And you\u2019re a member of this church \u2013 excuse me \u2013 if a child never been here, but if you\u2019re the <i>mother<\/i>, we\u2013 we have a <i>love<\/i> for you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Scattered applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>We feel to <i>shelter<\/i> you. That\u2019s the kind of father that I am. Won\u2019t find a father like that anymore. They just don\u2019t <i>make<\/i> them in these churches. That\u2019s why today on the radio, a minister announced, said all the ministers got to get together, we gotta do somethin\u2019 about Jim Jones. <i>Sure<\/i>. On KGR or something, he got on there, whatever his name was. Aldridge [phonetic]. Who\u2013 Who? Who is Aldridge?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Voices in congregation<\/b>: (Unintelligible about Aldridge)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>What? When a minister has to have a meeting about me and wants others to meet to do something <i>against<\/i> me, then you know who it <i>is<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b><i>I<\/i> never called any meeting to do anything about anybody, because when I know that they\u2019re not of God, I know the <i>Spirit<\/i> can take care of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>So when they\u2019re calling all\u2013 calling this meeting, when they\u2019re calling this kind of a <i>meeting<\/i>, they don\u2019t\u2013 it <i>shows<\/i> they\u2019re not <i>children<\/i> of God, because they wouldn\u2019t <i>do<\/i> that kind of thing to try to hurt anybody. You don\u2019t <i>do<\/i> that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Gamaliel said in the Acts of the apostles, he said, don\u2019t you <i>fight<\/i> these people. Said, don\u2019t <i>touch<\/i> them, the great man of the San Hedron [phonetic], he said lest happily you find yourself fighting <i>God<\/i>. He said if it is not of God, it won\u2019t stand, and if it is of <i>God<\/i>, then you\u2019ll be in trouble, because you\u2019ll find yourself fight\u2013 fighting <i>God<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>When a man gets on a radio station and calls people to <i>meet<\/i> to do something about James Jones\u2013 Jim Jones over the radio, it <i>shows<\/i> \u2013 nobody has to <i>tell<\/i> you what\u2019s going on here \u2013 it shows you that God <i>Almighty<\/i> is in this place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>(Calms, then voice rises) The idea. What kind of a <i>man<\/i> that he is. What kind of a man? The audacity, you see. The enemies of God, beliler, a mast on every hand, that\u2013 that\u2019s why you have to stand together. I welcome, I welcome (unintelligible) office. I will <i>take<\/i> them. Living is harder than dying. I welcome Gethsemanes. I can take a cross any time. But you best not let anything happen to this church or any of its leadership. You best stand together. United we stand, divided we fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Who heard this on the radio? She says she got four thousand dollars. What did you\u2013 what\u2019d he say, exactly, on the radio? Sister, what\u2019d he say? I didn\u2019t discern\u2013 I didn\u2019t discern this other than something about the <i>name,<\/i> and I couldn\u2019t get it clear. Yes, go ahead. Shh!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 1: <\/b>(Unintelligible, then mic comes on) He said tomorrow. (Aside) Was it tomorrow? (back to mic) Tomorrow at eleven that they were having a meeting with the ministers\u2019 union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Yes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 1: <\/b>And the (unintelligible word, sounds like \u201cpublic\u201d) was invited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>For what?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 2: <\/b>I don\u2019t know for what.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 1: <\/b>That\u2019s all I heard him say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Well, there\u2019s someone said\u2013 he said it was going to be a meeting about Jim Jones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 1: <\/b>No, I didn\u2019t hear him say that. I didn\u2019t hear him say that. He heard that this morning. He didn\u2019t (unintelligible) Jim Jones (unintelligible).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>He didn\u2019t mention it this morning?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 1: <\/b>No, he didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Hmm?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 1: <\/b>I\u2013 What I heard him\u2013 from my house to here, in my car\u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>(Stumbles over words) \u2013what this sister\u2019s saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 2:<\/b> He <i>did<\/i> say he had to do something about Jim Jones, (unintelligible word) all the members of the meeting, because they had to have a conference and do something about this Jim Jones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>He said what?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 1: <\/b>He did say that. He did say that he had to do something about this Jim Jones. At least I heard that on the radio this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>(short laugh)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Yes, dear. It\u2019s wonderful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">(Woman talking in background, unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman 2:<\/b> We wants a lot of our people to be there. We want a lot of our people to be there, so we can get protested (unintelligible under Jones)\u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Yes, if you\u2013 I\u2019m not worried, I don\u2019t need to raise my finger against this man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Sustained applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>(Cries out) Hey God. (Pause) (Calms) Somehow we got to\u2013 It\u2019s all right, indeed, if some of you want to go. How very likely they won\u2019t discuss <i>anything<\/i>, if you\u2019re sitting there. Very likely they won\u2019t say a word. But I\u2013 I want to tell you that <i>my<\/i> duty and <i>your<\/i> duty is not to go\u2013 you, uh\u2013 you\u2019ve got\u2013 you must <i>pray<\/i> for those that despitefully use you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>It\u2019s rough. It\u2019s rough when people just trying to cause trouble all the time. Some sister, some brother sending here a note, by a sister Thursday night, who it was\u2013 one of\u2013 another minister, said I\u2019m going to do anything in my power to get that Jim Jones \u2013 in other words <i>threatening<\/i> \u2013 says I\u2019ve lost too many members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Woman in congregation<\/b>: Oh!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Yes, I\u2019ve lost too many members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>They\u2019re all stirred up. <i>I\u2019ll<\/i> tell you what they\u2019re all stirred up about. Because I\u2019ve told about their anniversaries and their pastors\u2019 <i>teas<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>They don\u2019t care\u2013 they wouldn\u2019t\u2013 they wouldn\u2019t care at all. If I was God Almighty. They wouldn\u2019t care. The thing that bothers them is that I come along, and I wear old clothes and I don\u2019t own a car and I don\u2019t have a ring, I don\u2019t have a watch. And I never take an anniversary and I never had a pastor\u2019s birthday. <i>That\u2019s<\/i> what\u2019s bothering <i>them<\/i>. That\u2019s what\u2019s getting them stirred up!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Sustained applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>(Calls out) Because all\u2013 most the good ministers are here today or out in some little old mission somewhere. These big jacklegs that g\u2013 rob the people blind. driving Cadillacs and Lincolns and Rolls Royces, and <i>that\u2019s<\/i> why they don\u2019t want Jim Jones on the <i>scene<\/i>, \u2018cause Jim Jones has come with a <i>plan<\/i> in his hand!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Sustained applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>And he\u2019s shaking creation!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Sustained cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>You don\u2019t have to name it. You don\u2019t have to name it. Its works will speak for itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>(Calls out) You go tell no man anything. You just tell them that there\u2019s <i>somebody<\/i>\u2013 there\u2019s a black-headed <i>preacher<\/i>. I don\u2019t know whether he\u2019s black or Indian. He\u2019s mixed up like every alley dog. Well, I\u2019ll tell you, there\u2019s an old <i>alley<\/i> dog over on Alvarado that\u2019s causing <i>cancers<\/i> to come out, that\u2019s causing the people to walk, that\u2019s causing the <i>blind<\/i> to see, causing the dead to rise!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Sustained applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>I don\u2019t care what you say, you just say any old alley dog. Say he\u2019s just an old black-haired fella mixed up with <i>all<\/i> kinds of races, but it\u2019s <i>amazing<\/i> what he can do. He walked on the water, he\u2019s turned the water into wine. He\u2019s stopped the rain, and he caused the rain to come when they needed rain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>They said it\u2019s amazing, when he comes to town, most every day comes to town, the <i>smog<\/i> clears up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Sustained applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Not one time yet have I been in this city when the eyes burned, not one time that I have been in this city, they didn\u2019t say there was smog is light or no b\u2013 eye-burning today. Or the smog is gone, a strange breeze has blown in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>(Voice drops slightly, then builds) Certainly it\u2019s all right to go at eleven o\u2019clock and sit there lovingly and prayerfully if you <i>choose<\/i>. I\u2019ll leave up that to your <i>own<\/i> intuition. Each of your have to put legs on your prayers, you can\u2019t sit back and just think, well, I\u2019ll just <i>think<\/i> it and let Father do the work. You have to be willing to <i>do<\/i> something. But I want to tell you for\u2013 as for me as a <i>person<\/i>, whatever comes, I\u2019m just expendable. I\u2019m a sacrificial lamb. I\u2019m ready to be sacrificed. Either alive or dead, or imprisoned. In tumults, in riotings, whatever. Whatever man wants to do with me, I\u2019m here to glorify the name of Jesus!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>And if you\u2019re sluggish, if you\u2019re weary and well doing, the gaps of the hedge will drop, the wall of fire will drop, and they\u2019ll take me and do with me what they will, but whatever they do, I will say thank God, for I have come to suffer. I have come to give my life <i>freely<\/i>, that people might be healed, that they might be free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>(Voice drops slightly, then builds) If you stand up with courage and dignity, if you stand on your own back legs and faced all the adverse winds, and say I will not be moved, then nothing will come nigh us. But if you are weak and weary and well doing, they will come and take me and do with me what they will as they have done before. <i>You<\/i> must decide. For I\u2019ve come for many generations down through forty generations. I have come treading the winepresses alone and of the people, there were none to help. I have come dying. I have died a <i>thousand<\/i> deaths, and I am ready to die again. I will do what I <i>will<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>But whether you believe what I am or not, whether you accept what I am or not, I <i>am<\/i> what I am, nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Loud applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Call me what you <i>will<\/i>, call me alley dog or call me alley cat. Call me Jim Jones or call me by my <i>right<\/i> name, it makes no difference. I will still do my work, because they that are against me cannot be as great as that which is within me. Oh, no!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Cheering and applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">(Unintelligible voice aside)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>(Laughs softly) (Voice calms, then builds) Well, they\u2013 let\u2019s say it is true. It\u2019s true that remarks have been made. It\u2019s true. But I say to you that there isn\u2019t no action to the remarks. If you want to be there, and in case somebody wants to make remarks and look at them and with a prayerful attitude to let them know that you know in whom you have believed and you are persuaded that who you think the truth happens (unintelligible, overwhelms mic) that day. (Calms) You want to go in and shake hands and smile with people and <i>love<\/i> them, but don\u2019t go in to proselytize or to stir up or to cause strife or envy. Just be a silent vigil of that which you say I am. (Clears throat)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Scattered applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Don\u2019t talk. Don\u2019t gossip. Don\u2019t bear the tale out. Don\u2019t give any satisfaction to your enemies. But I want to tell you, the <i>key<\/i> rests with you. I said the <i>key<\/i>, my child, rests with you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Man\u2019s voice in crowd:<\/b> Yeah!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>I have come with none other purpose than to do the will of <i>him<\/i> that sent me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Cheering, Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>I have come, dying daily, I have come <i>crucified<\/i> in the flesh, nevertheless I <i>live<\/i>, yes that I, Jim Jones, but <i>Christ<\/i> sent me to be me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>The <i>life<\/i> I live, I live not by the flesh of Jim Jones, but by the <i>will<\/i> of the son of God, (calms) so I can be here and we can build temples and build homes and build great, great ministries and extend our ministry, even to Houston as we did when we healed a man here that was brought in a wheelchair, and now he\u2019s holding two meetings a day, that great Baptist official [Bishop Crane] over five thousand churches. And I healed him <i>instantly<\/i> when I said go tell this minister, go tell that minister, that this <i>day<\/i> you have <i>seen someone<\/i> face-to-face (Pause) and you know what the someone was. And he went and told of this day. I have met him <i>face<\/i>-to-face, and he came <i>out<\/i> of the wheelchair and he\u2019s been <i>healing<\/i> the sick with my pictures and my name and my oil ever since (Pause) in the biggest and the oldest historical Baptist church down there in Texas. And I\u2019m going to go there next week, and you better make your reservations to come to leave with us Sunday evening, as we go down there. Then we go back in Easter. So, if it is the\u2013 if it is indeed that you\u2019re brave, if the comforter has come into your life, that spirit that I represent, the Holy Comforter, which means the spirit of bravery. If I have <i>put<\/i> that spirit in you, if indeed my <i>statutes<\/i> are written on your inward parts and my <i>law<\/i> is in your heart. If you have bravery, then we shall expand and we shall move and we shall build but if you are weak, if you are a vacillating Peter, if you are afraid to be identified with me, if you say I never <i>knew the man<\/i>, if you\u2019re afraid to stand up and be counted, then they\u2019ll <i>take<\/i> me and do with me what they will. But anyway, my glory and my <i>truth<\/i> will go marching on. <i>Nothing<\/i> can stop God!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>I said <i>nothing<\/i> can stop God!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Man\u2019s voice in crowd:<\/b> No! No!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>If you put me in a jail cell, I will cause <i>creation<\/i> to be shaken. If you put me in a cross or put me in an electric chair, I will cause <i>creation<\/i> to be shaken. Whatever you give me, if you mean it for evil, I will take it and I\u2019ll turn it around and ram it up you for good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>You\u2019ve never met a <i>man<\/i> like <i>this<\/i> man before. A man who doth not have any future. A man who doth not have any past. Can\u2019t <i>hurt<\/i> me anymore because I died. I have died, but Christ has resurrected. What have I done to you?\u201d That\u2019s all I want you to not have to worry with. I don\u2019t want you to have that agony. Some of you say, I can\u2019t pay the price of giving up my house or my home or my job. I can\u2019t take the chance of losing what I have. There nothing all the world you can\u2019t afford to pay, like the <i>blood<\/i> of Jesus on your hands. And that\u2019s what I\u2019ve come, to glorify the name of Jesus. I have shown you the <i>blood<\/i> of Jesus that has healed that Baptist minister, the blood flowed from these hands and opened up his eyes, so that he could read scripture and hold meetings again two times a day ever since he left here. It\u2019s the blood of <i>Jesus<\/i> that you\u2019re trampling asunder. It\u2019s the work and life of <i>Jesus<\/i> that you\u2019re taking with wicked hands and crucifying. (Calms) So you that are silent, and you that\u2019re indifferent here and you that\u2019ve come to spy on our liberty, what will you do with Jesus? What will you do with Jesus? That\u2019s the problem. Don\u2019t worry about Jim, don\u2019t worry about Jesus. Don\u2019t worry about him, he\u2019ll take care of himself. But what you\u2019ve <i>got<\/i> to know, what will I feel as a saint, as a child of his, what will I feel if I have not held up his hands? It was <i>lonely<\/i> for Peter. It was so lonely for Judas. Judas took the thirty pieces of <i>silver<\/i>, and he run with them and threw them back. <i>Threw<\/i> them at the p\u2013 the feet of the scribes. And they wouldn\u2019t have them. Said <i>no<\/i>, take your pieces of silver, we don\u2019t <i>want<\/i> your blood money. Judas says, oh, I didn\u2019t know what I did. <i>Please<\/i>, I didn\u2019t know what I did. I did not know what I was doing. I did not realize when I kissed him and gave him the kiss of death. I didn\u2019t know what my conscience was going to feel like. (Pause) I have not preached this ever in my life so it must be someone here needs to listen to this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause, music<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>And so they wouldn\u2019t take his money, and he wouldn\u2019t pick it up, he left it laying there and he run down, and he run <i>down<\/i> to the hill and he threw himself headlong. King James has got it mixed up. He didn\u2019t even bother to hang himself. He threw himself, \u2018cause you can\u2019t hang yourself as King James has it, and then throw\u2013 fall headlong and have your gash\u2013 your bowels gashed out. You don\u2019t hang yourself and then turn upside down and go headward. What he did \u2013 \u2018cause I know \u2013 Judas just went to the edge of a big cliff and <i>dived<\/i> off. He wanted to put his mind out of commission, \u2018cause he couldn\u2019t stand the thought, I have crucified the one that was to come. I have crucified my pastor. I have <i>crucified<\/i> my <i>savior<\/i>. I have given the kiss of death. You say you can\u2019t afford to support this ministry? (Claps hands once) You can\u2019t afford <i>not<\/i> to support this ministry. (Voice climbs) Because <i>one day<\/i>, one day you\u2019ll wake up and you\u2019ll know who was in your midst. When you do wake up, at least say, I served him all the way. You\u2019re going to be the first, you know, fired. We\u2019re the last hired and we\u2019re the first fired. How you going to pay your taxes when it comes? We\u2019ve got the president [Forbes Burnham, prime minister of Guyana] over there loves us so much, we\u2019re the only group that\u2019s been given tax free status. <i>No<\/i> taxes \u2013 even personal taxes \u2013 for <i>ten<\/i> years. This was when her way past her 70\u2013 her three score and ten. But\u2013 But the Sky God said you could live <i>way<\/i> past. But it\u2019s beautiful. She looks like a woman much younger than that. Her age is nobody\u2019s business. Now that\u2019s been a year ago, a year and a half. Not a trace of cancer with all of her stomach (unintelligible) eaten up and her bowels eaten up with cancer, and it\u2019s all gone. What the surgeons\u2013 the surgeons sent her home. Said I\u2019ve got\u2013 You must go home and prepare to die. Sent her home to die. And <i>I<\/i> sent her back to the doctor to live.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Scattered applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>How many will give 10 and then\u2013 (Tape edit) and some will hold back till the sixteenth, and really wished they hadn\u2019t. Thank you. Ten. How many (Unintelligible with tape edit) people give more around certain numbers? It\u2019s a law of life, it\u2019s not foolishness. How many have seen our children\u2019s home? Our acreage, our pears, our grapes, our wonderful uh, farm lands, our animals. How many have seen the convalescent sanitariums? Few of you have seen the new convalescent hospital or sanitarium in Ukiah, I\u2019m\u2013 I\u2019m sure. And very few of you have seen the college dormitories. Well, hopefully next Sunday \u2013 you want to be planning to come up next Sunday \u2013 we may have some news about an Oakland church. But the preacher [Harold Dowler] said, there\u2019s only man on one church that\u2019s worth anything in America. It\u2019s called First Church, the oldest church there in the denomination, in\u2013 in Oakland. <i>Beautiful<\/i> church, sets up on a marvelous hill with a parking lot larger than ours. Fifty-two rooms. Pipe organ worth a hundred thousand dollars, worth a million dollars, and he said, if you know what you\u2019ll do\u2013 ought to do, you\u2019ll let me <i>resign<\/i> and you will integrate with that church and turn your property over, and let me tell you, their board passed on it this week, to turn the church over and today\u2013 and by Wednesday, the final vote\u2013 the absentee ballots will come in, and usually the congregation always goes the way the board has gone. The board voted unanimously to turn the church over to Jim Jones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause and cheers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>It\u2019ll make those in the Bay Area proud, because it\u2019s a marvelous church. The windows are even more valued than these. The windows cost <i>hundreds<\/i> of thousands of dollars and were transported from Italy. So that\u2019ll be good for us to convert that to cash, with the\u2013 if we get it, when we need to travel, won\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Yeah!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Marvelous! Congressman Bond saying that <i>no<\/i> churches have helped. Three black men are in Raleigh, South Carolina [North Carolina] facing a death sentence. Now I want a check to go out here today. You understand what I\u2019m saying. I want a check to leave this room today, so that we can help these people. <i>Three<\/i> of them. The newspaper, even the white newspaper said they weren\u2019t guilty. For two hours. Nobody that\u2019s convicted of rape unless they\u2019re black. There\u2019re sixteen people waiting execution, fifteen of them black. One Indian. That\u2019s always the way it is, honey. These three fine young black men picked up a white woman on the road. She was hitchhiking. They gave her a ride. And she wanted to do things. They did it like any foolish young man will do. We don\u2019t believe in rape, we don\u2019t believe in all kinds of foolishness, but people are going to be people out there in the world. And when they finished, there wasn\u2019t a scratch on her, they took her home. He asked, did you take it home? After they done their thing and they let her out a half block away from her home, but the white neighbor saw her. So she told them \u2013 not\u2013 didn\u2019t scream, didn\u2019t holler \u2013 she told \u2018em later it was rape. These young men are facing the gas chamber. But if they get by with this, it\u2019ll be worse then in California tomorrow. They\u2019ve got the same thing there, rapists can be executed. All over the states, they\u2019ve said they\u2019ve done away with uh, the capital punishment, done away with electric chairs and gas chambers and hangman\u2019s nooses, but they can still hang people on rape, killing a police officer and a whole lot of other things. I think I\u2019m doing something about this, even if our promised land, even if I work with heavy\u2013 Are we going to do something about this, so that we can make a sizeable contribution today? They <i>called<\/i> on us, because not <i>one<\/i> church, not one civil rights group, not <i>one<\/i> would help. Now that\u2019s too bad. Said, I understand the many reports here in Atlanta, in Montgomery area, that <i>you<\/i> and you alone helped political prisoners, as a church. And you know it\u2019s true, these are political prisoners, being held there by the color of their skin. Only those cases are prosecuted for rape or any other crime, whether ignorant, or black, or poor. There were three thousand some rapes charges this year in the Bay region of California, there was three thousand six hundred charges, arrests made for rape. But only 600 of them were prosecuted by the district attorney, but only 200 of them were convicted, and a hundred and ninety of those, hundred eighty seven of those 200 were black. (Pause) See what I\u2019m saying?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Yeah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>They let everybody go through all the time, but a black person, just one woman\u2019s charge, and they\u2019re facing the gas chamber. We just got a stay of execution, I\u2019ve been working on it. You\u2019ll be reading about it in the newspaper. We got a\u2013 a stay of execution, so that they\u2013 (Unintelligible word)\u2013 they would\u2019ve already been dead, they would\u2019ve died on the tenth. My friends, we\u2019ve got to move. So in this room I\u2019m going to say quickly, this is the last there\u2019ll be mention of any money today, is there anyone here that would give us (Tape edit) to be put in that gas chamber? There\u2019s sixteen more, waiting. One of them Indian. Fifteen blacks. That\u2019s who gets to go to gas chambers. You\u2019re supposed to be given equal representation, a jury trial of your peers. If he was black, he should have at <i>least<\/i> seven. At <i>least<\/i> seven or six black people. But <i>whites<\/i> sentenced him in two hours, three men to die. Are you going to do something about this? Or pastors\u2019 wives teas. They\u2019re too busy doing something like that instead of helping the poor. He got <i>life<\/i>, when they promised him one year. How many\u2019ve known someone where DA\u2013 public defenders told to plead for something, and it\u2019ll be easy on you. How many know someone? And it didn\u2019t turn out that way. The average public defender gives <i>five<\/i> minutes to a case. And you say we\u2019ve got a <i>free<\/i> society? You say that every man\u2019s equal before the law? Something that\u2019ll <i>appeal<\/i> and show what we\u2019ve <i>already<\/i> done and make \u2018em feel <i>guilty<\/i>. (Tape edit) Brandy and extra food that\u2019s killing you. Getting so fat you can\u2019t hardly get it in their <i>corset<\/i> anymore or the man\u2019s girdle. Ten. (Tape edit) \u2013has extra weight but she\u2013 she has to work herself hard. Giving you free service, but she wants to do that to be prepared to serve you. We <i>all<\/i> ought to think of that. Shouldn\u2019t we? I\u2019d <i>love<\/i> to eat. But I know if I eat too much, I won\u2019t be serving you like I ought to. I once weighed two hundred and twenty some pounds. And I weigh a hundred and eighty now \u2013 a hundred and eighty three \u2013 and I\u2019m not satisfied. I want to get <i>down<\/i> to a hundred and sixty five. I don\u2019t want to live. I want to live because <i>you<\/i> live here. We\u2019ll seek uh, two hundred dollars and she going to donate that to raise for these sons. Beautiful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Congregation: <\/b>Applause<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Yes. (Clears throat) Thank you. Thank you. Some of you wouldn\u2019t mind so much, who would know the cause of freedom, but how would you mind it for your son? You wouldn\u2019t like it very well. How many\u2019ll give five extra (tape edit) \u2013for the children\u2019s homes and the senior residences? And the college kids that we\u2019re educating. Hundred of them in school. I think that would touch you. But if three men in a gas chamber don\u2019t touch you, you won\u2019t going to be touched. Isn\u2019t that true? Three. I\u2019ve asked (tape edit) \u2013certainly going to be gotten if I have to do it one thing or another. Let me see. (Pause) Jessie Watson, Vernon Brown and Bobby Hines. Terrible, terrible. It\u2019s more than a thousand, we\u2019ll be blessed, but it isn\u2019t, I can tell that. It\u2019s going to be a thousand. I know the money, just as I know your thoughts. I\u2019ve told three people their thoughts today. Why don\u2019t you think that I know your money? I know what you\u2019re holding back, I know what you\u2019re blessed with. (Pause) <i>Two<\/i> dollars\u2013 (tape edit) \u2013to nice young men. They don\u2019t look like rapists. They\u2019re just young men wanting to try to take advantage of somebody\u2019s offering somethin\u2019 free. Because they\u2019ve been held down, naturally when a white woman will offer something free, they\u2019re going to fall prey to it. Your son would too. And Julian Bond\u2019s not one to champion causes, but he said, I can <i>assure<\/i> you, Pastor Jones, that we <i>desperately<\/i> need your support, and we will be saving the lives of <i>three<\/i> innocent men. That\u2019s his exact words. He won\u2019t say a thing like that, unless he knows what he\u2019s talking about. \u2018Cause he\u2019s conservative, politicians can do\u2013 try to stay in office. How many will give one\u2013 (tape edit) We\u2019ve seen blindness cured, we\u2019ve seen crippling, a number of nurses were sent out for people that\u2013 one of the sisters came up and hugged me, that\u2019s not even called out. She was an indirect revelation. But it happens all through the service. Peoples (Calls out) (unintelligible word) or say God, when I think of the goodness of Father?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Voices in congregation: <\/b>No!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Jones: <\/b>Particularly what he does for the oppressed. These healings are marvelous and they\u2019re real. But what he does to set people free from jails and oppression, terrible ghettos, horrible housing, no food. He saved people here that were hungry. Some of the older people we have in our senior homes were <i>hungry<\/i> when they came to us. That\u2019s sad to see some older black sister, or a brother that\u2019s worked uh, all the days of their life, going to bed hungry every night. You say there\u2019s no hunger in America? Walter Cronkite says there\u2019s eight million to ten million youngsters in America that\u2019re going to bed hungry, that are starving, slowly, in <i>America<\/i>. How many will give one dollar? (tape edit) Sixteen, these (unintelligible word) youngsters here were <i>caught<\/i> and apprehended and found and murdered in a few hours. The law also said to me if <i>sixteen<\/i> don\u2019t give generously, sixteen of you will have your own loved ones standing before an assistant public defender. Not <i>the<\/i> defender, the assistant. You heard what I said. How many will give me one\u2013 (tape edit) \u2013so bad, the cars won\u2019t run, I won\u2019t buy anything.
