{"id":13234,"date":"2013-02-17T21:50:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-17T21:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alternativejonestown.com\/?page_id=13234"},"modified":"2026-04-04T16:40:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T23:40:06","slug":"mooresedited","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=13234","title":{"rendered":"The Temple edit of John &amp; Barbara Moore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the publication of <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=13227\">Notes and Reflections<\/a> by John and Barbara Moore of their trip to Jonestown in May 1978, a second document appeared with a condensed account of the trip. It was printed on the letterhead of the First United Methodist Church in Reno, Nevada, where John was the pastor, and includes a note of introduction about the Moores.<\/p>\n<p>It is likely, however, that the document is not what it purports to be. Instead, it seems that the report was written by a member of Peoples Temple, using the original account as a point of departure, with the complicity \u2013 if not the outright participation \u2013 of one or both of John and Barbara\u2019s daughters, Carolyn Layton and Annie Moore.<\/p>\n<p>There are several reasons for this belief. First, the note of introduction is written in the third person (and, not incidentally, includes a period after the \u201cV\u201d of John\u2019s middle name, which is an error: his middle name is \u201cV\u201d.) Secondly, its style is different from that of either John or Barbara. Finally, it is unabashedly glowing and positive of what the Moores experienced in Jonestown, with language and descriptions which contrasts sharply with the care and balance that the visitors used in crafting their original statement.<\/p>\n<p>The use of the stationary would seem to give authenticity to the statement \u2013 and that was certainly its purpose \u2013 but the Temple had used the church\u2019s letterhead without John\u2019s permission beforehand.
