By the fall of 1978, the Jonestown leadership was feeling a financial pinch: the\u00a0 community was not self-sufficient and \u2013 perhaps unexpectedly so \u2013 seemed to be losing ground. To make matters worse, the community\u2019s focus of attention, and its consequent priorities for its limited economic resources, was on the legal battles it was fighting against Tim Stoen and his clients.<\/p>\n
A short, undated memo written and seconded by Jonestown\u2019s two resident attorneys \u2013 Eugene Chaikin and Harriet Sarah Tropp \u2013\u00a0 captures the dilemma.
