{"id":78266,"date":"2018-02-09T16:07:53","date_gmt":"2018-02-10T00:07:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=78266"},"modified":"2023-11-15T09:46:08","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T17:46:08","slug":"did-people-have-bibles-in-jonestown","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=78266","title":{"rendered":"Did people have Bibles in Jonestown?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is known that people were discouraged from packing Bibles among their personal effects to bring to Jonestown, but it is also known that the leadership didn\u2019t necessarily confiscate every Bible that came to its attention, especially \u2013 as the issue was raised during a meeting one night \u2013 if its owner was an elderly black lady who wasn\u2019t otherwise in the habit of defying Jones.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Bibles did exist in Jonestown. <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=69387\">A report by the Government of Guyana<\/a> issued in March 1979 that inventoried \u201call types and categories of physical assets at the Jonestown Settlement at the time of the tragedy\u201d included <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/GOG-Appendix-K.pdf\">an appendix listing the books recovered at the site<\/a> that identified 15 Bibles among the 7000 volumes recovered (Entry 1238). At the same time, the records from the <a href=\"http:\/\/jonestown.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=34227\">Jonestown library<\/a> itself include no Bibles, which suggests that the recovered Bibles were owned by individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Jones made occasional references to the Bible \u2013 most often during the course of a newscast \u2013 as the book that was used to enslave the forebears of most of his followers.
