It was <em><i>caught up<\/i><\/em> in a moment of a twinkling of an eye. (Pause) We\u2019re sure waiting on that one. Got two feelers anyway. That\u2019d been a hell of a job, selling, we got to live out on the ranch, an orphanage or children\u2019s home. So we get a little of that money in, we will buy us a boat and we will get some shit moving here. (Pause) What would you do? My last qu\u2013 question, it\u2019s ten after ten. What would you do? Sister Etta [Thompson] said we would say uh, well uh, come and get us all. Well, (tape edit) (unintelligible) you kinda move that essentially that\u2019s it. But you should say whether you go to Russia, you don\u2019t. What <em><i>would<\/i><\/em> you do? What would be your demand?<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Voices in crowd: <\/b><\/strong>(Murmurs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs) How many want to stay here and fight it out?<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Long cheer followed by extended ululaltion)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Oh, shit. (pause) Well, us old timers might sit down here and fight it out and s\u2013 send our kids on to Russia and\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Reacts)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (call of protest) We\u2013 we\u2013 we\u2019ll think that through, honey. But I like that sentiment though. We didn\u2019t get this land easy, and they didn\u2019t build it. We did it. We ain\u2019t going to lose it easy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> No.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Thank you. Anybody got a unique idea? Who said fight it out?<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Voices in crowd: <\/b><\/strong>(Unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Well, there might be another point of view, it\u2019d be much more wise than that.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Voices in crowd: <\/b><\/strong>(Unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Honey, if we fight it out, there ain\u2019t nobody going nowhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Calls)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> So you better vote for Russia or America, if you\u2013 (chuckles) If you vote\u2013 vote fighting out, when that line gets formed \u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Murmurs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> We would\u2013 we watch folk during that time, oh, some\u2013 some got sick, (laughs) some\u2013 some hiding down behind cupboards. (Pause) Wasn\u2019t long till their asses out there on the line though. (chuckles) But they couldn\u2019t hold up their cutlass [if] somebody watched them, and it wasn\u2019t long until everybody was holding it up. I thought Bruce said it best, Bruce Oliver, what made some people\u2013 Bruce could put it better, I can\u2019t remember the exact words he said. First I was afraid to die. What was the next state\u2013 statement? Say, after several hours of that shit, I wished I <em><i>could<\/i><\/em> die. Bruce said, by god, before it was over with, I didn\u2019t give a shit one way or the other.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Murmurs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> And I like that uh, Bruce was volunteering to go back and do a little job, and his wife [Shanda James Oliver] was volunteering at the same time, that\u2019s a lovely marriage. He didn\u2019t know she\u2013 I don\u2019t know whether they both made a pact, but she said (Unintelligible) they won\u2019t suspect me, I\u2019m little I\u2013 (trails off). Had a hell of a plan. I don\u2019t\u2013 If I was you, I wouldn\u2019t want to co\u2013 commit no <em><i>shit<\/i><\/em> \u2018cause some of these people got some plans. You don\u2019t know who you settin\u2019 by. Some of these little old ladies, they got plans, honey, they got\u2013 they\u2019ll\u2013 they\u2019ll have you sewed up and throwed in the Oakland Bay, and you won\u2019t know what even hit you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughter)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> I\u2019ve never read some of these fucking plans, I don\u2019t mean they\u2019re just s\u2013 stupid plans, I mean, ye gods. But Bruce said (Call out) I am ready, you can be afraid of dying. (Conversational) That\u2019s why some of you tonight that put up your hands, we ought to get to talk to you, \u2018cause we ought to\u2013 you ought to get the counseling started, I want the counseling started immediately. All take care\u2013 all you need to do out is there on that goddamned line, that\u2019d take care of you. Let the rain fall on you, and get down there and lay down on the ground, and get up off the ground, go get a shower and back on the line.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Murmurs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Even though I did fix all the food, hell, I killed everything we had, we wasn\u2019t sure it was over with, I killed the chickens and the fucking hogs and <em><i>shit<\/i><\/em>. We ate. You talk about the last supper, honey, we\u2019d eat it. (Laughs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Cheers approvingly)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Hey! And if that fucking army come up that st\u2013 Uh, if that fucking army had (chuckles) come up that first s\u2013 squadron wasn\u2019t very much, we\u2019d eat them <em><i>too<\/i><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughter)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> They\u2019d say, where\u2019s our boys? We don\u2019t know shit. We just had the last supper with the Lord.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Murmurs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> That\u2019s what made Bruce able to say, (Calls out) \u201cDon\u2019t make no difference to <em><i>me<\/i><\/em>. First I was afraid of dying, hours later I wish I <em><i>could<\/i><\/em> die. And then some more hours it got me so steeled and so ready and so I look at life and how it was and how the enemies are and what life really represents, and I didn\u2019t give a shit one way or the <em><i>other<\/i><\/em>.\u201d (Moderates, then builds) And that\u2019s what happened to me. Too many times I went around that circle, too many times before then, too many times I grabbed their arms and loved them and kissed them and cried over them. Shit, when you get through dying like that, I\u2019m ready for <em><i>anything<\/i><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Cheers)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Ready for anything. Sit. Now I\u2019m gone get these things taken care of, \u2018cause we just gone go down the line.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Voices:<\/b><\/strong> (Unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p>Pause.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Rhonda Page, I was so proud of her that she got throwed on the ran\u2013 anarchy crew, (unintelligible word) could say, you know Jerry Robinson and shit backwards, and she worked her\u2013 worked <em><i>hard<\/i><\/em> and diligent. Penny [Kerns] said she worked so fucking hard, she even pushed Penny\u2019s ass when she was moving slow.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Woman\u2019s voice off mike:<\/b><\/strong> Yes she did. (Unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs) I like Penny for that. I said, \u201cPenny, how\u2019d she do?\u201d Said, \u201cShit, she pushed me around all day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Chuckles, and then breaks into laughter)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs) Lot of praises, they can uh, be mentioned over public announcement, others could <em><i>do<\/i><\/em> this, if it\u2019d be helpful, and they could probably do some of this. I appreciate leaders getting on the work crew and showing that there\u2019s no stigma. I\u2019m looking for\u2013 forward to the day that <em><i>I<\/i><\/em> can be on the work crew. Every night I start to get out here and work in the night, I say I\u2019m so fucking tired of this radio, I\u2019m going to bury that fucking septic tank. \u2018Cause you don\u2019t understand how much I love work, \u2018cause if I could work with you, some of you, some of you would love to work, \u2018cause when you watching me work, you see I don\u2019t fuck with it. I took that wheelbarrow the last good deal I had, run up and down here faster than they could get the wheelbarrow, and then I\u2019d fill it too. Work is <em><i>delicious<\/i><\/em>. Delightful. You can <em><i>rest<\/i><\/em> after you work. (Clears throat) But I wish I had more time away from crisises, but if you people deliver me from crisises, I\u2019ll go from crew to crew, and that\u2019s the best thing leadership can do, is to get in with the workers, and that\u2019s the best example. That shows. But you keep leaders <em><i>tied up<\/i><\/em> with a bunch of <em><i>shit<\/i><\/em> planning. You know what I mean.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Voices in crowd: <\/b><\/strong>Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Well, that\u2019s good. Learning Crew. (Clears throat) We\u2019re having to read all those good reports off tomorrow. And I\u2019m riding over just the little things, because I don\u2019t want to keep you late. So uh, be sure to know that just because you do not get mentioned tonight, that doesn\u2019t mean that you didn\u2019t deserve to get mentioned, you just\u2013 you getting kind of a break because it\u2019s the night meeting to look at the beauty of death. Revolutionary death. The privilege for dying for what you believe. And if you\u2019re having a problem with dying, I do want those names to start counseling, \u2018cause we can <em><i>help<\/i><\/em> you with it, we can really help you. (Pause) Santiago Rosa<strong><b>,<\/b><\/strong> since he went out and met some of them fellas out there in that jungle, he\u2019s doing good in his work, and his attitude is excellent, much better. You see, that\u2019s why we have to have folk go out there, two weeks two days. And that proves that there\u2019s all kinds of strokes, different strokes for different folks. We don\u2019t <em><i>like<\/i><\/em> the different strokes, I don\u2019t <em><i>like<\/i><\/em> that walk myself, do you? Miraculous, miraculous, uh, protection. Now is that the last of the Learning Crew? Garnett Johnson been working real good and so is his attitude, last two days. You keep that up, you only got\u2013 I want to hear at the end of the day how he\u2019s doing, \u2018cause two weeks is the kind of a period I like to get people off. In the last two days, Noir Blanch\u2019s work is\u2013 his attitude is good, he even worked on his <em><i>break<\/i><\/em>. Now that is good. Noir Bu\u2013 uh, will <em><i>rest<\/i><\/em> in the uh, the main dorm area. He\u2019ll spend his nights there with Penny\u2019s situation, but he\u2019ll be off the work crew. Jair Baker, last two days, his work and attitude have been real good. We\u2019ll hear about that tomorrow and he\u2019ll go back to uh\u2013 What was he doing? Now don\u2019t any of you people take advantage to go back on this crew, \u2018cause it gets worse and worse. Jair will stay in the uh, area, he likes the light, but uh, where does he work, if\u2013 if he goes off tomorrow. Hmm? The shipment, when we get the damn shipment out, we got two hundred fly swatters, and that\u2019ll be a <em><i>help<\/i><\/em>, but let\u2019s make some simple ones up and use them, honey. How many\u2019ll get the fly swatters out, \u2018cause we\u2013 we\u2019ve had these damned flies damned near to zero. (Clears throat) For a week. (Pause). The motorboat, uh, motor\u2019s already here, I guess. But to <em><i>fish<\/i><\/em> again, we haven\u2019t got enough fish to <em><i>eat<\/i><\/em> yet, but the fish is a marvelous, marvelous fertilizer and it\u2019s marvelous to control \u2018em, I heard that from different\u2013 different ones. Some of you young people ought to think of work as hard as some of the seniors, cleaning out debris and cleaning away these ditches and making the places to plant, and I hope that all those dorms get cleared up like some of the rest, but uh, some issue was raised about uh, hair in the food. Don\u2019t worry about the hair, (unintelligible word) shit (unintelligible word). It\u2019ll just help your shit get through, honey. (Clears throat) It\u2019s <em><i>protein<\/i><\/em>, really. I\u2019m getting paralyzed by fear, my blind eye won\u2019t even open, I know that that night, I\u2019m going off this fucking boat, and I\u2019m supposed to make this good impression\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> And she thought we were going to take out the boat, (unintelligible word) lot of paranoid folk, or she gotta be going (unintelligible under laughter)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> But I thought, (unintelligible). So then, we decided if we went to one service, we should be big, and go to another service. We go to the goddamn Nazarene Church, and I\u2019m settin\u2019 there, one eye\u2019s down, and one eye\u2019s open\u2013 (unintelligible) I\u2019m gonna die, my friends are gonna kill me, we gonna die, we\u2019re all gonna die, when (unintelligible) we\u2019re gonna jump in the fuckin\u2019 (unintelligible word) this goddamn radio, and\u2013 (Laughs) and I look up on the wall, and I swear to Christ, there\u2019s a picture of a sailboat sinking in the water.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs) Picture of a sailboat sinking in the water.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> And I\u2013 And\u2013 Okay. But my\u2013 but my eye\u2019s shut, and (unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs) Only been up three days and three nights.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> Three days (unintelligible word)\u2013 So then\u2013 Oh, this little fucking radio. We\u2019re in Georgetown, you folks are here, and I\u2019m sure that they\u2019re all happy (unintelligible) didn\u2019t get here, and so we\u2019re gettin\u2019 this\u2013 this news to get\u2013\u00a0get over here, and we got the radio on. And this goddamn radio\u2019s talking to\u2013 and so we\u2019re on the radio, and I say, you have to tune this in and\u2013 right? And all I can hear, I know what\u2013 we got all these code signals, you know. Johnny says, that means something to somebody, I don\u2019t know what the fuck\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Cuba.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> Uh, I just\u2013 I just got to Henry Morgan, (unintelligible name) said don\u2019t lift your foot, for the good of the picture, get your shower, I don\u2019t know what the fuck\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> I\u2013 I\u2019m settin\u2019 there trying to talk to these uh, (unintelligible word, twice) that I\u2019m sitting in the room with, and I hear\u2013 (low voice, unintelligible) uh, (speaks in radio code rapidly)\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs) That\u2019s the way that radio sounds when you heard it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> And I can hear back in the background, (radio code, faster) (speaks in radio code rapidly)\u2013 And we got\u2013 and we got\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> We get a new sound in there, it goes\u2013 (radio sound). And then a cow joins us, a cow. (radio noise) We\u2019re gonna die, we\u2019re gonna die. A\u2013 This giant cow pervades our\u2013 our\u2013 invades our radio, and here, (radio code, faster) (speaks in radio code rapidly)\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> This goes on for hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> She heard Mother\u2013 Mother [Marceline Jones] and Stephan [Jones]\u2013 It\u2019s good to laugh about (unintelligible word). She heard Mother talking to Stephan and Stephan is telling Mother we have to die. Her voice (unintelligible word)\u2013 She didn\u2019t know what the hell\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> (unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> What\u2013 We\u2013 \u2018Cause she didn\u2019t really get it all in place, and Mother had to get it all in place, and we were going to go to Cuba in Johnny\u2019s place, and all of you were going to join us, like I said, (unintelligible) going to be taken out from <em><i>George<\/i><\/em>\u2013 uh, from uh, <em><i>Georgetown<\/i><\/em>, but she thought\u2013 thought she gone (Laughs, unintelligible under laughter) She thought they was all\u2013 that she\u2013 they have all been waiting to kill her (laughs) so that they could (unintelligible under laugh).<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> So I decided, okay, okay. (unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> (unintelligible for several sentences) It just goes on and on and on and on. And finally, uh\u2013 what the fuck (unintelligible under breath). I must have passed out about that point. What was the bitchiest thing (unintelligible)?<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> I don\u2019t know. (Laughs)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Patty:<\/b><\/strong> <em><i>Oh<\/i><\/em>. I decided\u2013 I decided, Fine. Die, you son-of-a-bitch. By then I wanted to die, (unintelligible phrase) The other thing is, I got\u2013 I got some kind of sickness, the next day, we had to go to downtown (speaks quickly, unintelligible) I\u2013 I felt sorry the (unintelligible word) couldn\u2019t move, my leg wouldn\u2019t go. I\u2019m okay now, I\u2019m down in the boat, and she saying, (unintelligible word). I said that\u2019s fine. But I\u2013 I\u2013 This is the one request, I want to take that goddamn fucking radio (unintelligible), I have visions of it at night (unintelligible), roger, roger\u2013 roger roger roger roger, and I\u2019ve agreed to go on the boat. I\u2019ve agreed to die, but I took the radio (unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> (Laughs) That\u2019s pretty good, that\u2019s pretty good. She can tell it funnier than that, too, she just\u2013 It was uh, amazing. If you had heard that goddamn radio, you\u2019d be\u2013 it\u2019d be funny to you, \u2018cause that\u2019s all the sounds that fuckin\u2019 radio makes. (Laughs) And she went through that sea thing, and she gone\u2013 they gone throw her off, and she said, one goddamn thing I\u2019m doing, I\u2019m carrying that radio so it can drown too. (Tone sobers) She showed her courage, \u2018cause now she goes every week on the river and out, and last time, boy, her and Rheaviana [Beam] and Tommy [likely Bogue]] had a shit mess\u2013 They had a\u2013 uh, I tell you\u2013 Save that for the next meeting. That\u2019s something else, that was something else. Her and Tommy and Rheaviana. Tommy deserves three cheers for be\u2013 being between the fat bitch and the slim bitch. (Laughs) Where is Tommy?<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Voices in crowd: <\/b><\/strong>(unintelligible)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> He\u2019s in Georgetown getting glasses. Bless his heart. (unintelligible word) It\u2019s funny how he gets along with those others. But they <em><i>all<\/i><\/em> three got on a different boats.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Reacts)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> The last time they all three got on different boats, and we\u2019ll save that for the next time, because we <em><i>must<\/i><\/em> hear, how the three got back together again. (Laughs) Stand up.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Crowd:<\/b><\/strong> (Reacts)<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Jones:<\/b><\/strong> Woo. I love you. I can\u2019t get over just this week\u2019s alone, too many to mention, that stands out so sweet to me, (unintelligible name), with one-third vision gone with glaucoma, one-half vision gone in the other eye, and now it\u2019s all reversed. Diana McKnight, dying with sickle cell and her kidneys being passed through her urine, and then went into Georgetown, and the tests found her kidneys \u2013 <em><i>mighty<\/i><\/em> socialism! \u2013 normal. And the miracles, the miracles. All of our people coulda been lost with the high seas, had it not been for me calling the\u2013 back the boat, delaying it. <em><i>Miracles<\/i><\/em>.
