This is the archive of the Jonestown Legacy website, launched in 2007 by former Peoples Temple associate pastor David Wise as part of his research into a never-completed book of the same name. Rev. Wise was one of several pastors of the Temple’s Los Angeles church until his defection in 1976, a year before many of the church’s congregants migrated to Guyana and two years before their deaths in Jonestown. The FBI made several attempts to interview him in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, but he remained underground – hiding from both Temple loyalists and law enforcement – for nearly 25 years, until the year 2000.

This site includes a number of articles related to Rev. Wise’s experiences in the Temple, his perspectives on other modern-day cults – primarily corporate and governmental – as well as his activism on the Free Energy Party, a political entity “with a platform for Free Source Energy, Cures for Diseases and Organic Permaculture.”

In the interest of preserving the information from the Jonestown Legacy site for future generations of Jonestown scholars and researchers, the managers of this site obtained permission from Rev. Wise to archive this work in its entirety.
