Information Concerning this Archived Site

Source: https://jonestownsurvivor.com (Inactive)

This is the archive of a large website of articles and blogs published in conjunction with the book, Jonestown Survivor: An Insider’s Look. The book and all the material in this archive were written by Laura Johnston Kohl, a member of Peoples Temple who survived the tragedy in Jonestown by being in Guyana’s capital city of Georgetown on 18 November 1978.

Following the twentieth anniversary of the Jonestown tragedy, Ms. Johnston Kohl became a prolific writer and active public speaker, work she continued to do until shortly before her death on 19 November 2019. She also made herself available to family members of those who perished in Guyana and scholars who try to understand the calamity of the ending. Finally, she was a generous contributor of articles and remembrances for the Alternative Considerations site, all of which may be found here.

In the interest of preserving the information from her site for future generations of Jonestown scholars and researchers, the managers of this site obtained permission from Laura’s husband Ron Kohl to archive her work in its entirety. Both the archive and the book itself are published with his permission.

I am delighted to be one of eight survivors and friends involved in an Oral History Project. Five of us are Jonestown survivors - John Cobb, Jordan Vilchez, Leslie Wagner-Wilson, Versie Perkins, and me. Two more lost much loved family members in Jonestown - Vera Washington and Teresa Cobb. And, we have an additional friend, a psychologist, Dr. Gary Maynard, working with us. I have started my contacts and I am really delighted to give voice to people who have not yet shared their own stories. I have expressed many times in the past thirty-five ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Visits Mexico City for Presentation

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR at Casa de los Amigos in Mexico City I was a guest of Casa de los Amigos in Mexico City for three days in June, 2013. For me, a requirement for any “adventure” is to experience something outside of my personal comfort zone. The trip I took with my husband, leaving from San Diego, entailed many advertures. We flew on Volaris Airlines, out of Tijuana for the first time. Our son Raul dropped us at the border first thing in the morning. We walked across the border and took a taxi out to the airport. ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR ON THE MOVE

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR will be traveling to exciting places these next six months. I'll be spending time in San Diego - at libraries, historical societies, and local universities and colleges. But, I'll also fly off to the East Coast and visit Pennsylvania for a Communal Studies Conference, and visit York University. My biggest trip will be to Mexico City to present my Spiritual Journey. The two other things are in the works. A Peoples Temple Oral History Project is starting, which will likely consume the rest of my summer, and will be an ongoing effort. ...

JONESTOWN SURVIVOR Responses to Family Inquiries

I always have at least three family members or friends of survivors or of those who died in Jonestown who correspond with me and ask questions about Peoples Temple, life in Jonestown, and their loved one. Recently, I responded with one who lost her sister, and her sister's family. Each survivor you speak with will have different points of view on most of the things in Jonestown - except we universally hate what Jim ultimately did. I don't like to get into in-depth discussion on email - it is too frustrating. But, here are my thoughts ...
