{"id":13818,"date":"2013-02-17T21:50:24","date_gmt":"2013-02-17T21:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alternativejonestown.com\/?page_id=13818"},"modified":"2024-04-24T10:03:32","modified_gmt":"2024-04-24T17:03:32","slug":"freitas","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=13818","title":{"rendered":"Joseph Freitas Letter to Fred Wills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On November 25, 1977 \u2013 one week after a California Superior Court judge in San Francisco issued an <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/StoenCustodyOrder.pdf\">order<\/a> awarding custody of John Victor Stoen to his mother, Grace Stoen \u2013 San Francisco District Attorney Joseph Freitas wrote a letter to Fred Wills, Guyana\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs, to ask for assistance in enforcing the court order.&nbsp; (Wills\u2019 office received the letter in late January 1978, according to a stamp on the document.)<\/p>\n<p>The letter specifies the statutory authority that Freitas had as a representative of the court in writing the letter. However, Freitas implicitly acknowledges that neither he nor the state court has the ability to demand a foreign government to act on its behalf. Rather, he asks Wills \u201crespectfully \u2026 to use whatever influence you have to help us obtain Rev. Jones\u2019 compliance\u201d and expresses gratitude \u201cfor whatever you can do to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not the way the people of Jonestown received the letter, however.
