Much of the conversation is strained, with mirthless laughter, forced lightness and carefully-couched words, but there are moments of heartfelt expressions of loss and grief, and – although only brief – a closing of genuine warmth.

Mike Rozynko, his brother Chris, and their mother Annie have left the Rozynko household to join Peoples Temple. Left behind are the father, whose first name is unknown, and a sister, who later became involved with the Concerned Relatives organization and who – under her married name of Sandy Mils – signed an Accusation against Jim Jones in April 1978.

In the conversation, Mike brings his father and sister up to date with brief descriptions of what his family is doing. He is working in a photography studio and print shop, instead of going to medical school, as his family hoped he would. Chris is working as an electrician, although he had completed four years of college and had been on track to become a lawyer. The subject of their mother doesn’t come up until late in the conversation, when Mike tells Sandy that Annie works as a nurse in a local hospital.

The conversation falters at one point, when Dr. Rozynko says he didn’t know that his son Chris was married. He quickly clarifies that to say, he was under the impression that the union between Chris and Diane Louie Rozynko was a “political marriage.” Mike indignantly assures his father that the two love each other.

The conversation ends on an upbeat note, though, as Mike tells his father, “I wanted to let you know that I’m really happy.” Almost as a postscript, he says, “I love you.” Taken aback, his father replies, “Okay. Hey, that’s great. I love you too, hon.”

There is no indication why this tape was among the 53 that the FBI initially withheld from disclosure.

FBI Summary:

Date of transcription: 3/8/79

In connection with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s investigation into the assassination of U.S. Congressman LEO J. RYAN at Port Kaituma, Guyana, South America, on November 18, 1978, a tape recording was obtained. This tape recording was located in Jonestown, Guyana, South America, and was turned over to U.S. Officials in Guyana and subsequently transported to the United States.

On March 7, 1979, Special Agent (name deleted) reviewed the tape numbered 1B62-29. This tape was found to contain the following:

MIKE ROZINKO (phonetic) [ROZYNKO] making call to his father.

This tape was reviewed and nothing was contained thereon which was considered to be of evidentiary nature or beneficial to the investigation of Congressman RYAN.

Differences with FBI Summary:

The summary is accurate and meets the FBI’s purposes.

Tape originally posted April 2002

Summary prepared by Fielding M.
