Leo Ryan in 1978, was appointed to the congressional task force on gun violence following the Newtown, Connecticut school killings. \u201cThis issue is both personal and professional for me,\u201d Speier was <a href=\"http:\/\/sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com\/2013\/01\/04\/jonestown-massacre-survivor-speier-named-to-gun-control-task-force\/\">quoted<\/a> as saying following her appointment in early January. The bipartisan task force <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/124384563\/Gun-Violence-Prevention-Task-Force-Recommendations\">issued its recommendations<\/a> in early February, although little action was taken on them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20260217173342\/https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/\">Atlas Obscura<\/a>, a website devoted to highlighting the less well known but interesting places to visit in the world, recently included the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121224021252\/http:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/jonestown-memorial\">Jonestown memorial<\/a> at Evergreen Cemetery. The accompanying article summarizes the history leading to the placement of the \u201cfour modest plaques\u201d listing the names of the Jonestown dead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/09-cult-pizza.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47806 alignleft\" alt=\"09-cult pizza\" src=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/09-cult-pizza.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/09-cult-pizza.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/09-cult-pizza-160x120.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/dining\/index.ssf\/2013\/04\/david_koresh_jonestown_victims.html\">Cult Pizza<\/a>, a pizza parlor in Grand Rapids, Michigan, drew attention in April 2013 for putting portraits of controversial religious figures, as well as a photo of the Jonestown dead following November 18, 1978, on the restaurant&#8217;s walls. The restaurant and the artwork are the products of Ryan Cappelletti, who says \u201che wants western Michigan to be open to a full range of artistic expression and not to lose its cool when faced with challenging images.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>In addition to these news articles, Jonestown and Peoples Temple is often mentioned in the mainstream media both as cultural icons and in serious considerations of religious and political issues.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal21\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 26.5pt; color: red; background-color: #f8f3e9;\">Jonestown Cited in Political Contexts<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Is Glenn Beck&#8217;s Independence, USA the Next Jonestown?<\/b><br \/>\nJanuary 12, 2013, <i>Newscorpse.com<\/i><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscorpse.com\/ncWP\/?p=8830\">http:\/\/www.newscorpse.com\/ncWP\/?p=8830<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>In the discussion of Glenn Beck&#8217;s vision of a utopian community, the writer \u2013 identified only as Mark \u2013 notes:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#8217;s troubling is the notion that Beck wants to create a segregated community of followers who believe in his vision and will strike out on their own to build a self-reliant, communal society based on his twisted brand of evangelism and with him as its leader. Sound familiar? It is precisely what Jim Jones, a pastor from California, did when he assembled his flock in Guyana to form what he called Jonestown. This relates to the actual, as well as the illusionary and most of the time to the illusionary. Sometimes it leads to dramatic and unfortunate events like Jonestown. Fear can do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After giving a short, somewhat loaded history of the Temple, the article concludes: \u201cDespite the tragedy, Democrats from the president on down have continued to do almost exactly what Jones did and get away with it: embrace minorities, alert a partisan media to the embrace, woo the minorities for their support\u2026 In 2012, this strategy would seem to have paid off. It then continues, \u201c[A]ll seem to have a certain mix of factors that make things go wrong: the strong emphasis of an impending apocalyptic event is mixed with autocratic leadership issues (which may involve a shady entrepreneurial aspect, and\/or issues of psychopathology), and significantly, with a real threat from the outside world that seems to confirm, trigger and intensify already existent suspicions about the evils of government agencies or other secular authorities.
