{"id":65444,"date":"2015-11-30T22:27:24","date_gmt":"2015-11-30T22:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=65444"},"modified":"2015-11-30T22:27:24","modified_gmt":"2015-11-30T22:27:24","slug":"the-ballad-of-the-jim-jones-movement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=65444","title":{"rendered":"The Ballad of the Jim Jones Movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From his early childhood he looked in the sky<br \/>\nand decided there\u2019s nothing there to hear me when I cry.<br \/>\nBecause he accepted the truth, and was not deceived<br \/>\nHe declared it\u2019s only in me will I ever believe.<\/p>\n<p>He took note of the oppressed, their pain and sorrow,<br \/>\nAnd longed for the day when they would have a brighter tomorrow.<br \/>\nHe knew that the racism and injustice they endured mustn\u2019t always be.<br \/>\nThese were his people and they would be free!<\/p>\n<p>Many had tasted of that bitter cup \u2013 racism, injustice and poverty.<br \/>\nBut never enough to have the courage to be lifted up.<br \/>\nHe bowed his head filled with sorrow<br \/>\nBecause he knew it would take much suffering before there would be a brighter tomorrow<br \/>\nBut he lifted up his head in the socialist sign,<br \/>\nAnd shouted give me the burden and the victory shall be mine.<br \/>\nYes here\u2019s one, I\u2019ll go, send me.<br \/>\nSo he came alone, nobody but he.<\/p>\n<p>He cared for all people, but nobody wanted to understand,<br \/>\nBut his chosen people were the poor oppressed man.<br \/>\nThey were so helpless, tired and alone<br \/>\nBecause nobody seemed to care how much they were being wronged.<\/p>\n<p>So he came to them with a plan.<br \/>\nHe ministered to them in ways they could understand.<br \/>\nHe showed them that he really cared, and that his love and power, couldn\u2019t be compared.<br \/>\nHe let them know that he too had drunk from that bitter cup,<br \/>\nAnd that his body had been crucified, that he had been lifted up.<br \/>\nThat is lifelong fight had been for justice and equality, and strongly united, his people would be free.<\/p>\n<p>He dealt with every problem, and he met every need,<br \/>\nAnd his people declared, he\u2019s God a Savior indeed.<br \/>\nIt wasn\u2019t always this way you see.<br \/>\nSo you all can be gods, just like me.<br \/>\nWhen you\u2019ve had enough from the bitter cup<br \/>\nThen you will be willingly crucified to be lifted up.<\/p>\n<p>He let his people know that he couldn\u2019t be bought and he couldn\u2019t be used.<br \/>\nThat he had paid the price and owed no dues.<br \/>\nHe called no man his friend and considered no place his<br \/>\nThat his hand was on freedom and he would not be moved.<\/p>\n<p>But his enemies have decided that his people shouldn\u2019t be free.<br \/>\nThat they were never going to know the joy of having equality.<br \/>\nSo the enemy crept in the night<br \/>\nHoping to destroy their dream, to take their lives.<br \/>\nBut their protective was on the scene.<br \/>\nHe jumped on the front line and shouted, no, take me.<br \/>\nBut from the corners of the earth a united people gathered<br \/>\nTogether greatly in battle readiness and declared, this can never be.<br \/>\nWe have come this far in unity and united we\u2019ll stand to meet our enemy.<\/p>\n<p>He turned to them with a haughty salute<br \/>\nFor then he knew they had grasped the truth.<br \/>\nThey were strongly united in the knowledge of socialism divine.<br \/>\nThe enemy then realized that the victory was already lost, and in fighting there was no use.<br \/>\nThese people have had enough from that bitter cup.<br \/>\nThey were willing and ready to be lifted up!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Lynetta Jones (1975)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From his early childhood he looked in the sky and decided there\u2019s nothing there to hear me when I cry.
