Information Concerning this Archived Site

Source: https://jonestownsurvivor.com (Inactive)

This is the archive of a large website of articles and blogs published in conjunction with the book, Jonestown Survivor: An Insider’s Look. The book and all the material in this archive were written by Laura Johnston Kohl, a member of Peoples Temple who survived the tragedy in Jonestown by being in Guyana’s capital city of Georgetown on 18 November 1978.

Following the twentieth anniversary of the Jonestown tragedy, Ms. Johnston Kohl became a prolific writer and active public speaker, work she continued to do until shortly before her death on 19 November 2019. She also made herself available to family members of those who perished in Guyana and scholars who try to understand the calamity of the ending. Finally, she was a generous contributor of articles and remembrances for the Alternative Considerations site, all of which may be found here.

In the interest of preserving the information from her site for future generations of Jonestown scholars and researchers, the managers of this site obtained permission from Laura’s husband Ron Kohl to archive her work in its entirety. Both the archive and the book itself are published with his permission.

THE MORPHING OF PEOPLES TEMPLE SURVIVORS

THE MORPHING OF PEOPLES TEMPLE SURVIVORS As always when I write, I represent only my own opinion about things I see and reflect on. Some of what I say may not match your perspective – as fellow survivors or close friends. We survivors and family members just held the 35th anniversary gatherings of the calamity of Jonestown. Each year, the actual dynamics of the events on the anniversary vary widely, depending on who shows up to our community dinner and to the cemetery. The tone of the gathering really depends on those who are in the room ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR SEES A BLURRED LINE

I am a teacher, so much of the year, I am preparing future lessons, correcting work from past lessons, or just consumed by the experience. I've had about ten days off from that, while waiting to teach summer school in a few days. I have been immersed in Peoples Temple. We have a private "survivors only" Peoples Temple facebook page, and the memories of the details of the last days of Peoples Temple are harrowing. Along with following these conversations, and adding a person's name here and there, I'm also setting up my own book talks ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR on Leadership

Transition of Leadership in Peoples Temple, the Branch Davidians, and Synanon by Laura Johnston Kohl I presented this paper to the Communal Studies Association Conference in Old Economy, Butler County, PA, on October 4, 2013. There are regulations and procedures for transitions of leadership in businesses, the military, politics, and mainstream churches. They existed as well – if in separate and distinctive ways – in three groups which are the subject of this paper. The “Transition of Leadership” in Peoples Temple, the Branch Davidians, and Synanon each developed uniquely. Jim Jones was the first leader of his own church, and – from ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR goes to Jury Duty

This week, this last week of September, I finished up jury duty for the San Diego Superior Court. It was really fascinating. It made me feel proud being part of this legal process. Last week, on Thursday, I was invited to appear at Jury Duty in downtown San Diego. I live about an hour away, during rush hour. I had the choice of appearing at a closer venue, in Vista, but opted for the express bus and downtown. After all, I am NEVER selected. For the past twenty years, I have been repeatedly asked to show up for Jury Duty, but ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR NOTES PEOPLES TEMPLE LEGACY

A FURTHER LEGACY OF PEOPLES TEMPLE The 35th anniversary of the deaths in Guyana is this November 18, 2013. Many of us continue to be haunted by that day. We survivors have each found our own way to memorialize the event, and certainly those lives lost. My own way, for these last fifteen years, is to discuss it and reflect on it. Sometimes, I speak publicly about my involvement in Peoples Temple. Sometimes, I do it with fellow survivors, sometimes I do it with chosen friends. Since I first was able to raise my head ...
