Douglas Ellice:<\/strong> Sir, a very<\/em> strange message\u2013 uh, seemingly some sort of encryption. Hold on a second. [covers mouthpiece, pauses] I\u2019ll call you right back, sir.<\/p>\n

(Phone being dialed and rings)<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Yup.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Sir, have you got a pencil and paper? [Pause]<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Yeah.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> I should read this to you, but I don\u2019t know what it means. And if there\u2019s any more, I\u2019ll just drop the phone and try to get it, if you don\u2019t mind. Uh\u2013 Three people were asked to receive this and no one else. And when they were assembled, it was, \u201cA lot of people have seen\u2013\u201d
\nBurke:<\/strong> Pardon?<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> \u201cA lot of people have seen Mr. Fraser. [pause] I think Mrs. Brownfield has offered to help.\u201d [Editor’s note: Temple Radio Codebook<\/a> translates these two phrases to mean, “People have died,” and “Do whatever you can to even the score”] <\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> \u201cA lot of people have seen Mr. Fraser. I think Mrs.\u2013\u201d<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> [interrupting] Excuse me, sir.<\/p>\n

[Shortwave radio in background, largely unintelligible]<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Mrs. Gilliam [phonetic], they\u2019re talking about. Just a second.<\/p>\n

Shortwave:<\/strong> (female speaker) Um, we do, we do, we do. [pause] But, uh\u2013 we, we\u2019re, we\u2019re trying\u2013 [unintelligible]<\/p>\n

[long pause, extraneous talking in room]<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Sir, [unintelligible] seems to be more to this. Maybe I better call you in another minute or two.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> If you don\u2019t mind.<\/p>\n

Female:<\/strong> Hello?<\/p>\n

Unknown male 1:<\/strong> Hello, is Doug there?<\/p>\n

Female:<\/strong> Yes, just a minute sir.<\/p>\n

Unknown male 1:<\/strong> Our latest information is that, uh\u2013 the uh, they still are on the ground up there.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Okay, good. Thanks a lot. Try to keep me posted. There may be trouble up there.<\/p>\n

Unknown male 1:<\/strong> Okay. Talk to you later.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> There may be some sort of problem up there.<\/p>\n

[Phone hangs up. Phone being dialed and rings)<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> I\u2019ll try again. Uh, \u201cA lot of people have seen Mr. Fraser.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Yeah.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> \u201cI think Mrs. Brownfield has offered to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> [repeating back] \u2013Brownfield has offered to help.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> \u201cShe\u2019s three\u201d\u2013 or perhaps it was, \u201cfree.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Three or free.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Right. \u201cGet SB\u2013 \u201d or perhaps it was, \u201cFB\u2013 to help and get all the other folks.\u201d And then there was something about, \u201cHey, I\u2019ve got an idea, how about Mrs. Gilliam?\u201d And they said, \u201cYeah, get her too.\u201d It\u2013 It\u2019s some obvious sort of code and it sounds\u2013 sounds very, very strange. Uh\u2013 just wh\u2013 when these people were standing by to receive this message, they were told to clear the radio room and uh, only have certain personnel there. They called up and said, \u201cYeah, we heard\u2013 GDF at Ogle has heard something about a problem at Port Kaituma.\u201d So maybe something going on up there.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Hmm.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> SB could be a \u201cSpecial Branch\u201d. Mrs. Gilliam could be GDF. I don\u2019t know, may- But\u2013 I\u2013 it\u2019s an obvious encryption. I\u2019m not reading something into it, \u2018cause they\u2019ve been talking in the clear all day.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Yeah, yeah.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> This means something.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> But it seems to be calling for action on this<\/em> end, because it was upstairs that was calling, and they asked for certain parties here to copy the message and no one else so\u2013<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Yeah. Yeah.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Maybe they\u2019re planning something for the airport.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Yeah. Okay, nothing, uh\u2013 I\u2013<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> We still don\u2019t know who\u2019s coming out<\/em> though.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Well I tried to get, uh\u2013 I tried to get Peter Londono [phonetic] but, uh, that number you gave me at GAC, and he wasn\u2019t there. Uh\u2013<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> He just called me, and said he doesn\u2019t know anything except that the plane is still on the ground at Port Kaituma.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Oh, it\u2019s still on the ground<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Yes. And I\u2019m not sure how\u2013<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> What he told me is he didn\u2019t have an ETA or anything.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Well, they may be having some sort of a hassle out there at the airstrip.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Yeah. Okay.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> I\u2019ll continue\u2013<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Yeah.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> \u2013transcribing this\u2013<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Well, if Peter calls again, ask him to call me, hmm?<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Okay, I told him to attempt to verify whether or not the plane was in the air and to let me know, but I\u2019ll tell him to call you when he calls me.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> [speaks over Ellice] Yeah, well, have\u2013 have him call me.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Will do, sir.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> Uh, Doug Ellice, please.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Yeah. This is he.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> This is Dennis Reece.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Hi, Dennis.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> I heard a cryptic message on the radio that sounded like it was for me, I\u2019m not sure. But anyway, I called Sharon Amos, and uh, they\u2019ve had no contact with Jonestown.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Okay. Good. Thank you very much.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> All right. You wanna call me back about the other thing [unintelligible]<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Right\u2013 uh\u2013 Peter thinks the planes may still be on the ground at Kaituma.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> Oh, really?<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Yeah. I\u2019ll uh\u2013 I\u2019ll keep you posted as I find out what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> Okay.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> You might call Sharon periodically and ask her to call up and see whether or not the planes have left.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> Yeah.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> \u2018Cause if they would know inside whether or not the planes had taken off. Why don\u2019t you ask her that?<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> No, they haven\u2019t had any contact.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Well, ask her to try to contact them and see whether or not the planes have left on schedule.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> You mean contact Sharon\u2013<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Hmm\u2013<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Yeah, or\u2013 or wait ten minutes and bug her again. But uh, I wanna know\u2013 I\u2019d like her to call Jonestown and find out what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> Yeah, she\u2019s trying<\/em> to but [unintelligible string] generator problem or something, they haven\u2019t been able to get radio contact with them. [Pause]<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Yeah, except that\u2019s not true.<\/p>\n

Reese:<\/strong> Oh, it isn\u2019t?<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> I know. There\u2019s a possibility they\u2019re all still on the ground up there.<\/p>\n

Hartmann:<\/strong> Why?<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know. That\u2019s what I\u2019d love to find out. Is there any radio contact from [unintelligible name] here to their own plane?<\/p>\n

Hartmann:<\/strong> I\u2019m just telling you what I heard.<\/p>\n

Joe Hartmann called Ogle, and he heard something about the planes haven\u2019t taken off yet because of gunshots. There\u2019s a lot of cryptic traffic going back and forth about uh, having the\u2013 having somebody\u2019s children \u201cgo meet Mr. Fraser\u201d and \u201cthe children don\u2019t have any vehicles to go do it\u201d and \u201cHave you contacted Mr. Brownfield yet?\u201d Wait a minute. [Pause] Something now about Mr. Fraser. Are\u2013 are you\u2013 Is your radio on?<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> I can\u2019t pick it up. There\u2019s too much static.<\/p>\n

Shortwave 1:<\/strong> [unintelligible] (female speaker) well\u2013 they\u2019re working on it\u2013<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> They\u2019re working on it.<\/p>\n

Shortwave 2<\/strong>: (different speaker, but hard to tell which radio female is in Georgetown and which is in Jonestown) Oh, I see\u2013 I see. I thought you were\u2013 said [unintelligible string]<\/p>\n

Shortwave 1:<\/strong> Well, they\u2019re on their way to see him.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> They\u2019re on their way to see Mr. Fraser. Sounds like they\u2019ve got people going down to the airstrip. Uh, I don\u2019t know that we\u2019re ever going to figure out\u2013<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Well, yes. What airstrip are we talking about?<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Kaituma. Uh, I don\u2019t know that listening to this, we\u2019re\u2013 we\u2019ll ever figure out what they\u2019re talking about, but there\u2019s trouble up there.<\/p>\n

Burke:<\/strong> Well, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s gonna really help us very much, Doug, one way or the other. Uh\u2013 [unintelligible words] monitoring if there\u2019s anything from it. Uh, I think the thing to do is to just keep pressing GAC and, uh, the other people for an ETA.<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Okay, fine\u2013 uh\u2013<\/p>\n

Shortwave 2:<\/strong> Brownfield! Brownfield!<\/p>\n

Ellice:<\/strong> Okay, fine uh, well, I\u2019ll call the airport again.<\/p>\n
