Composting, 30 July 1977<\/strong><\/p>\n

The soil did not swaddle;
\nwould not entertain
\nin careless adoration<\/p>\n

demands we made of it:
\nstripping, caressing, coaxing.
\nUntil we learned how to cow.<\/p>\n

Held the press of our weight
\ntighter than promises.
\nSo we saturated it
\nwith accelerants like wonder
\n& hunger.\u00a0 Warmed it with
\nour hopeful & certain bodies.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Bookish Girl Sweeps <\/strong>t<\/strong>he Sanctuary<\/strong><\/p>\n

In The Acts: All that believed
\nwere together & had all things
\nin common.\u00a0 In my bag, apples
\nthe size of my fist bump & bruise.<\/p>\n

I chase dry my petition for a sober
\nwhose blooming does not chafe,
\nPrell that convinces boys & bounce.
\nBay my selfish prattle with chore.<\/p>\n

Coax from the broom\u2019s hiss a rhythmic
\nflagellation: there| arehard| erplaces| tobe.<\/p>\n

The Cause,\u00a0<\/strong>28 December 197<\/strong>7<\/strong><\/p>\n

We step bravely into the fasting.
\nSalty skinned and doe-eyed;
\nmore got than give. The wild,
\nferrous & mossy, thickens
\nour hair, intoxicates us holy.<\/p>\n

You might crave God\u2019s good Earth
\nwhen it\u2019s not the bowl of your back
\nturned on its face, empty. Might be
\nsincere in your giddy abstinence ripe
\nwith the way God makes.\u00a0 Except the one<\/p>\n

he doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 I draw a circle in his palm;
\nbullseye it with my pointer: We are Here.
\nThen slurp. He only jerks away to be coy.
\nHe\u2019s intoxicated by the smell of my hair
\ndusting his calluses in its own drizzle of kisses.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
