Jessie Beagle:<\/strong> I\u2019m uh\u2013 Well, I go by many names, sometimes referred to Dorothy, Jessie Beagle, but father of my beautiful son who died in Jonestown, Joseph Leo Helle, or we called him Joel, I\u2019m not sure what he was called. Sometimes\u2013 Once he adopted Mrs.\u2013 Mr. Beam, and he was Joel Beam. But anyway, I want to read\u2013 I am a poet among other writings and compositions. \u201cGuyana, the Enchanted Jungle\u201d is the title of this. And it was after seeing a famous sculptor\u2019s Christ. De Staebler is the sculptor\u2019s name\u2013 Can you hear me? Can you hear me?<\/p>\n

Crowd:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n

Jessie Beagle:<\/strong> De Staebler had this sculpture in a church\u2013 the uh, student, St. John\u2019s Church near Dwight Way in Berkeley. And I\u2019m not religious, I went with a friend of mine, who was very glad to sit there, I think it was two years after 1978, and I certainly had one thought in my mind. (Pause) This is called \u201cGuyana, the Enchanted Jungle.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Staebler \u2013 that is the name of the sculptor \u2013 De Staebler\u2019s Christ I looked upon,
\nNot\u2013 not to pray, but in memory of my son, Joel.
\nI\u2019m not seeing it right.
\nI looked upon,
\nNot to pray, but in memory of my son, Joel
\nWho with 900 friends and more
\nDied in a faraway land
\nJonestown, Guyana
\nJonestown massacre
\nJonestown, the Promised Land
\nAnd looking on this maverick Christ
\nWho wore no crown of thorns
\nWhose flesh was yellow
\nI heard again the words that Ishmael, my friend
\nSpoke on that November day.
\nI had a vision he was a great artist and a religious man
\nI had a vision
\nI saw your son Joel lifted gently upward
\nBy two beautiful white doves<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Distabler\u2019s Christ
\nControversial, like the master
\nNot accepted, the Catholic Church said
\nToo unique
\nA priest whispering in my ear as he left amused, smiling
\nDid you know quite\u2013 I just can\u2019t see the words\u2013 Okay
\nLeaving, the priest said to me, did you know\u2013 he said smiling amused
\nThe artist created Jesus in the way that he was outlawed
\nAt first not permitted in any church
\nFor he was created, a sort of yellowish color
\nAnd no crown of thorns
\nAs shown at the point of ascension<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
