Marilyn Pursley: <\/b>Thank you very much. Uh\u2014 It\u2019s very hard for me to speak to so many people, that I\u2019m\u2014 I\u2014 I\u2019m so overwhelmed by all the things I\u2019ve seen here. Every place I turn, I see uh, things that indicate how much labor and effort and money have gone into building Jonestown. And it\u2019s just overwhelming<\/i>. Uh\u2014 It\u2019s going to be very hard to leave, but I\u2019m leaving my three brothers here, I\u2019ve got Cynthia [Pursley] down, and I feel as if there\u2019s no place in the world where Cynthia could be happier than\u2014 than here in Jonestown, where she\u2019ll love\u2014 be loved and\u2014 and learn, and be well taken care of. Today she came back, and she went to a class, came back and said, (brightly) “Well, I\u2019m learning Russian.”<\/p>\n

Marilyn Pursley<\/b>: <\/b>(Laughs) And she sa\u2014 said a few words in Russian, and uh, that\u2019s just an example of what\u2019s happening to all<\/i> the children here. Every place I\u2019ve turned, I\u2019ve just seen people learning<\/i> and growing<\/i>. And my own grandson has uh, changed so much and grown so much since they\u2019ve been here that uh, I just\u2014 Words fail me. And I guess everyone who comes here feels that way. It\u2019s just overwhelming. And thank you for having me.<\/p>\n

Marceline:<\/b> Thank you. I think you said it very well, and uh, I think you should know that\u2014 as you well know, we\u2019ve had a struggle the last year and a half, but when we needed marchers, she was there to march. When we needed someone, she was there. And one of the beautiful things that happens out of the kind of thing we\u2019ve been through in the last year and a half, we find out who our friends are and who our comrades are. And it\u2019s deeply appreciated. Thank you so much.<\/p>\n

Male: <\/b>(Reading) To your poor and your workers whom you oppressed, is this why I must die? Because I came mili\u2014 became militant against your corruption? Then I don\u2019t want to hear about law and order, when your laws are in a state of disrepair, and your so-called order is synonymous with maintaining an immoral status quo. I don\u2019t want to hear about violence. It is your system<\/i> that is violent. It is your system<\/i> that allows senior citizens to die<\/i>, freezing in each other\u2019s arms, and your babies to go to bed hungry at night. It is your system<\/i> that takes the dignity<\/i> away from black people, that forces them into prostitution and crime, just so that they can survive. Don\u2019t<\/i> talk to me about violence. It is you that is pointing the gun at me. And I say to you, like all workers of the world must say to the corrupt systems they live under, kiss my ass<\/i>. Now I want to see the faces of those brave men who stand ready to pull the triggers. I want to see<\/i> them. I want to see<\/i>. I want to see\u2014 (tape silence for two seconds) cowards. You stand behind a wall. Capitalist<\/i> cowards<\/i>. Then be done with me. Kill<\/i> me. But watch one thousand rise on my left side, and ten thousand on my right. (Pause) You can kill me, but you can\u2019t kill my song. And it will lead my comrade workers on to organize. I\u2019m ready now. Go ahead and fire. Why don\u2019t you fire?<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>(mike switches on) \u2014dead. For the third time running, someone has tried to poison my food. We have the sediments, and we\u2019re going to study them under the microscope. What kind of beast do we have in our midst?<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>But don\u2019t you worry. If you\u2019re guilty, we\u2019ll find you.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>My feet may not be ready, but what I can put in my hands is.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>You may be seated. (Pause) Fact of the matter, I\u2019d like to be a sampler, \u2018cause I can take the food<\/i> better than you can. I\u2019ve got a resistance that\u2019s not ordinary. It\u2019s a little bit higher<\/i> than ordinary. So (tape edit?) I would like to take a taste of every bit of food that goes through this house. (Pause) You think you\u2019re smart, don\u2019t you. You think you\u2019re dealing with just an ordinary man. Wait\u2019ll I get through with you.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>Can we go on with the program? Whatever we have to take care of in business-wise\u2014 Turn the lights on in the center section now, folks, so I can see the whites of everybody\u2019s eyes. (Murmured aside, unintelligible) First place, I have question if it\u2019s not coming right out of the kitchen, so that narrows my\u2014 narrows my investigation. So we\u2019re going to put surveillance on the\u2014\u00a0on food. I\u2019m sick of this, it\u2019s\u2014 it\u2019s enough trouble trying to stay awake, alert, and uh, on the ball to defend my people, to have somebody give me enough to knock out a horse, goddamn you. You can give me enough to knock out an elephant, and I\u2019ll still be there to beat your ass.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>\u2014the most beautiful society he\u2019d ever seen. But he suggests when we have new guests, that we close the windows of our big uh, our dorms. Who will be responsible for that? I mean responsible. Can you get around quick when you hear they\u2019re coming? Thank you. My Louisiana kid\u2019s always in there. (Pause) Give us a little time, we\u2019ll have enough, we won\u2019t have to use<\/i> those, those can be used for hospitals and other facilities, lots of room we\u2014\u00a0we can use<\/i>, or they can be converted into smaller quarters by\u2014 by walls. There\u2019s a lot of, of reason there\u2014 there\u2019s no waste. I want you to look<\/i> at what we\u2019ve got in mind, by the goddamn treasonous defector back there, and I\u2019m not saying yet<\/i> till I get\u2014 have a choice. That\u2019s cost us another news story in Los Angeles. Everything was dying, till that started. And they\u2019ve got a congressman [Leo Ryan] they want to come in who\u2019s close to the member of the John Birch Society, just to drop on\u2014 drop in, and my opinion is, to tell them to stick it.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>\u2014(unintelligible word) the life cycle, the life cycle of uh, revolutionaries over and over again repeat themselves. I\u2019m not Lenin, I don\u2019t have that great capacity. We weren\u2019t the originators of the hope of the world<\/i>, October 17 Revolution, although I\u2019m sure I would\u2019ve been if I had been there, and uh\u2014 to some, I just don\u2019t dwell on it, because people get carried away with this reincarnation shit, so I\u2019m not going to talk about that anymore. But some of you remember who I said I was\u2014<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>\u2014but\u2014\u00a0before they\u2014\u00a0before they killed Lenin, they shot him with two bullets with cyanide. (Pause) Two bullets with cyanide. And he lived. (Pause) Finally, they got to him, but he lived.<\/p>\n

Male voice: <\/b>That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>For years. Fourteen\u2014\u00a0Four more years, to help build the revolution. He lived. Got it on its feet. That\u2019s why I get disturbed when I hear people talking about [Soviet dictator Josef] Stalin, \u2018cause of whatever the hell excesses he made, as I told the ambassador, said, anything about Russia you disagree with? I said yes. Those films showing Stalin being pulled down, his statutes [statues] being pulled down, his pictures being defec\u2014 defaced, and picking that man up out of the mausoleum, and moving him to a common grave. I said that nobody in the world, nobody in God\u2019s half acre, I told that ambassador, could ever\u2019ve brought the Soviet people together and resisted the fascists as well as they did. Where was the major turning point? At what point did the war turn? It was Stalingrad<\/i>, that\u2019s where it was. The city named after Stalin, that\u2019s where the turning point came.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>I\u2019m not\u2014 And he took it very well. I said, I\u2014 I want to know right now<\/i>, if I have to go over there and voice sentiments against Stalin, I\u2019m not going. \u2018Cause nobody on earth would pick up\u2014 no leader\u2014 there\u2019d one in a million, that would\u2019ve picked up an ordinary carbine, and gone to the front lines with the\u2014 while they were shooting<\/i> at him, by God, and he was firing back. He coulda been killed. He was on the front lines of Moscow. You\u2019re never<\/i> gonna make me dislike that man, no matter how<\/i> many tales you tell me.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>And that\u2019s a mistake. So it\u2019s a\u2014 made all kinds of wonderful, wonderful progressive decisions. They\u2019re on the post side, the positive side, the side of no\u2014 of Africa. They\u2019re liberating our brothers and sisters in Ethiopia. They\u2019re black, just you\u2014 like you and me. They liberated them, and they were being run over by a bunch of imperialist hordes, who raped their women and everything else, until Russia and Cuba came in, and the same goddamn thing was going on in Angola, of rape, murder, mercenary, until the Soviets and the Cubans moved in. And uh, one of the presidents, president of Zambia\u2014 of Mozambique [Samora Machel] said we\u2019re going to call the Soviet Union in, and even, uh, Uganda said this afternoon, they\u2019re having a major war with Kenya, said we\u2019re going to pull the Soviet Union in, because they\u2019re the major heroes of Africa. So for that reason, not because of perfection\u2014 some of you look for perfection. While you\u2019re looking for perfection, why don\u2019t you look at your dumb ass faults?<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>\u2014they, it\u2019s because I have a slight\u2014 a slight sympathy, a slight sympathy for a man who would carry his gun to the front, because I had six days of it. It wasn\u2019t as long as Stalin, but I know what it is to agonize over your people, and to be tortured to death over whether your people are going to be killed or not killed. I have at least\u2014 (Angry) And I know some of you fuckers want to kill me. Goddamn you, but you\u2014 you\u2019re not going to get a chance, \u2018cause I\u2019m gonna tell you, you move near my house, like two\u2014 it happened last night, two of the people next door, in the apartment next door, s\u2014 reported, you move against my house, I am going to tell you, if there\u2019s any rustling in the brush, I\u2019m gonna shoot first and ask questions later.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>There\u2019s some things that the human language can\u2019t bear. It\u2019s better to let the s\u2014\u00a0talk of this\u2014\u00a0of the mind or the spirit or the emotion, talk on. I always like to hear him say, his shouts forward\u2014<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>We are not defeated. We are not going to be defeated. I don\u2019t give a goddamn how many of you want to defeat us, we shall overcome.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>\u2014owl, I\u2019m glad\u2014\u00a0It\u2019s the most beautiful owl, you need to take a look at that owl. I have a very\u2014 I have a strong<\/i> sentimentality, don\u2019t hesitate to criticize it, but anything that comes my way is like cutting my heart out, to have to de\u2014\u00a0to take its life or to move away from it, and leave it behind. Uh\u2014 Is it this much cost, these little animals?<\/p>\n

Male: <\/b>It wasn\u2019t the cost, Dad, that the analyst uh, discussed it tonight. Uh, it is getting a place that is suitable. Uh\u2014 we need to reconstruct\u2014 (tape edit?)<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>\u2014way we can\u2019t hold them where they are until we get something built? You don\u2019t know how to\u2014 You people are very good, and you\u2019re tremendous in your departments, but you\u2019ve forgotten one thing, how much a child loves its pet, and how important it is for a child to have a pet. If a child doesn\u2019t have anything<\/i> to love, any personal thing to love, it\u2019s gonna be difficult\u2014<\/p>\n

Male: <\/b>Yes.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>(Laughs) Thank you, Mike. Good man. You\u2019re a good worker. You can say whatever you want to say. The worst I can ever say, if you have any trouble, let me know, and he said, I\u2019ll take care of it right now.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>I just don\u2019t willy-nilly like to say, we\u2019re going to annihilate anteaters and ducks, possum and monkeys. (Pause)<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>\u2014see the problem is, the proper place to stay. They\u2019re also dealing with the problem of finances. But what\u2014 Can some of you uh, who are good builders fix, can some of you tell me uh, some of you that I\u2019ve seen do things, Ken Norton, Tom Grubbs, and uh\u2014 They got dexterous hands and uh\u2014 Our welder, Jane [Mutschmann], uh, who in the hell else was it so\u2014 that\u2019s so creative to make things around here? Surely to God there\u2019s some way we could make\u2014 It\u2019s a lone anteater. If you put\u2014 If you put that anteater out, it\u2019s going to die. It doesn\u2019t know how<\/i> to fend in the jungle anymore. \u2018Cause it\u2019s so tame<\/i>. It\u2019s so tame<\/i>. It wouldn\u2019t climb\u2014\u00a0It wants to climb up<\/i> on you. It doesn\u2019t want to hurt you. It\u2019s just got such big claws. But if you put that out\u2014 if you put that uh, that uh, anteater out in the jungle, it\u2019s dead<\/i>. (Pause) I mean it. A tiger\u2019ll have it in nothing flat, because it won\u2019t know how to fend for itself. That\u2019s the problem with domesticizing something. And when we domesticize these animals\u2014 we\u2019ll quit it now, we won\u2019t do\u2014 domesticize anymore, but when you domesticize an animal, it cannot function in its natural habitat. (Pause) (Tape edit? Microphone turned back on?) \u2014zoo in Georgetown has got more animals, I imagine, than they can take care of. If you can, call to tell them to ask<\/i> the zoo, but by God, I\u2014 I\u2014 I\u2019m telling you, I\u2019ve got a complex about me, anybody that comes to me, animal, human, I feel a responsibility. And I don\u2019t like to go around killing<\/i> \u2018em, just because we can\u2019t find some way to take care of them. It may come, it may come. I\u2014 I\u2019d give my own body to feed you, if it came to disaster, and you were starving, I\u2019d let \u2018em cook<\/i> me and let you let them eat<\/i> me, but by God, I wish to hell they would try to find some<\/i> way. I don\u2019t see anybody moving. (Slurs over words, unintelligible) group I used to (sighs) talk to that knew how to make<\/i> things. I think it\u2019s a uh, dreadful thing to let that anteater, a rare creature, uh, die without giving him a\u2014 giving him a chance. He\u2019s just a baby<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Male: <\/b>Well, I\u2019m talking about when folks go downriver to\u2014<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>\u2014parrots. I like to see the place with those beautiful parrots. Those are lovely. They add to the setting. And I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll kill us, feeding them. I don\u2019t think the price\u2014 Don\u2019t you love to see those beautiful birds? Toucan? You ever met Lenny? You ever talk to Lenny? (Pause) About two or three o\u2019clock in the morning, you get over there, he\u2019ll be\u2014 he\u2019ll bounce in the window and bounce on the table. One time he bounced on the window, bounced on the table, and took his bill and turned the damned radio off. He was tired of it.<\/p>\n

Crowd: <\/b>Laughs<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>I\u2014 I think\u2014 I think that creatures like that should be uh, should be preserved<\/i>. I don\u2019t think we should look<\/i> for them, I agree with Johnny [probably Johnny Moss Brown, aka Johnny Jones], we shouldn\u2019t, and something\u2014 you know, a little thing. You gotta watch, if it\u2019s very little, and there are all kinds of diseases you can get. Let\u2019s face it. You can get diseases. (Stumbles over words) Who would know? Dr. [Larry] Schacht or Tom Grubbs, how many diseases are contagious, how\u2014 I\u2014\u00a0to man? The only one I ever heard\u2014 knew was A\u2014\u00a0African green fever, from the African green monkey. Does anybody know? (Pause) Any\u2014 Does Dr. Schacht know?<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>Yeah, there\u2019s a parrot<\/i> fever, but you have to get\u2014 you have to get bit<\/i> by the thing, don\u2019t you? (Pause) Well, let\u2019s do some\u2014 let\u2019s do some researching on that, \u2018cause parrot fever\u2019s no fun. (Pause)<\/p>\n

Tell them what the meal\u2014 they had that day. You understand? It was (stumbles over words) uh, cooked wheat, with toast and an egg, and uh, orange juice at noon, with um, chicken and uh, rice and uh, uh, cassava, and greens. You understand what I\u2019m saying? And a piece of pie. That must<\/i> be done Tuesday<\/i> upon arrival of one group, and it must be done on the eighteenth, if we, uh, we don\u2019t uh\u2014 if we don\u2019t, we\u2019re foolish. (Pause) Uh, tell (unintelligible name; “Larry”?) to come here. Uh, things while I remember. And please, listen to him about botulism and so forth. (Pause) We are going to be visited by Dr. (unintelligible name) wants us si\u2014 to sing. He\u2019s coming here Sunday to spend the day, to visit Jonestown, and confer<\/i> with our medical staff of ways to help. He\u2019s a general practitioner, and so a lot of questions should be asked about tropical medicine and surgeon. Also, one of the top, biggest po\u2014 most powerful woman, and a personal\u2014 I suppose the prime minister doesn\u2019t have any more personal a friend, Margaret Ackman, will also<\/i> be coming out Sunday to spend the day here. This is the general secretary for the PNC, and chief whip<\/i>. She\u2019s the top of the PNC. Now, what we gotta do on that day is to know who our prime minister is. I\u2019m telling you, everybody get it under that tent, or I\u2019m going to kick the hell out of somebody, if they get up and say the PPP\u2019s our party. I\u2019m tired of ignorance. We\u2019ve been through this long enough. How many do\u2014 Who\u2019s our party?<\/p>\n

Crowd: <\/b>PNC.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>What does it stand for?<\/p>\n

Crowd: <\/b>Peoples National Congress.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>You better rehearse\u2014 Every supervisor, I\u2019m asking for every home, head to announce this, practice it, our prime minister\u2019s Forbes Burnham, and we don\u2019t like the PPP, because of what?<\/p>\n

Crowd: <\/b>Apanjhat.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>Apanjhat. Which means, “vote your own kind.” We believe in this government, we would die<\/i> for this government, because they gave us a home. Do you understand?<\/p>\n

Crowd: <\/b>Yes.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>Particularly say that to Margaret Ackman. (Pause) (tape edit?) \u2014there\u2019s not so pro-government, so you just tell them, we\u2019re glad to be here. You understand what I say?<\/p>\n

Crowd: <\/b>Yes.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>You got two people\u2014 There\u2019s a lot<\/i> of freedom in this country, they keep talking about not freedom, but this is a doctor running around, making good money, and he\u2019s anti-government. So you don\u2019t\u2014 You know what you say about this. Say, we love the pri\u2014 we have the l\u2014 we love the privilege of living cooperatively. You understand?<\/p>\n

Crowd: <\/b>Yes.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>Please<\/i> know the doctor before\u2014 Know him. He\u2019s East Indian, and Margaret Ackman\u2019s black, isn\u2019t she?<\/p>\n

Crowd: <\/b>Stirs.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>Hah?<\/p>\n

Scattered replies:<\/b> Yes, she\u2019s black.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>She\u2019s black, and she\u2019s a power<\/i>. To show you how powerful she is\u2014 and she\u2019s a fighter. When they needed some money from uh, East Indian business<\/i> people, to help the party \u2014 the party was raising money for black li\u2014 liberation and also their own activities \u2014 she went, by God, and she got some information on one East Indian businessman, and she said, you either give me a check for twe\u2014 ten thousand dollars, or I\u2019m going to turn you in. (Pause) They gave her\u2014\u00a0They gave her the check for ten thousand dollars. (Pause) She\u2019s tough. She\u2019s tougher than nails. Huh?<\/p>\n

Male: <\/b>We have the clinic on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>We have the clinic on Sunday. That\u2019ll be good.<\/p>\n

Male: <\/b>(Voice too soft)<\/p>\n

Jones: <\/b>Well, show her the activities. Show her the activities. Let her watch (unintelligible pronoun) treat the people. It would be a good<\/i> time for the doctor to look. Cer\u2014\u00a0It\u2019s a ideal time for them to come, the ideal time. (Pause) Um, then\u2014 okay. (Voice trails off as moves away from mike, then returns) Anybody have any\u2014\u00a0any problem or anything that needs to be mentioned from the floor.<\/p>\n
