My name is Heather Shearer, and I’m a professor at Montana Tech in Butte, MT. I will be attending the memorial service on May 29th, 2011.
This memorial is a much-needed tribute to a group of people who have been maligned in U.S. culture — especially the popular media — since 1978. I have no personal connection to the people who died in Jonestown, but I do have a strong desire to see an alternative narrative — one in which the members of that community are given the respect that they deserve. This memorial, created by people with strong connections to Peoples Temple members and supported by many others, is an essential part of making that alternative narrative known to the U.S. public at large.
