In order for Peoples Temple to establish an agricultural mission in Guyana, it had to incorporate itself within the South American country, so that it could enter into legal contracts \u2013 to open bank accounts, to buy and lease property and equipment, to hire Guyanese workers for some of the initial construction in Jonestown \u2013 and give substance to the plans the organization had made with Guyana\u2019s political leaders. On 25 February 1976, the Guyana Commissioner of Lands and Surveys, and Paula Adams of Peoples Temple, signed a land lease granting the use of 3852 acres in the Northwest Region of Guyana to the Temple\u2019s agricultural community.\u00a0 Available at http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=13131<\/a><\/p>\n

Tape 988 (Transcript at http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=27639<\/a>): In a recording from December 1977, Jim Jones talks about Cuba or the Soviet Union as an alternative to Guyana or whether they should all die. The conversation includes Jones\u2019 reported affirmations by Guyana officials.<\/p>\n

In a memo entitled \u201cTo Whom It May Concern<\/a>\u201d written about the same time, Carolyn Layton outlines how far the Jonestown community was prepared to go to in preventing its residents from being forced back to the United States against \u201cthe collective will,\u201d and how it depends upon the Guyana government for support. Paula Adams, the Temple\u2019s most constant presence in Georgetown, had a longtime relationship with Guyana\u2019s Ambassador to the United States, Laurence \u201cBonny\u201d Mann that survived the deaths in Jonestown. She recorded many of her conversations with the ambassador, conversations which included many references to a cross-section of Guyana officialdom and Temple leadership.
