As noted in the <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=30270\">2010 edition<\/a> of <i>the jonestown report<\/i>, the slang term <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20260110190348\/https:\/\/financial-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com\/Jonestown+defense\">\u201cJonestown defense\u201d<\/a> has been coined to mean a company&#8217;s \u201c[d]efense against a corporate takeover in the form of a poison pill so strong that it threatens the survivability of the target company.\u201d The phrase has picked up traction in recent years, with entries in various online financial dictionaries, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/s\/suicidepill.asp\">investopedia.com<\/a>, as well as its own <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jonestown_defense\">Wikipedia<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201cJonestown\u201d as a standalone \u2013 sometimes capped, sometimes not \u2013\u00a0also continues to pick up and shed definitions. A recent addition for \u201cjonestown\u201d noted in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=Jonestown&amp;defid=4890587\">Urban Dictionary<\/a>, seemingly with only a passing acknowledgment of its root, is as \u201cthe mythical place people say they are when they are in need of a fix.\u201d Other definitions at the site do include references to the 1978 tragedy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even as the expression \u201cdrinking the Kool-Aid\u201d has become firmly established in the national lexicon, other phrases with their origins in the Jonestown tragedy are beginning to take root.
