{"id":67827,"date":"2016-10-21T08:31:54","date_gmt":"2016-10-21T15:31:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=67827"},"modified":"2026-03-02T17:02:55","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T01:02:55","slug":"art-notes-2016","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=67827","title":{"rendered":"Art Notes 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/03-00-JT-art-section-art.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-67833\" src=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/03-00-JT-art-section-art.jpg\" alt=\"03-00-jt-art-section-art\" width=\"267\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a>In addition to the stories by artists, composers and filmmakers in this section of <em>the\u00a0jonestown report<\/em>, we learned of these other developments within the past year:<br \/>\n<a name=\"drama\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal21\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 26.5pt; color: red; background-color: #f8f3e9;\">Jonestown in Performing Arts<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Sacred in Opera Initiative of the National Opera Association has selected Andrew Jamieson\u2019s 2014 chamber opera <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewbarnesjamieson.com\/heaven-down-here\"><em>Heaven Down Here<\/em><\/a> for a presentation at the 2017 National Opera Convention in Santa Barbara, CA on January 5th. Three singers and staging director Megan Meyer will perform a condensed version of the first two scenes, which present a fictional Temple member named Anne during her first visit to Peoples Temple. The performance will be staged with piano accompaniment in a conference hall during the convention. A panel discussion will follow the performance, during which Jamieson will discuss his understanding of Peoples Temple and his vision for better understanding of the Jonestown tragedy through meditation and exploration in sound, music and drama.<\/p>\n<p><em>Heaven Down Here <\/em>was fully staged and performed with dancers and an orchestra in June 2014 in Oakland, California.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Jamieson\u2019s previous articles about his work appear in the <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=64783\">2015<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=61742\">2014<\/a> editions of <em>the jonestown report<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Jonestown: A Multimedia Chamber Opera, <\/em>written by composer and conductor Evan Williams, received an open staged reading on November 13, 2015 at the University of Cincinnati\u2019s College-Conservatory of Music.<\/p>\n<p>The first act of this opera was submitted and successfully defended as Williams\u2019 dissertation to receive his Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati. Excerpts from the reading can heard on <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/evan-williams-16\/sets\/jonestown-excerpts-from-staged-reading\">Soundcloud<\/a>. In addition, video footage of the entire reading can be viewed on YouTube, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yFAuQdUj3QA&amp;t=499s\">Acts I and II<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tly44oTiFLU&amp;t=156s\">Acts III and IV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Evan Williams\u2019 reflection on the creation of this opera appears in <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=61716\">the 2014 edition<\/a> of <em>the jonestown report<\/em>. More information about Mr. Williams and his music can be found at his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evanwilliamsmusic.info\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A collection of arts groups in Brown County, Indiana produced a dramatic work in February which drew upon the experiences of two of the state\u2019s utopian groups, including Peoples Temple. \u201cUtopia: 21st Century Reflections on the Pursuit of Perfection\u201d featured original music and narration presented by local artists in a production that \u201cfollows the triumphs and tribulations of characters in a fictional utopia,\u201d according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idsnews.com\/article\/2016\/02\/arts-groups-to-present-utopian-production\">production\u2019s publicity<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a name=\"books\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal21\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 26.5pt; color: red; background-color: #f8f3e9;\">Jonestown in Literature<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sikivu Hutchinson\u2019s book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.com\/White-Nights-Paradise-Sikivu-Hutchinson\/dp\/0692267131\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1473875083&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=White+Nights%2C+Black+Paradise\">White Nights, Black Paradise<\/a><\/em>, which was reviewed by <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=64751\">Annie Dawid<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=64755\">Rebecca Moore<\/a> in the 2015 edition of <em>the jonestown report<\/em>, was published in November 2015, and subsequently reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210306181206\/https:\/\/www.laprogressive.com\/sikivu-hutchinson\/\">LA Progressive<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefeministwire.com\/2016\/06\/review-white-nights-black-paradise\/\">Feminist Newswire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160314074659\/http:\/\/www.curvemag.com\/Curve-Bloggers\/Rev-Monroe\/March-2016\/A-Religious-Utopia-Turned-Nightmare-1024\/\">Curve Magazine<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prunderground.com\/white-nights-black-paradise-first-african-american-novel-to-explore-jonestown-massacre\/0065158\/\">PR Underground<\/a>. Dr. Hutchinson also discussed her book in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scpr.org\/programs\/offramp\/2016\/01\/08\/45854\/listening-to-the-voices-silenced-by-the-jonestown\/\">an interview<\/a> on the \u201cOff-Ramp\u201d program on KPCC Public Radio in Southern California, and in an interview in <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170712075852\/http:\/\/religiondispatches.org\/the-peoples-temple-the-black-church-and-the-tragic-legacy-of-jonestown\/\">Religion Dispatches<\/a>. She also wrote a blog on the 2015 anniversary for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/sikivu-hutchinson\/on-the-anniversary-of-the_4_b_8591220.html\">The Huffington Post<\/a>. An article that uses her work as a point of departure into a discussion of other groups appears in a November 2015 article in The Atlantic Magazine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151121174121\/http:\/\/www.citylab.com\/politics\/2015\/11\/the-jonestown-reminder-that-there-is-no-racial-utopia\/416628\/\">City Lab<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a name=\"tv\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal21\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 26.5pt; color: red; background-color: #f8f3e9;\">Jonestown in Film<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Actor Jake Gyllenhaal announced in early January that he was launching an anthology series which would focus on different \u201ccults\u201d and their leaders, with the first season profiling Jim Jones before moving on to Charles Manson and others. Stories about the announcement included coverage by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/jake-gyllenhaal-explore-jonestown-cult-852449\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/tv\/news\/jake-gyllenhaal-anthology-series-for-ae-1201673357\/\">Variety<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comingsoon.net\/tv\/news\/644981-ae-partners-with-jake-gyllenhaal-to-develop-anthology-series\">Coming Soon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 In September, HBO unveiled plans to present a limited series based upon the book <em>Raven<\/em>, the most popularly accessible history of Peoples Temple and Jim Jones. Written by Tim Reiterman and John Jacobs, the book was published in 1981, and paperback edition with a new forward was published in 2008 about the time of the 30th anniversary. The announcement revealed that the series would reunite Vince Gilligan and Michelle MacLaren, two alumnae of <em>Breaking Bad<\/em>, as executive producers, but did not include any anticipated airing date.<\/p>\n<p>The story was reported on multiple websites, including <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2016\/09\/vince-gilligan-hbo-limited-series-cult-leader-jim-jones-octavia-spencer-1201816148\/\">Deadline Hollywood<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/jonestown-drama-vince-gilligan-octavia-927002\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/consequenceofsound.net\/2016\/09\/breaking-bad-creator-vince-gilligan-to-helm-new-hbo-series-about-cult-leader-jim-jones\/\">Consequence of Sound<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinemablend.com\/television\/1554740\/breaking-bads-creator-has-a-new-TV-show-coming-and-it-sounds-pretty-dark\">CinemaBlend<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2016\/09\/jonestown-hbo-breaking-bad\">Vanity Fair<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a name=\"games\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal21\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 26.5pt; color: red; background-color: #f8f3e9;\">Jonestown in Games<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Two video game production studios announced plans in 2016 to market games incorporating elements of the Jonestown tragedy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/churchbanner-color.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-67831\" src=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/churchbanner-color.jpg\" alt=\"churchbanner-color\" width=\"475\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a>\u2022 Earlier this year, there was a flurry of publicity about a new video game, still in development and set for release in 2017, that, according to the publicity surrounding it, puts the player in the position of a man trying to rescue his nephew from \u201ca commune or cult in South America called the Collective Justice Mission\u201d similar to Peoples Temple and Jonestown. The game itself \u2013 <em>The <\/em><em>Church in the Darkness<\/em> \u2013 is described by its production company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paranoidproductions.com\/church\/index.html\">here<\/a>. Various descriptions and reviews of the game include those at <a href=\"https:\/\/killscreen.com\/articles\/videogame-to-explore-the-possible-causes-of-the-jonestown-massacre\/\">Killscreen<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamezone.com\/news\/the-church-in-the-darkness-will-explore-the-jonestown-disaster-on-ps4-3434242\">GameZone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160625025325\/http:\/\/www.trueachievements.com\/n22925\/the-church-in-the-darkness-bringing-religious-fanaticism-to-xbox.htm\">True Achievements<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techtimes.com\/articles\/136875\/20160226\/go-inside-a-cult-in-teaser-trailer-for-the-church-in-the-darkness.htm\">TechTimes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/kotaku.com\/https-www-youtube-com-watch-v-fyizczaveos-inspired-by-1761471467\">Kotaku<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/12069-indie-game-the-church-in-the-darkness-will-take-on-the-jonestown-massacre\">Inverse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A second game \u2013 which received less publicity \u2013 is known as both Outlast II and Outcast II.
