Information Concerning this Archived Site

Source: https://jonestownsurvivor.com (Inactive)

This is the archive of a large website of articles and blogs published in conjunction with the book, Jonestown Survivor: An Insider’s Look. The book and all the material in this archive were written by Laura Johnston Kohl, a member of Peoples Temple who survived the tragedy in Jonestown by being in Guyana’s capital city of Georgetown on 18 November 1978.

Following the twentieth anniversary of the Jonestown tragedy, Ms. Johnston Kohl became a prolific writer and active public speaker, work she continued to do until shortly before her death on 19 November 2019. She also made herself available to family members of those who perished in Guyana and scholars who try to understand the calamity of the ending. Finally, she was a generous contributor of articles and remembrances for the Alternative Considerations site, all of which may be found here.

In the interest of preserving the information from her site for future generations of Jonestown scholars and researchers, the managers of this site obtained permission from Laura’s husband Ron Kohl to archive her work in its entirety. Both the archive and the book itself are published with his permission.

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Contacted by Vietnamese student from Florida for a Research Project

In the last week, I was contacted by a Vietnamese student living in Florida for some first-hand information for a research project she and her friends were completing on Peoples Temple. Here are her questions and my answers: - How would you describe Jim Jones as a leader? Jim had two sides to him - on his personal side, he had mistresses and secretaries who really did anything he asked up to and including getting him drugs for his addiction in Jonestown. With these most intimate followers, he insisted that they remain single and in direct contact with him, and they led ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Contacted by Swedish Students

Each week, I get at least one email with questions. One of the emails that I got this week was from Swedish students. This was their question: What are the basic forms of expressions, belief and ideas of The Peoples Temple? (How does a member of Peoples Temple express their faith, any special clothing, special behaviour, rituals? etc.) Really, your question has to be answered in two parts – the USA, and Jonestown The basic beliefs of Peoples Temple were that everyone is equal, and should be treated with dignity. No one should be hungry, or should be living in dangerous circumstances, ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Upcoming Events

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Events:      I have been on a number of internet and national radio programs lately - one a month for the past six months. Those have been interesting. Very interesting.      This week, I am speaking at Cal State San Marcos to the History Honors Club, at San Diego State University in the Jonestown Exhibit Special Collections, and am traveling to New York to be interviewed on the Ben Modo television show. In March, I will go to Hawaii ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR and Revisiting Jonestown

Hello everyone,      I wanted to give you an update about our plans to return to Guyana and Jonestown.  I spent time researching the type of grant that would allow us to go back to Guyana and Jonestown, and to record our individual perspectives and reflections. Most of the available grants that I found do not provide for the "R&D" portion - meaning the travel and equipment, in our case. The grants available for that somewhat-smaller project are also smaller.      My initial plan was to get a grant that would pay for our transportation and expenses in Guyana, our ...
