Lane informed Sgt. [Name deleted] and Assistant Chief of Police Holt that he plans to initiate legal action against the MPD and other unnamed law enforcement agencies because a reporter with Esquire Magazine has been informed that Kool-Aid packages found on his door in November, 1978, were placed on the door by Lane. He was informed that this was not generally accepted procedure by the MPD. Lane became angry, left the office of the Homicide Bureau, and indicated he was going to the Internal Affairs Bureau of the MPD to file a complaint.

For information of Bureau and San Francisco, Mark Lane has reported he received what he felt was a threat to his life because of the recent ritual mass suicide of more than 900 people in Jonestown, Guyana. Lane found four packages of Kool-Aid in a plastic bag in the door of his residence early on Nov. 25, 1978. The matter was investigated by officers of the MPD; however, according to Sgt. [Name deleted], no suspects have been developed in connection with this incident.

Memphis will follow and furnish Bureau and San Francisco any additional pertinent information regarding Lane’s activities.

BT

0 122100Z JAN 79 FM MEMPHIS (89-110) (P) TO DIRECTOR (89-4286) PRIORITY SAN FRANCISCO (89-250) PRIORITY BT UNCLAS EFTO RYMUR On Jan. 12, 1979, Sgt.
