other relatives. In other words, you\u2019ve made these gifts knowing that other people in your family may uh, not wish that to be so, you\u2019ve still done it anyway. Is that correct?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Mmm. That\u2019s correct.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: And\u2013 and you\u2019ve done so freely and voluntarily, and without any duress or pressure whatever, and that this has been explained to you in full. Is this true?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Yes.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Are all these statements that I\u2019ve read to you true, Martha?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: All of it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Okay. Well, why don\u2019t you sign right here, uh, this copy and when\u2013 and then two underneath it, Martha, and that\u2019s exactly what I read to you. And then we\u2019ll be notarizing it\u2013<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: (unintelligible under man) here.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Right here, where it says\u2013<\/p>\n

Man 4<\/strong>: Tell her to put the \u201cX\u201d in the middle.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Put the \u201cX\u201d right in the middle of\u2013 right\u2013 right here. Excuse me, I\u2019m sorry, right here.<\/p>\n

Man 4<\/strong>: Right here, and then I\u2019ll fix it (unintelligible word)<\/p>\n

(Pause)<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Okay. And\u2013 and you can understand it, when we\u2019re talking to you, what we\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Yeah. I know. I understand it.<\/p>\n

(Pause, low conversation)<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Yeah, I understand.<\/p>\n

Man 4:<\/strong> (unintelligible word) gonna record two witnesses, so it might indicate that some of the people that were here who are (unintelligible word) on the tape who are listening to this.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Martha, the two\u2013 there\u2019re gonna be two people witnessing this. One will be uh, (Pause) Paul Flowers and the other will be Terri Buford. Okay? They\u2019re going to be witnesses to the fact that this \u201cX\u201d is your signature. Is that okay? We just want that on the tape, so there\u2019s no question about it. This is Terri and this is Paul. Is that okay?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Mmm-hmm.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Okay, thanks. And Paul, if you would sign underneath her name, that you witnessed it, and Terri, if you would do the same.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Martha, I just wanted to ask you a couple of questions, just to make sure that we understand each other clearly.<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Mmm-hmm.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Uh, did anybody in the church tell you that your bank was going to go bankrupt before you took the money out of the bank? (Pause) Would you speak clearly into the tape, so we have it\u2013<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: No.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Uh\u2013 Are you happy in the church, Martha?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Oh, yes. I love it.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Do you wish to stay here for the rest of your life.<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Rest of my life.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: And\u2013 Now the other thing is, is that, this little paper that I had you sign, you understand that the only reason that we\u2019re asking you to sign it is to clarify, to make it clear, what you intended to do last August, when you brought the money to the church. Is that right?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Mmm-hmm. That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: And that you intended to put the money in the church. Right?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: And not a bank. Is that right?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: And you knew that if the money went into the church, it was going to be used for church purposes, and you\u2013 it would\u2013 it would\u2013 would not be in a\u2013 in a\u2013 in a bank account. You understood that?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: I understood that.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: You said uh, Martha, that you were happy in the church. Is that right?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Yes, (unintelligible word) I\u2019m really happy.<\/p>\n

Man 3<\/strong>: Uh, and how about Pastor Jim. How is he\u2013 how has he treated you?<\/p>\n

Wade<\/strong>: Oh, he has treated me nice. I\u2019d be dead (unintelligible word). I\u2019da been dead.<\/p>\n
