“Tom Grubbs was a great teacher, good with children, always working to find better ways to facilitate learning according to the needs of the students. He went to the Board of Education in WIllits to get permission to have his dog in class with him to help reach students. He was always planning news things and spoke his mind. He spoke of his childhood when his family foraged fields for food in hard times. Thank you Tom! ” - Don Beck

“Tom Grubbs, Thank you for taking me into your home and treating me as your daughter. As a teenager I could not process all the racism you experienced for having a black foster daughter. I heard the stories often as we were all sitting at dinner. At the time I just remember being angry and wanting to be accepted like Kelly. I DID NOT WANT TO HEAR HOW YOU WERE BEING PERSECUTED ON THE JOB FOR HAVING A BLACK CHILD. LOOKING BACK I THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING AN UNSUNG HERO, AND FIGHT AGAINST RACISM. MOREOVER, THANK YOU FOR TAKING THIS WAYWARD CHILD IN YOUR HOME. YOU WERE THE ONLY ONE WHO TOOK THE TIME TO BE A REAL FATHER FIGURE TO ME. REST IN PARADISE YOU GREAT MAN. YOU WILL FOREVER BE A PART OF ME. THANK YOU POPS. LOVE MISSY (SHIRLETHA) ” - Shirletha Holmes-Boxx
