I love this poem she wrote in the Creative Writing class not long before she left for Guyana with many other Opportunity II students.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>How do you get<br \/>\nFrom the ghetto to the sparrow<br \/>\nHow in the corner of a ghetto<br \/>\nA sparrow grows lips,<br \/>\nAnd remembers how to sing<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This one by Joyce is modeled after a poem by Joyce Carol Thomas. Both poems were published in the Opportunity poetry anthology, &#8220;In Small Dreams,&#8221; on file at the California Historical Society.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Paint me with my head up looking proud<br \/>\nPaint me with a big happy smile on my face.<br \/>\nPaint me with beautiful colored beads,<br \/>\nWith my hair corn-rolled in an African style.<br \/>\nPaint me with the animals of the jungle,<br \/>\nLike a colorful bird and a brown soft<br \/>\nMonkey jumping tree to tree.<br \/>\nPaint me with all the nationalities of people.<br \/>\nPaint me with a gorgeous colored dress&#8230;<br \/>\nPaint me beautiful.<br \/>\nPAINT ME.
