She told me arrangements for the reunion were all made.\u00a0 Dor [sister] coming Friday and will visit Joyce for weekend.\u00a0 Mabs [sister] coming for two weeks.\u00a0 Eddie will pick up Dor and come to the airport for me on Monday morning so I won\u2019t have to wait.<\/p>\n<p>Beulah woke at 9.30.<\/p>\n<p>I gave her for breakfast: grape juice, steak, egg, toast, jam.<\/p>\n<p>I washed dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Dressed.<\/p>\n<p>Beulah told me Willie Malone was a changed young man.\u00a0 He is going to summer school, getting good grade, not causing any trouble.<\/p>\n<p>We walked up to Christians and Rob brought us to church at 12.00, the time for service this morning.<\/p>\n<p>We were in service about 12.30.\u00a0 Helen Love had saved a seat for me.<\/p>\n<p>Announcements had been made.<\/p>\n<p>Norman took the offering.<\/p>\n<p>Jim on podium at 12.00.<\/p>\n<p>Children, dozens of then, sang \u201cI Thank You, Jim\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apostolic Singers did a number.<\/p>\n<p>Choir.<\/p>\n<p>Jim: Turn in professions, skills.\u00a0 Government of Guyana making positions available.\u00a0 Dr. Carlton Goodlett certain that no justice in America.\u00a0 Jim said he talked with Goodlett about non-black socialist nations staying in Olympics.\u00a0\u00a0 He said Cuba was requested by black nations to stay in and make fools of capitalist nations.\u00a0 He said health and muscular [?] development of socialist nations showed.\u00a0 Believes nuclear war will destroy county.\u00a0 Ruling class waiting to rush in because they would not face public censure.\u00a0 Goodlett wants to go with us.\u00a0 He\u2019s afraid white world would exterminate blacks.\u00a0\u00a0 There is no black America.\u00a0 You have no real roots here, don\u2019t believe and never will believe. You needed some teaching.\u00a0 This stuff getting back to you.<\/p>\n<p>Jim outlined some conditions here: earthquakes, can\u2019t take money out, drought, viruses, no vaccine going to be available,\u00a0 when 18% unemployed, what black people going to do then, black leaders returning to Jesus.\u00a0 Few firebrands among Muslims keeping alliance with us, not their leaders.\u00a0 But he\u2019s trying to get land in the p.l.<\/p>\n<p>He went over subject of terms such as right, fresh [??], advice on losing inhibitions.\u00a0 He went over discrepancies in Bible.\u00a0 For benefit of guests.\u00a0 Don\u2019t want anyone to die.\u00a0 It costs me when you die here.\u00a0 Go home and die on your own time.<\/p>\n<p>I ain\u2019t taking no religion kooks over there. Colton admitted responsibility, said he left it clean.\u00a0 He was to work all night.<\/p>\n<p>John Gardner stole sodas from Temple. 2 nights work.<\/p>\n<p>Ronald Campbell hit two smaller children.\u00a0 He got 10 whacks and has to work tonight.\u00a0 Jim had girl he had bit bite him, hit him with a paddle.\u00a0 Socko [Rochelle Kemp] called for to hit him until he cried.<\/p>\n<p>[Name withheld] really took punishment from Danny Curtain [Curtin].\u00a0 [Name withheld] gave Archie trouble all last week.\u00a0 [Name withheld] protected his face with his gloves.\u00a0 Mark Cordell took over for last 30 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>After a brief meditation period, the meeting was dismissed at about 11.45.<\/p>\n<p>I went home with Christians.<\/p>\n<p>Read newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Went to be at 1.30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Monday<\/strong><br \/>\nSusan Wintersteen from the computer center conferred with Dor for several ours this morning, explaining billing methods.<\/p>\n<p>Phil Becnel wanted further changes in his Consumers Power contract and I started to make them, was about half way through when Ray Hines requested someone to take dictation.\u00a0 He gave me letters and a memo on legal matters involving former employees for about half an hour, while Marquita finished the contract changes under Dor\u2019s instruction.<\/p>\n<p>I ate my lunch outside on the PG&amp;E steps. \u00a0Even at noon the sky was overcast today but the sun came out a little later.<\/p>\n<p>I worked on Harris\u2019 work all afternoon.\u00a0 The items were short but enclosures and extra copies were required.\u00a0 I xeroxed most of the extra copies.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita had little to do all afternoon and was very bored.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t get away until late, as I had to prepare Harris\u2019 materials for mailing and my bus was slow in coming.<\/p>\n<p>When I got home I exercised.<\/p>\n<p>Prepared and ate dinner and washed dishes and I had a rather simple meal but I had some watermelon and cooked mung beans for lunches, which made me late.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t start work on my journal until 9.45.\u00a0 I typed until 11.15 but did my 2 pages.\u00a0 I am ready to make corrections on the 16 to 30 September entries.<\/p>\n<p>Read newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Went to bed at 1.00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Tuesday<\/strong><br \/>\nAside from one memo from Maggie, which I put on the ATS MagCard and ran off on one of the outside MagCard machines.\u00a0 Marquita was using mine.\u00a0 I had no other work all day.<\/p>\n<p>I worked on journal entries.\u00a0 Later on I continued typing excerpts from the CIA book.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita: after she finished work on the MagCard, was put on the ATS by Dor, who instructed her in original entry.<\/p>\n<p>At lunchtime Marquita and I ate our lunches in the assembly room where we looked at the film in the employees\u2019 film series, a film on travel around South Africa was to be shown but it hadn\u2019t arrived so we saw one concerning a Japanese businessman who established _______ research and cultural institute.<\/p>\n<p>A little discussion of politics led to the information that Marquita is a Reagan republican.\u00a0 She said her mother was a Democrat but she had always had a sympathy with Republican policies.\u00a0 Dor was present, said she was a Republican too.\u00a0 She made a reference to my being insulted by being called a liberal though I don\u2019t remember my saying so.\u00a0 She probably thinks I am a radical Democrat.\u00a0 Dor has ceased talking about politics with me.<\/p>\n<p>I helped Marquita make corrections in her document, delete and store it and was a little later in leaving the office. \u00a0However I caught a bus right away and got home earlier than I have recently.<\/p>\n<p>I exercised.<\/p>\n<p>I made curry with the steak which was left from Sunday, ate and washed dishes.<\/p>\n<p>I was very tired and decided to proofread my journal section of 16th to 30 September, then press some of the clothes Claire gave me, take a bath and go to bed.<\/p>\n<p>However, Dick Tropp phoned, wanted to bring around a letter for me to sign.\u00a0 This was a long letter, mostly organized by Jim.\u00a0 It was to the editor of a John Birch publication which had picked up charges against the Temple from a number of sources. Jim wanted me to sign it as a member of the church.\u00a0 Dick and I discussed some of my reading on and experience in the CIA.<\/p>\n<p>When we left, I finished my proofing, took a bath and pressed enough clothes for a week or so.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t get to bed until 1.00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Wednesday<\/strong><br \/>\nI had two typing jobs with revisions which kept me more or less busy all day.\u00a0 The first was a memo for Marquita which I put on MagCard. It was on the dissolution of a contract in Argentina.\u00a0 Jim Hartt, a new attorney, brought in a disc which required a new type of transcriber.\u00a0 Dor had to locate one and read the instruction book to learn how to operate it.\u00a0 She showed me.\u00a0 It gave a very clear rendition.\u00a0 The recording was on a contract dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita was on the ATS computer, correcting the job she did yesterday and Dor was working on a Schuman contract on the other computer.<\/p>\n<p>The system went down.\u00a0 Dor, Marquita, and I had a long conversation.\u00a0 It started with a discussion of religion.\u00a0 Marquita believes in God but experiments with divine cults.\u00a0 Such subjects as evolution in which Dor does not believe and the literal interpretation of the Bible, in which she does believe came up.\u00a0 Marquita and I mentioned some inconsistencies, but she was impervious.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita asked for a change in her lunch time today as she wanted to have lunch with another girl.\u00a0 I changed with her and volunteered to transcribe Hartt\u2019s disc, for which he was in a hurry.\u00a0 Later Marquita stated she wished she could have the early lunch hour.\u00a0 She is sociable and wants to be with other people.\u00a0 I\u2019ll try to work out some compromise with her.<\/p>\n<p>When I did go to lunch, the weather was very pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita expressed her dislike for filling in the slips we complete on jobs we do.\u00a0 She resented being timed on her work.\u00a0 Dor explained the purpose and went with on with Bechtel\u2019s personnel policies.\u00a0 When Marquita inquired about raises, she said we get merit increases only.\u00a0 Bechtel does not believe in cost of living raises.<\/p>\n<p>When Dor was speaking of performance standards, she referred to Kate Walker but not by name, who she said wrote the book on secretarial procedures and office time and\u00a0 was very put out when with a new boss she had to rewrite how to do her work. Dor doesn\u2019t like Kate.<\/p>\n<p>I went out on time.\u00a0 Got home at 5.30.<\/p>\n<p>Slept for an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Prepared a quick dinner and ate.<\/p>\n<p>Dressed for the service.<\/p>\n<p>Christians phoned about 7.50.\u00a0 We were in church at 8.05.<\/p>\n<p>Rob handled the rides.<\/p>\n<p>Wesley made the announcements.<\/p>\n<p>The choir sang,<\/p>\n<p>During testimonials, Tyrone Duncan told how, when his case was heard in court, the judge threw it out, bearing out Jim\u2019s prophecy that he would not go to jail. Yolanda [Yulanda] Crawford, with her baby, was in a crash.\u00a0 The car was completely demolished, but she and the baby came through without injury.<\/p>\n<p>Jim was on the podium at 9.15.<\/p>\n<p>Jim pushed the sale of the Berkeley Barb.\u00a0 The Temple gets a percentage of the sales we make.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s socialist, but not as socialist as we are.\u201d\u00a0 Of the Temple members Jim said, \u201cPeople tell me you won\u2019t buy it or won\u2019t sell it.\u00a0 You\u2019re offended by something about sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of mistakes which are made in hospitals, Jim said a top Republican, was given the wrong kind of blood and died.<\/p>\n<p>The offering was taken and I was assigned to the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Jim said: Have nothing to do with Grace Love Berry nor Valor St John.\u00a0 They associate with the worst racists.\u00a0 Mrs. LeTourneau is almost in that category.\u00a0 Nobody is to write to her without Jim\u2019s permission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Twelve Chairs,\u201d a comedy taking place in Russia, directed by Mel Brooks, was shown.<\/p>\n<p>Jim read commendations.<\/p>\n<p>He took another offering.<\/p>\n<p>Several people were brought on the floor.\u00a0 Keith Wright, backed up [Name withheld] when he was discourteous to a black hostess.\u00a0 Philip Lacy and [Name withheld] gave trouble in the swimming party.\u00a0 Jim gave [Name withheld] 4 nights work with 2 hours sleep.\u00a0 This is his last chance.\u00a0 Hugh Doswell and Ricardo Arterberry were reported for misbehavior.\u00a0 Jim mentioned that Ricardo comes from a battered child syndrome.\u00a0 He and Hugh were assigned night work.<\/p>\n<p>(No further notes were taken for this day) [Note from Edith]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>5 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Thursday<\/strong><br \/>\nMarquita was very moody today.\u00a0 Dor asked her if she didn\u2019t feel well.\u00a0 I knew she was probably depressed by the numerous regulations of which Dor constantly reminds her but Marquita merely said she had a lot of problems.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita worked outside our office on the MagCard.<\/p>\n<p>Dor put me on the computer to work on a report for Steve Butler on all the litigation with which Bechtel is involved.\u00a0 We had done a similar report for Insurance but what is wanted now is one with annotations which can be dropped if desired.\u00a0 A special code is used for this.\u00a0 Although Dor had set the job up with columns, it was still nerve-wracking work.<\/p>\n<p>Went to the bank and deposited my check and got cash.<\/p>\n<p>I worked on the litigation report 5 \u00bd hours, stayed late to finish.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t get out until 5 minutes after 5.00, but I caught a bus right away.<\/p>\n<p>Was home before 6.00.<\/p>\n<p>Exercised.<\/p>\n<p>Took my washing to the laundromat.\u00a0 I did underwear only.<\/p>\n<p>Did personal and household chores and washed my hair.<\/p>\n<p>Had dinner and washed dishes.<\/p>\n<p>I examined the three zippers which were not working on three of the dresses given to me by Claire.\u00a0 Got one of them to work.\u00a0 The other two will have to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>I ate some watermelon and read newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Went to bed at 1.30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Friday<\/strong><br \/>\nSlept until 6.30 this morning and didn\u2019t have any breakfast except a piece of cantaloupe.\u00a0 Bought a doughnut which I ate at the office.<\/p>\n<p>Got my time card in.<\/p>\n<p>Coming in this morning, I made a reference about Dor to Marquita who responded she had had about enough of her domination.\u00a0 \u201cShe nags and I won\u2019t submit to it.\u201d\u00a0 She said she was thinking of quitting.\u00a0 I took a few minutes to tell Betty Vasil about Marquita\u2019s discontent.\u00a0 She was non-committal, said my report helped her know how to handle the matter \u201cwhen she comes to me.\u201d\u00a0 I felt she would back up Dor.<\/p>\n<p>I was to start making corrections on the litigation report this morning but the system went down.<\/p>\n<p>At 11.00 there was a demonstration of the MagCard II.\u00a0 This typewriter has a memory. One can retrieve material, adding or deleting with ease and \/or record on a card.\u00a0 When the lease is up on the machines we have now, they are to be replaced by this machine.\u00a0 At present we have one.\u00a0 Dor said she wanted Marquita and me to take the course on its operation.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita wanted to go to lunch with one of the girls and traded lunch hours with me.\u00a0 I got on the computer and started revision of the litigation report.\u00a0 Dor told me not to trade lunch hours any more with Marquita.\u00a0 She said she intended to be very firm with her.\u00a0 She needed discipline. I told her of some of my teaching experience when I have to make a choice between enforcing rules and allowing for the individuality of the student.\u00a0 She said she benefited from my opinion but she thought the situation was entirely different.\u00a0 It was up to Marquita to adapt to the company\u2019s regulations.\u00a0 If she didn\u2019t want to another person to do the job could be recruited.<\/p>\n<p>I finished the revisions of the litigation report.<\/p>\n<p>I ate at my desk.\u00a0 When Marquita returned I took the bus to the bank, where I had left my check book and check register.<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, Dor informed Marquita to make corrections on the ATS computer.\u00a0 She had done another part of the litigation report.<\/p>\n<p>I was free all afternoon.\u00a0 I did yesterday\u2019s journal entry.\u00a0 I had a $5.09 discrepancy in my bank balance and I checked over former bank statements but did not succeed in finding it.<\/p>\n<p>Left work on time.\u00a0 Got home at 5.00.<\/p>\n<p>Packed for the LA trip.<\/p>\n<p>Prepared and ate a quick meal, washed dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Dressed.<\/p>\n<p>Rob called at 7.45.<\/p>\n<p>In the service there were the usual preliminaries.<\/p>\n<p>Jim on podium about 9.10.<\/p>\n<p>Told of indictment of black law enforcement officer Mitchell Ware [Chicago Police Dept, helped found NOBLE] of Justice Department for wire tapping.\u00a0 Shows it doesn\u2019t pay to play their game, in the end you get it.\u00a0 He\u2019s black without an organization.\u00a0 Carter\u2019s wife called Jim talked for 20 minutes.\u00a0 Presidential candidate recognized power, but some in here don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Jim just came from meeting with Chilean Ambassador.\u00a0 He told of last days of Chilean government.\u00a0 His own soldiers tortured him for 11 hours.\u00a0 Jim saw _____ overthrown in Brazil overnight.\u00a0 Thousands of people disappeared with in a matter of days.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to ______\u00a0 ______ ____ to point out necessity of attending regularly or \u201cwe can\u2019t protect you when you need it.\u201d You half-hearted assholes better hope that I get out of here.\u00a0 Jim tired of disloyal people taking advantage of us,\u00a0 One went to be an actor in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Not impressed with all those who call us.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Goodlett.\u00a0 The Zionists after him. 1976 \u2013 Monday<\/strong><br \/>\nI slept until 9.00.\u00a0 The room I was in was so dark I couldn\u2019t see anything.\u00a0 Dor and Eddie were already up.<\/p>\n<p>I had some cantaloupe and Sanka.<\/p>\n<p>We spent most of the morning talking.\u00a0 Dor told us of Paul\u2019s wedding.\u00a0 The bride was Polly Williams.\u00a0 Dor had some snapshots.\u00a0 It had been a simple wedding conducted by a Unitarian minister in the garden of the parents\u2019 house in New Jersey.\u00a0 Polly\u2019s father is well-to-do.\u00a0 Paul has his own business designing buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Dor\u2019s chief topic was her affiliation with Madalyn Murray O\u2019Hair\u2019s atheistic group.\u00a0 She still dislikes the Temple\u2019s identity as a church, though she is not bitter about the incident in Chicago summer before last.\u00a0 She fears the object of Jim\u2019s \u201coccult\u201d abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Both Dor and Eddie warned me to avoid discussion of Jim and the Temple with Mabs.\u00a0 They are concerned about her mental condition.\u00a0 They think she is drinking too much, believe she has too few interests.\u00a0 They think she should get rid of her house and do not understand her reason for keeping it.\u00a0 He financial situation is not good, but not desperate.\u00a0 I promised to be careful in discussion with Mabs.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie has rented the downstairs portion of her house, bedroom and kitchen to a new teacher at her school, a young woman.\u00a0 The arrangement will give Edna [Eddie] more security.<\/p>\n<p>The three of us went for a short walk with Eddie\u2019s three dogs.\u00a0 The weather was ideal.<\/p>\n<p>We had a light lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie wants to retire in perhaps another year.\u00a0 She will get a pension from her school administration.<\/p>\n<p>We drove to Denver, stopping at a shopping center on Wadsworth to make a few purchases.\u00a0 I got some zippers for my 2 dresses with Eddie\u2019s advice.\u00a0 Denver was very hot.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie drove through Barnum where we had lived as children and we looked at familiar sights.\u00a0 She and Dor remembered them better than I did.<\/p>\n<p>We had dinner at Stouffer\u2019s Restaurant on Colorado Boulevard near the [old] airport.\u00a0 We had salmon.\u00a0 We thought too much attention had been given to surface embellishments; the food was not extraordinary.\u00a0 Prices were high.\u00a0 We paid $8.50 for the entree alone.,\u00a0 Dor paid for dinner.<\/p>\n<p>At 8.00 we picked up Mabs at the airport.\u00a0 We found her right away although we had not been certain of the airline nor flight number.<\/p>\n<p>Mabs was in a good mood though her complexion seems muddy and she has gained weight.\u00a0 She was happy because Miranda had just taken a job in Washington with some experimental agricultural project of the government, starting in October,\u00a0 The climate in Montreal is hard on her.\u00a0 Tagore is five.\u00a0 He suffers from allergies and has to have a restrictive diet.\u00a0 She says he has a hot temper.\u00a0 He looks like Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>Mabs is still smoking heavily.<\/p>\n<p>We spent some time in getting out of town as Eddie took the wrong road.<\/p>\n<p>We went to bed at 11.00.\u00a0 Mabs slept in the same room as I.<\/p>\n<p>I slept soundly the first part of the night, woke at 4.00 and couldn\u2019t get back to sleep.\u00a0 Mabs slept rather restlessly.<\/p>\n<p>I got up at 5.30, made some Sanka, thought I would make journal entries.\u00a0 But Mabs joined me and we sat talking until Eddie and Dor got up.<\/p>\n<p>We had toast and eggs for breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>When we had dressed we went in the car with Eddie driving us to see several of her friends in the locality, to her school to meet her principal, whom she likes very much, to the vet with one of the dogs who was limping on one foot.\u00a0 We had hamburgers for lunch.\u00a0 Mabs and I shopped for food for tonight while Dor and Eddie went to the beauty salon and had their hair done.<\/p>\n<p>From what conversations I have had with Mabs, she is not as opposed as Dor to believe in some form of spiritual power, but she does not think highly of Jim Jones\u2019 extra sensory perceptions.\u00a0 However, she is very concerned about social issues and agrees with me about the harmfulness of the present economic system.<\/p>\n<p>On our return we visited another of Eddie\u2019s friends.\u00a0 I had 2 glasses of Scotch and was very tired.<\/p>\n<p>I slept for an hour and a half.<\/p>\n<p>Took a shower while Mabs told the others of some of her relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie borrowed a projector and showed the films I had given Dor, of her, Paul, Mabs, Edna, Miranda, Matthew, Mother and the ranch.<\/p>\n<p>We had dinner which Edna prepared: t-bone steak, baked potato, mushrooms, tomatoes.\u00a0 I had paid for the food.<\/p>\n<p>Mabs told of the trial and sentencing of the man who attempted to rape and murder her.\u00a0 He \u201ccopped a plea\u201d was sentenced to seven years of which he served two.\u00a0 She does not think he was rehabilitated.<\/p>\n<p>Mabs told of some of her experiences doing home teaching.<\/p>\n<p>We looked at the films again.<\/p>\n<p>The others went to bed.\u00a0 I made journal entries.\u00a0 I then read a few items Dor and Mabs had saved for me including an article about folklore written by Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>I went to bed at 1.30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>18 August &#8211; She drove up directly.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped in Idaho Springs.\u00a0 Mabs and I had a hamburger and\u00a0 root beer.<\/p>\n<p>Just out of Idaho Springs, rain began to fall heavily and we pulled to the side of the road as Edna could not see the road very well.<\/p>\n<p>A tunnel has been dug under Loveland Pass because of the numerous skiers who go across the Divide on weekend.\u00a0 It saves a good deal of time, but one misses some of the scenery.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived in Dillon about 3.30.\u00a0 They had expected us much sooner and were worried.\u00a0 Ben had taken Laura sightseeing.\u00a0 With Josie driving, we all followed them.\u00a0 We first went to see the site of \u201cthe ranch\u201d which my grandfather and then my Uncle Earl owned and where we had spent some of our summers as children.\u00a0 Part of the land is flooded.\u00a0 The ranch house burned down several years ago.\u00a0 The old barn and tool house are still standing and are still in use.\u00a0 Condominiums and other tourist housing have been built in other places.\u00a0 The whole area has had a tremendous growth in population. The lake created by the dam built by the Denver water district is used for recreational purposes and the water goes to Denver.<\/p>\n<p>We then went to Keystone to see more condominiums and a fancy hotel built to accommodate skiers and summer tourists.\u00a0 We had met Ben and Laura on the way.<\/p>\n<p>Ben is now 67 but seems to be enjoying life, though her had a stroke 2 years ago.\u00a0 He is retired from the Forest Service.\u00a0 Florence had a gall bladder attack last year.\u00a0 Our cousin, Laura, is a home economics teacher, is married to Dolph Chaney, who \u2026 [Edith refers to a continuation not found] \u2026 they have six children.<\/p>\n<p>Josie spends the summers in Dillon and the winters in Mesa, Arizona.\u00a0 She seems the same as ever, very mild-tempered and agreeable.\u00a0 Florence also is much the same, very critical, especially of people\u2019s housekeeping.<\/p>\n<p>For dinner we had streaks, an eggplant dish, green beans and cake.\u00a0 We discussed politics and gave and received information on all the children and other relatives.\u00a0 Dor was quite volatile in her beliefs.\u00a0 News of Paul, Miranda and Matthew was given.<\/p>\n<p>Ben and Florence\u2019s daughter Robinette is married and they have one child by her husband X.\u00a0 Their son Don was teaching in Hayward but he didn\u2019t like the conditions and ___ ___ California.\u00a0 _____<\/p>\n<p>Ben is concerned about environmental issues but is conservative on the subject of the economy in government, prejudiced against welfare recipients, racial relations.\u00a0 Florence was even more narrow-minded on the racial question.<\/p>\n<p>One of Laura\u2019s daughters is in Australia as an exchange teacher.\u00a0 The youngest is going to school there.\u00a0 One daughter has an operatic quality voice and is a radio announcer.\u00a0 One married a Mexican.\u00a0 Laura was quite broad-minded on this matter.<\/p>\n<p>Larry, Josie\u2019s oldest son, a veterinarian is teaching veterinary medicine at the university in Stillwater, Oklahoma.\u00a0 Alan is a veterinarian in Aurora, Colorado and Robert is working on water research in Tempe, Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>We watched part of the Republican National Convention on TV.\u00a0 Josie has a big color set.\u00a0 We did not wait for the vote but it seemed obvious Ford would be nominated.\u00a0 Ben is a supporter of Reagan.<\/p>\n<p>We went to bed about 11.00. We four slept downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>19 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Thursday<\/strong><br \/>\nWe were up at 8.00.<\/p>\n<p>For breakfast we had pancakes and syrup and black currant jam.<\/p>\n<p>With Ben and Laura we started on a walk to Dillon Lake.\u00a0\u00a0 We met on the way an elderly woman, an old-timer, who is in charge of the Summit Historical Museum, which has been gathering mementos from the Dillon area.\u00a0 She showed us through the museum.\u00a0 I bought a couple of post cards to send to Lor and Dor and Marquita at the office.\u00a0 We then continued our walk to the lake, looking at the condominiums there.<\/p>\n<p>For lunch we had hamburgers.<\/p>\n<p>Laura left for Steamboat Springs to see Lesley Yount, daughter of my mother\u2019s Aunt Ruby.<\/p>\n<p>Josie has a beautiful rock garden.\u00a0 Mabs and Edna took some plants from it.\u00a0 We all had our pictures taken in front of it.<\/p>\n<p>We left for Denver about 2.00, driving over Hoosier Pass and through ____.\u00a0 I drove until we turned up her yard.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived home at 5.00.<\/p>\n<p>I slept for an hour.<\/p>\n<p>We dressed and went to the city for dinner.\u00a0 We walked around a rehabilitated area called Larimer Square and ate at the Lafitte Restaurant.\u00a0 It was a high class restaurant.\u00a0 We all had sea food and wine.\u00a0 Dor paid the bill.<\/p>\n<p>We looked around a store which sold plants and she bought one for Joyce.\u00a0 Dor had met her years ago when she was working at the bookstore at Joslin\u2019s Department Store.\u00a0 Joyce who is a close friend of both Mabs and Dor, is the daughter and wife of rich men. The father owned the Repuiln Drug Stores and Max Struble owns a hardware store.\u00a0 Joyce works in the store and is according to Mabs and Dor, quite liberal.\u00a0 She is now deeply involved with NOW, the National Organization of Women.\u00a0 She has done many services for Mabs and Dor and they always visit her when in town.\u00a0 I remember meeting her only once.<\/p>\n<p>We took Dor to the airport.\u00a0 Her plane wasn\u2019t until about 4.00.\u00a0 We had a soft drink and talked with her until about 2.00.\u00a0 Both Edna and I had some items to show her.\u00a0 Edna\u2019s were items used in her teaching, letters concerning Alice Garrison\u2019s will, her plans for a cookbook. I had a few items on religion, ESP and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Dor was sure she wouldn\u2019t go to sleep and miss her plane, so we left.\u00a0 We made good time, getting home about 3.00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>20 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Friday<\/strong><br \/>\nI slept late.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed at home today.<\/p>\n<p>We three took a walk down the road.\u00a0 Mabs and Edna discussed the various flowers and shrubs.\u00a0 Tourists have scattered a good deal of trash around and we took back aluminum which Edna sells.<\/p>\n<p>Mabs worked in Edna\u2019s garden.<\/p>\n<p>Edna showed me how to put new zippers in 2 of the dresses Claire gave me.\u00a0 Under her instruction, I did most of it except the machine sewing.<\/p>\n<p>We had more discussion.\u00a0 Mabs gave more detail on the assault she had undergone when a young black man had attempted to rape and murder her.\u00a0 She fought him off; he then stabbed her 3 times and threw two objects at her face, leaving her for dead.\u00a0 She described the plastic surgery she had which was remarkably successful.<\/p>\n<p>I learned of the financial situation of each sister.\u00a0 Mabs is able to get along on her annuity, supplemented by her home teaching.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think the nursery is returning anything to her and her partner that they don\u2019t put back in the business but she says they have a firm foundation and an excellent reputation.\u00a0 The house is run down and needs much work but she refuses to sell it on account of the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Edna plans to retire in another year.\u00a0 She will get retirement pay from the school district until old enough to draw social security.\u00a0 She makes twice the salary I do and Alice left her $17,000.\u00a0 Most of her surplus has gone into the house and she still has more to do.<\/p>\n<p>Edna made preparations for the return of Sue, to whom she has rented the downstairs.\u00a0 Sue is expected this weekend\u00a0 Edna has cooking, laundry and sleeping facilities already upstairs, is moving her dishes and cooking equipment.<\/p>\n<p>I washed my hair.<\/p>\n<p>For dinner we had some boned chicken on boiled potatoes and a salad.<\/p>\n<p>I read <em>Radicalism in America<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Went to bed about 12.00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>21 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Saturday<\/strong><br \/>\nI slept until 9.00.<\/p>\n<p>Mabs and Eddie had walked with dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Mabs and I had honey dew melon, and egg and toast for breakfast.\u00a0 Eddie ate coffee cake.<\/p>\n<p>I packed.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie offered to finish the sewing on my dresses while I changed sheets on the beds.\u00a0 Mabs will move upstairs.\u00a0 Mabs continued with her gardening projects at which she worked most of the day.<\/p>\n<p>I had a half hour\u2019s walk.\u00a0 I went up the road on property above Eddie\u2019s place owned by Johns Mansville.\u00a0 It was a beautiful sunny day.\u00a0 The wild flowers were he best I have ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie and I left for the airport at 12.00. Mabs stayed back.\u00a0 Eddie made one stop at an electrical shop and I purchased some grapes and a can of salted nuts, as a meal was not going to be served on the plane.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie and I discussed the reunion we sisters had had, agreeing that it had been very successful.\u00a0 We are all concerned about each other and reassured that we are all well.\u00a0 Even Mabs is in a better condition that we had expected, though we wish she didn\u2019t smoke or drink so much.\u00a0 Edna said they were pleased that I was happy, had friends and are now convinced that my retirement is taken care of.\u00a0 She asked if I thought they were selfish.\u00a0 I told her the whole country was living at a level which was beyond its deserts.<\/p>\n<p>My own conclusions are that although not racist and although they back many progressive ideas and movements, they require to accept the seriousness of the situation.\u00a0 All have faith that reformist solutions can and probably will be found to our national problems.\u00a0 They are bound by ties to loved ones and property they own.\u00a0 Dor is so adamantly anti-religion that she cannot accept any phenomena which she regards as supernatural.\u00a0 She also lacks sympathy with all living things and to certain extent with people.\u00a0 I did make some headway with all of them in leading them to view extra-sensory occurrences as real.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived at the airport at 1.30.\u00a0 Edna did not come in.<\/p>\n<p>The plane, a Continental flight to San Francisco by way of Colorado Springs and Albuquerque, left at 2.35.\u00a0 I had a window seat.\u00a0 At Albuquerque I got off the plane and walked around the airport.\u00a0 I was pleased with the tiles of Indian designs in the passageway and interested in the Kachina dolls.\u00a0 On the flight we had good vies of the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, Death Valley and the Sierras.<\/p>\n<p>I read <em>Radicalism in America<\/em>, ate my grapes and nuts.\u00a0 Soft drinks and nuts were served twice.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived at 6.14 San Francisco time.\u00a0 I took the limousine in to the city, walked up to Geary to get the bus.\u00a0 I waited nearly an hour.\u00a0 When it finally came, the drive told me that there had been two mishaps at the East Bay terminal.\u00a0 The brakes of one bus went out and a woman slipped and hurt her head and an ambulance had to be called.<\/p>\n<p>I transferred to the Masonic bus, was home by 8.00.<\/p>\n<p>I made some spaghetti with canned tomatoes and ate it.<\/p>\n<p>I unpacked.<\/p>\n<p>Went to bed at 10.30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>22 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Sunday<\/strong><br \/>\nI got up at 8.00.<\/p>\n<p>Made journal entries.<\/p>\n<p>A little after 10.00, I went up to the Hayes Neighborhood Coop to buy a few items of produce.\u00a0 It is now open on Sunday, but not until 11.00.\u00a0 So I took a short walk in Golden Gate Park.\u00a0 My sense of smell, which began to come back my last day in Colorado, returned in the park and I could smell the flowers.\u00a0 The little coop still didn\u2019t have its produce out, so I went over to Petrini\u2019s and purchased a few items.<\/p>\n<p>Prepared a meal, ate and washed dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Made more journal entries.<\/p>\n<p>Pressed clothes for an hour and a half.<\/p>\n<p>Lay down for 2 \u00bd hours but just dozed.<\/p>\n<p>Ate some watermelon.<\/p>\n<p>On the radio I heard that Muni drivers had voted on a contract offered by the supervisors.\u00a0 If it was not accepted, they would go on strike and buses wouldn\u2019t be running tomorrow.\u00a0 Betty Barclay called me and said she would call me tomorrow morning if the buses weren\u2019t running, she would give me a ride.\u00a0 However, before I went to bed I heard the contract had been accepted.<\/p>\n<p>I had hoped to type on my journal but didn\u2019t get at it.\u00a0 I was very tired.<\/p>\n<p>I read newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Went to bed at 12.00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>23 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Monday<\/strong><br \/>\nWas up at 6.10 and got to work on time.<\/p>\n<p>Dor phoned, saying she wouldn\u2019t be in.\u00a0 She is suffering from bursitis in her arm and shoulder caused by referring to service documents at the same time while at the computer.\u00a0 They had had a busy week in the Center.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita is taking AST instruction, in the mornings.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Galbraith brought in the Caracas Metro contract with extensive revision to be made. 1976 \u2013 Tuesday<\/strong><br \/>\nDor phones that her arm was still giving her trouble and she wouldn\u2019t be in.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the print-out of the Galbraith contract and had a few errors that had been overlooked.\u00a0 Delivered it to him for further checking.<\/p>\n<p>Got Eddie on telephone to her I safely arrived.\u00a0 Told her about my return trip.\u00a0 Told her I had had the most enjoyable vacation of my life, which pleased her.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita had gone to ATS class.<\/p>\n<p>Ate my lunch at my desk.<\/p>\n<p>Saw a film in the employee series, \u201cIsles of Paradise,\u201d which had been advertised as showing life in the South Sea Islands.\u00a0 However, it was a mere 20 minutes showing of exhibits in a Hawaiian [Polynesian Center]\u00a0 constructed and made by the Mormon church to display Polynesian cultures.\u00a0 I heard complaints about the artificial character of the piece.<\/p>\n<p>I went in the bank today with last week\u2019s check and got cash.\u00a0 The weather was pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon I made corrections in the Galbraith contract and ran off the corrected pages and Marquita did the same on Becnal\u2019s contract.\u00a0 She had some difficulty with some of the changes but I let her experiment until she asked for help.<\/p>\n<p>I got home in good time.<\/p>\n<p>Exercised.<\/p>\n<p>After 6.00 meditation I went to get my plant from Magnolia.\u00a0 Christians were not there and on my inquiry, Magnolia told me they had moved.\u00a0 From her way of speaking it seemed to me there may have been a disagreement.\u00a0 Magnolia gave me very little news of the Temple, perhaps because she wanted to get some sleep before going to work.\u00a0 She had been conducting a porch sale of her surplus belongings.<\/p>\n<p>I prepared dinner, ate and washed dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Typed in my journal from 9.00 to 11.00, doing 4 pages.\u00a0 On the last page the machine was very slow in returning the carriage and I was afraid that something was wrong with the motor.<\/p>\n<p>I read newspapers for an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Went to bed at 1.00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>25 August &#8211; Magnolia found a ride for us.<\/p>\n<p>I did dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Had some toast and peanut butter and toast and jam and read newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Went to bed at 4.00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>26 August &#8211; 1976 \u2013 Thursday<\/strong><br \/>\nSlept until 6.30.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t have any breakfast.\u00a0 Ate an orange at work.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Dor nor I had any work all day.\u00a0 After Marquita finished her class in the morning, she had miscellaneous work.\u00a0 Documents to do on ATS.<\/p>\n<p>We had discussions on social matters, such as ____ ___\u00a0 limits, the waste of the fashion___ men\u2019s vests (my opinion) and so on and finally roles of blacks in society (Dor and Marquita oppose going out of one\u2019s way to improve relations), which became somewhat heated.<\/p>\n<p>I ate lunch on the PG&amp;E steps.\u00a0 The day was quite hot.<\/p>\n<p>At home I exercised.<\/p>\n<p>Took my laundry to the laundromat.<\/p>\n<p>Prepared and ate dinner.<\/p>\n<p>I intended to do some chores and wash my hair but Bonnie Beck called. She wanted to come over and talk to me about doing an article for the Temple newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>She arrived about 9.30 and stayed a couple of hours.\u00a0 She is on sick leave from her job, although Jim had cured whatever her illness was.\u00a0 Don is expected back from the p.l. on 1 September.\u00a0 Bonnie lives with Pat Grunnet now, where Liz Forman used to be.\u00a0 Pat works also at Juvenile Hall.\u00a0 Bob Davis is working on the apartment construction in LA.<\/p>\n<p>Bonnie had no particular item in mind for me to write for the newspaper.\u00a0 I told her of my ideas of writing something concerning the high agricultural civilization of dark people and how it has usually been taken over by lighter nomadic peoples who then enslave or exterminate the dark races.\u00a0 We are not sure this theme would be suitable for the newspaper but she thought I should give the material to Jim to use with the congregation and to Lois Ponts who is in charge of a group of Junior High level children.<\/p>\n<p>I also suggested for the newspaper questionnaire on the Bible which would give the contradictor answers which Jim uses to show it unreliability.\u00a0 I read to her Dor\u2019s [Edith\u2019s sister] list of quotations on religious belief and atheism.<\/p>\n<p>Bonnie was indignant with Liz and freely gave me more information on her disposition.\u00a0 She said Liz had ___ ___ concerned ___ ___ comfort and very unsympathetic about other people.\u00a0 ___ ____ ___ to demanding with children.\u00a0 The people had done the work in the housing committee. Bonnie particularly _____ her for persuading Garry to leave when he seemed to be adapting well to the Temple.\u00a0 Garry is with Liz, Bonnie said.\u00a0 It was unforgivable that she just dumped Rene\u00e9 instead of placing her with someone else.\u00a0 Liz spent much time on her make-up.\u00a0 When I inquired what had led to Liz\u2019s leaving the Temple now, Bonnie thought it was the prospect of getting money form her grandfather.\u00a0 Jim had always known what she was like.\u00a0 She was mentally unstable and he gave her every chance.<\/p>\n<p>Bonnie told me Linda [Swaney] Dunn\u2019s daughter is now in Juvenile hall.\u00a0 She used cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol and has been on the \u201cpill\u201d since she was 11 \u00bd.
