\"03b-guinn\"<\/a>Sometimes getting a publisher and author to agree on a book\u2019s title seems to take longer than researching and writing the book itself. Shortly after I began work on my Jim Jones\/Peoples Temple project in January 2014, I came across one of Lynetta Jones\u2019s poems that included a stanza about her son\u2019s followers being ready to be lifted up because they\u2019d drunk too long from a \u201cbitter cup.\u201d That seemed to me to suggest a perfect title: The Bitter Cup: Jim Jones, Peoples Temple and Jonestown<\/em>. I told my editor at Simon & Schuster about it, he liked it, too, and until May of this year, that was the title.<\/p>\n

In May, I flew to New York to meet with my editor and also with Simon & Schuster\u2019s marketing\/publicity team assigned to the book. The plan was to select the photos we\u2019d include, and begin mapping out marketing strategy and my publicity tour when the book is published in April 2017. They like to get these things worked out well in advance. I was surprised to learn that the marketing people had another title in mind, taken from a line spoken by Jones on November 18, 1978: Someday Everybody Dies: Jim Jones, Peoples Temple and Jonestown<\/em>. I didn\u2019t like it as much as The Bitter Cup<\/em>. The counterargument was that the title needed to be more dramatic.<\/p>\n

We agreed to discuss it further, and I flew home to Texas the next day. I checked my messages when the plane landed and there was a new one. The book title question had been kicked all the way up to the Simon & Schuster publisher himself, who didn\u2019t want either of the two choices. He wanted one word, and one word only: Jonestown<\/em>. (My last nonfiction book for Simon & Schuster was simply titled Manson<\/em>, and sold pretty well.)<\/p>\n

Over the next several days, I insisted that Jonestown<\/em> on its own wouldn\u2019t work. The point of the book is to tell the whole story of Peoples Temple \u2013 all the good and all the honorable as well as the horrific \u2013 and Jonestown<\/em> would give potential readers the impression that the book was no different from all the others that glossed over everything else to focus on the events of a few terrible days. The title needed to give the sense of a complete history, how things happened and why instead of just what occurred in Guyana. (There are 52 chapters in the book, and Leo Ryan doesn\u2019t arrive in Georgetown until Chapter 48; chapters 51 and 52 are about the years afterward.)<\/p>\n

To Simon & Schuster\u2019s credit, the people there listened, so on April 11, 2017, the book The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple<\/em> will be published. It\u2019s my belief \u2013 maybe \u201chope\u201d would be a better word \u2013 that Road<\/em> indicates the objective telling of a complete story. There\u2019s no going back now; the title\u2019s set, and is already in use in advance press releases, Amazon listing, etc. I can\u2019t say that I like it better than The Bitter Cup<\/em>, but I\u2019m still satisfied with it, and hope all of you who\u2019ve helped me with this project will be all right with it, too. In trying to tell the story right, every word counts, including those in the title.<\/p>\n
