{"id":40238,"date":"2013-10-13T03:19:10","date_gmt":"2013-10-13T03:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alternativejonestown.com\/?page_id=40238"},"modified":"2018-11-12T15:07:30","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T23:07:30","slug":"07-02a-botha-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=40238","title":{"rendered":"Scars Of The Past: A Memoir To The Jonestown Massacre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our Eyes stare no more<br \/>\nThey have nothing left to see<br \/>\nThere are no more hopes<br \/>\nThere are no more dreams<br \/>\nLives sucked away as quickly as they came to be<br \/>\nPromises, expectations, abilities and accomplishments<br \/>\nAll washed away with a few deadly drops<br \/>\nTo create such beauty and unity<br \/>\nOnly to wither away in vain, due to Your selfish, paranoid yet infallible words<br \/>\nThe Massacre of our children, has sealed our fates<\/p>\n<p>The selfish,<br \/>\nThe greedy,<br \/>\nThe malicious intent of a man not worthy of his influence and power.<br \/>\nSuch seduction, such sweet manipulation<br \/>\nThe power to have us live your fears, and taste your tears<br \/>\nThe power that tainted our vision from the beauty that is rightfully ours<br \/>\nThe years we should have had<br \/>\nThe gift of possibility<br \/>\nThe journey of life<br \/>\nThe life that was rightfully ours<br \/>\nThe life before the silence<br \/>\nWe willed our happiness into existence<br \/>\nThrough blood and sweat<br \/>\nThrough hardship inspired by hope and love<br \/>\nThrough unity and family, we became one<\/p>\n<p>You are our savior Father, the answer to the pain that divides us<br \/>\nYou challenge it all, you stand as our salvation<br \/>\nWho says we cannot be equal?<br \/>\nWho says we cannot be one?<br \/>\nWho gives them the right to dominate and dictate our existence?<br \/>\nYour promises spoke against it<br \/>\nYour solution was one of freedom\u2026<br \/>\nOf trust<br \/>\nOf unity<br \/>\nOf family<br \/>\nOf life<br \/>\nA life worth fighting for<br \/>\nA life worth sacrificing for<br \/>\nA life worth dying for<\/p>\n<p>You seemed so righteous, displayed such strength<br \/>\nIt was all meant to be<br \/>\nYou were the chosen one<br \/>\nOur fearless leader<br \/>\nOur loving Father<\/p>\n<p>So we gave you our existence<br \/>\nWe gave you our future<br \/>\nOur loyalty, our dreams<br \/>\nOur youth and our futures<br \/>\nWe offered you our souls<br \/>\nLead us into Your promised land<br \/>\nWe give you our trust<br \/>\nLead us away from pain, into brighter days<\/p>\n<p>Yet&#8230;after it all<\/p>\n<p>Silence now settles over the once bustling complex<br \/>\nThe silence that reminds us of what was, and shall never again be<br \/>\nThe deafening silence invoked by the absence of life<br \/>\nWe gave you all we were<br \/>\nWe gave you all we had<br \/>\nWe gave you our lives<br \/>\nYou promised us unity. And here we lie. United in stench and heat<br \/>\nThe brighter day you promised came early<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s heat scorching our bodies as one\u2026<br \/>\nOne race<br \/>\nOne color<br \/>\nOne fate<br \/>\nOne message<\/p>\n<p>We have paid the ultimate price for our dream<br \/>\nWe have made final sacrifice<br \/>\nWe gave it all for freedom<br \/>\nYet free we are not<br \/>\nAnd the dream that we bled for died with us that day.<\/p>\n<p>How beautiful you were Father<br \/>\nHow beautiful the vision you had for us all<br \/>\nHow beautiful the sanctuary you bestowed upon us, Father<br \/>\nHow beautifully you deceived us all<br \/>\nHow selfishly you betrayed all we stood for, Father<br \/>\nHow tragically you executed us all<br \/>\nWe laid down our lives<br \/>\nOur final moments poisoned by your words<br \/>\nYour murderous message has been sent<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who do not remember the past&#8230;. are condemned to repeat it\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet as time flows forward, quietly we fade from memory<br \/>\nThe lesson learned fading as well<br \/>\nWe are the Ghosts of November&#8230;.<br \/>\nMemories of all that could have been<br \/>\nRemember us&#8230;<br \/>\nFor we are Scars of the past.<\/p>\n<p><i>(Max Botha is a musician in South Africa who says that \u201cmy girlfriend is the Poet\u201d and that she was the one who asked him to try to write.
