Listen to MP3 (Pt. 1, Pt. 2).
Harmonica plays. Tape edit. (Pause)
Jones: –an enormous painful and agonizing sound and so I would suggest that we find out what is the problem with our system or any supplemental problems thereof and get it reconciled, because it is a beautiful choral number and I was appreciative of the fact that the sister went on uninterruptedly and it was certainly touching.
Tape edit
Jones: On Wednesday night we discussed two and a half hours of essential teachings. I cannot repeat it tonight. We thought we would give you a taste of it, but I’m much of the opinion that we hardly listen to anything that’s presented in the first person, so it’s little likelihood we’re gonna listen to anything that’s recorded, but if you don’t listen, you’re going to find yourself lost. (Pause) I have the key to life. I have the key to indestructibility.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: I have the (unintelligible word) of salvation. You might say I’m the locksmith that could open up these doors that have been locked and screwed up by the– the devious system that we’re in today, by the spiritual wickedness in high places. I have the only way you can get in. There’s no way around it, there’s no way above this door, there’s no way under it. You’re gonna have to come through it, if you want to be saved.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: That’s why I’m anxious for you, not anxious that you hear my voice. I’m anxious that you hear the truth which my voice brings. I would that I can give you the voice of some melodious starlet or star or someone that is in the media, but all those souls are sold out, so I have to give you whatever I have to offer, and you must get the truth while you can, because it’s not very plentiful. There’s a famine. (More deliberate) I mean there is a famine. He said in the last days there would be a famine, not only for food, but there’s a famine for the hearing of the Word. Now if the Bible was the Word of God, there certainly wouldn’t be a famine because it’s the best-selling text in the nation today. It’s promoted by Rockefeller and Carnegie so that people will read the book, so it must not be the Word, because it said there’s a famine for the hearing of the Word, but the Bible is preached up and down America today, and up and down America tonight. On every radio wave, you’ll hear the gospel going forth, so-called. (Ministerial voice) But it said in the last days there will be a famine for the hearing, so the Word must not be going to come out of these churches (Amos 8:11, “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:”). The Word must not be going to come out of these religious programs, the Word therefore must not going to be proceeding out of the institutional Bible, but (calms) it’s going to have to come from a living epistle which is read and known of all men (2 Corinthians 3:2-4).
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Man cannot, must not, and will not live by bread alone, by tablets of stone or written scripture. He must live by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:3-4, “And when the tempter came to [Jesus], he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”) You’ve got a mouth? You use yours, ‘cause God’s got one and he’s using his.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: (Conversational) Now we’ve discussed uh, the– the fact of all these high uh– these high uh, incidences of crime. The nation is in turmoil. The whole fabric of the nation is being shaken. The president [Richard Nixon] has announced that if the Supreme Court does not define a decision on Watergate tapes to suit him, he will not accept it. That’s why the Senator [Edward] Kennedy from Massachusetts said today and Senator [Edward] Brooke who’s a Republican said that if indeed that is the case, then Mr. Nixon – if he gets by not answering what the Supreme Court demands – he has had– he has achieved a bloodless coup. He has achieved what has taken at least tanks and our airplanes in Chile to do yesterday. That’s on your paper today. Mr. Kennedy said if he gets by with this, and his own Republican colleagues, our only black senator, Senator Brooke says, if he gets by with this, then he is a town– he has tantamount to a military takeover without any guns being fired, without any blood being shed. Now it is a really shameful condition in America that a person can bring on a dictatorship without any blood being shed. At least the Chileans tonight are fighting for their freedom. They’ve had to be squashed, they’ve had to be murdered. The president [Salvador Allende] had to be murdered. His bra– his brains were shot out by machine gun and his own– his wife [Hortensia Bussi] couldn’t even– wasn’t even given the privilege of seeing her beloved, before she had been uh, (unintelligible word) just into sanctuary in the Mexican embassy and is now on– enroute to Mexico for political asylum. At least the Chileans fought. At least there was some bloodshed. But I know one nation in this country– in this world today where there would be very little fighting done, if any. I know a nation – and I’m in it right now – it’s called America. I’m in a nation called the United States of America that would not fight to protect its liberty. That’s how far gone the people are. They would not fight to protect their liberty. The light has nearly gone out and the people care very little. (Voice rises) The prophets lie, the leaders lie, and the people would almost have it so.
Congregation: Scattered applause.
Jones: At least the Indians in Wounded Knee fought. They fought till many of their children even died. But we who pride ourselves in being great Americans, we’ve lost that– that zeal, that inspiration, that struggle for freedom. And as it was said by the founders of our country, eternal viligance– eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. If you don’t fight for it, you lose it. You gotta fight all the time, you gotta be eternally vigilant, and the moment you stop fighting, that moment you lose liberty. Well, America has lost its fighting spirit. We’re caught up in the boob tube, we’re caught up in modern conveniences, we’re not eating properly, we’re caught up with the uh, cost of living, the index, and the market, and we are consequently ripe for a takeover. Now a country’s not going to allow crime to continue at this rate. The dictatorial powers are back in the background this very moment stirring up this kind of situation. They’re stirring up and fomenting crime, just like they use some of the bl– the very elements of our own community to burn down our church. This was a conspiracy, and they got Uncle Toms to carry it out. Aunt Janes and Uncle Toms carried it out. Not honkeys, but Uncle Toms and Aunt Janes.
Congregation: Scattered Applause.
Jones: There was no honkey came over here and burned that place down. No, they were– they had the skin like all people that should be free have the color of their skin, tan and ebony. They were people that should know better, but we’ve got agents and counter-agents and sinister forces of the– (Pause) the hidden rulers, the CIA right in our very midst. So what’re you going to say, what if some– what’s going to happen. (More deliberate) What is going to happen? (Pause) That’s good. At least you qu– quieted down. I told you what was going to happen in Chile. I informed you exactly what would take place in Chile.
Voices in Congregation: That’s right.
Jones: I said it would not work, what he’s trying to do, socialism in a demo– democracy where there’s a strong military, it will not work. I said he will be brought down in a great tragedy. They’ll bring– they’ll overthrow his government. I said they would do it, and I prophesied the death of it, and now Allende the president is dead, and Chile is in bloodshed. With the exception of a few people that are still fighting in the suburbs – the poor there tend to live in the suburbs – and there’s still some resistance in the suburbs. All resistance is almost gone. The paper said that uh, we’re not responsible. San Francisco Chronicle says we’re not responsible for it. Our government is not responsible for the fall of Chile. Yet in the next line, it says that every form of aid had been cut off to Chile by the United States except military aid. The only aid we were giving our tax dollars, when we can’t hardly keep ourselves together and the American home is almost overwhelmed now, you can’t even afford good medicine, you can’t afford good hospitals, you can’t afford a good doctor, and yet our tax money is going down to these crooked generals that just overthrew an elected government. An elected president was just overthrown by generals that got their money from Washington. (Pause) Don’t take my word for it. Read your paper.
Congregation: Scattered applause.
Jones: Peace. The paper said we are not involved, but I don’t know how less involved you can be– or how more involved you can be, rather. If our money is– all of our money that’s going out of the United States has been going to buy them arms and tanks and airplanes, if the UPI and the AP, the Associated Press looked up and said, it’s American planes strafing and shooting the government palace, and the American planes that finally brought about the death of a thousand people there. I heard the description over all the networks. They described this Saber jet, this type of plane and that type of plane. They were all American. So if we furnish the planes and say we had no direct involvement, I don’t care whether we got any direct involvement, that doesn’t– just because Mr. Nixon wasn’t there uh, dropping the bombs. All the paper said was that we didn’t have any direct involvement. But we’ve got a lot of indirect involvement. The indirect involvement was that we were notified ten days ago the– the exact day the revolution was going to take place, the exact day the military coup. I don’t want to call it a revolution. I want to call it a takeover. A fascist vicious takeover, and your papers now read today that ten days ago, our government was informed by the generals when they were going to do it. The exact hour. Now– Then we say we’re not involved? Now if I know somebody’s robbing your house. and I don’t do something. I’m involved.
Voices in Congregation: That’s right. That’s right.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: I believe that– I believe that if– the lawyers over here could correct me if I’m wrong, the lawyer there that I healed of cancer, when he was dying, standing on the wall [Eugene Chaikin]. I believe that if you have information to a crime and you don’t report that, if you’re aware of the exact time that a crime’s gone take place and you don’t report that, you’re involved in that conspiracy in one way or another. You– I wouldn’t want to give the exact technical description, but in the courts of law, you would be involved, you would be a– considered a criminal if you kept information privy to your own self, and did not reveal it when you knew that a crime was going to take place. (Pause) You’d be an accessory before the facts of the crime. Now we’re an accessory to the tragedy of Chile. And they’re only moonlighting out there, babies, my belo– my beloved children, they’re only moonlighting out there what they’re getting ready to do here. They’ve tried us on for size in the Philippines, and they’ve taken away their liberty. They tried us on for size in the Dominican Republic, and they’ve taken away their lib– their liberty. They’ve tried us on throughout all the nations. They’ve been putting this thing on, and in Indonesia three or four years ago, they’ve put it on there. They wanted to see if America would resist there. We have let them take away people’s freedom, from Greece with our money, all throughout Latin America, all throughout Africa, our money has been overthrowing constitutionally-elected governments. Our money, and everybody knows it’s our money. Even the newspaper tells us it’s our money, and people still go on their merry way, preaching about Skygods and preaching about heaven, talking about the furniture of heaven and the temperature of hell, and doing nothing about the miserable conditions of spiritual wickedness in high places.
Voice in Congregation: Calls.
Jones: Now watch out. You’re next. (Pause) You’re next. Everything else is just about broken. There’s little else that can be done to overthrow governments now. The chickens are coming home to roost. They’re coming whether you want them or not. They’re coming. And I think many in here care, but there some in here don’t care for nothing.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: I went out and watched this meeting tonight. They don’t care for nothing. They don’t care about being respectful, they had– I saw sisters had to look around– Sister Knowles (phonetic) had to look around to get some some kind of peace, there’s no peace to be given. People won’t even be uh, kindly enough to sit and be courteous and listen to the great miracles that’ve taken place here. We had a miracle discussed here of this young boy that was dead, this child that was dead and the eye put back in. And the miracle that happened this week of leukemia, you can get the address from one of our secretaries, a child had been treated by doctors, and the doctors were so overwhelmed, I’ve healed the child and all the cancer of the blood has disappeared, and we gave the address last night. (Clears throat)
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Peace. But people won’t even be quiet to listen in this room. And all that’s concerned about liberty in America today – or in San Francisco tonight, as certain as I am here – the only ones really concerned about liberty tonight in San Francisco are in this room. Now I wish that were not so, and you may think that’s a bold and very presumptuous statement, but it’s unfortunately the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Whatever concern there is about liberty in the East Bay and the Bay tonight is in this room, and half of the people in this room are not concerned at least. So that doesn’t leave many people concerned about freedom. Say, oh, you mean there’s not more people concerned? Oh no, that’s exactly what I mean. Say I heard there’s a certain groups of– over here and certain nationals and certain Panthers. Yeah, I– I hear about them. They’re mostly over in Reno gambling.
Congregation: Delayed and scattered applause.
Jones: I hear about all these Coca-Cola revolutionaries and these Reno and Las Vegas revolutionaries. I hear about them, and wasting the people’s money living in penthouses up on the sixth and eighth floor. Sure. Sure, people don’t like me. I notice they’re not burning down any headquarters over there of these nationalist groups. There’s no Panther headquarters being burned down. They’re burning down Peoples Temple because they know where the truth is coming.
Congregation: Enthusiastic applause.
Jones: Peace. Peace. I’ve stopped bombs on every front this week. Bomb was thrown into our Temple property in Redwood Valley, it even reached up there, where we’ve got the cooperation of law enforcement. And I had to stop it in midair. It made a flash like the sun but didn’t move a lock on anyone’s hair. People coulda been killed all over the place, but I had to stop it metaphysically. They’re trying everywhere but– and then at the same time they did it in Los Angeles. The bomb was there, the man went running around saying a bomb was there, and by the time the demolition squad came, I had removed the bomb by my spirit.
Congregation: Applause and calls.
Jones: Peace. Peace. Peace. And I will continue to be just exactly what I always can be, if you will have me to be. I will continue to be omnipotent, omniscient, and (voice rises) omnipresent revolutionary force, if you will allow it and want it and desire it. Oh yes, I did. Don’t look puzzly. I’m not talking about dramatization now. You check down with Los Angeles. The man found the wires and everything. The bomb was intricately set up, and he went to get the demolition squad, but there wasn’t time, so I reached out and when he got back the bomb was gone. (Clears throat)
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: You can check with the staff down there tomorrow and get the mystery of this marvelous work, the beauty of it. So uh, simultaneously our Temples have been attacked on every front, primarily because they know we’re the last threat to liberty. Man by the name of Nystrom (phonetic) called me yesterday, as I wanted to reveal there and I could not have the accessibility with the equipment with anyone uh, with any clarity of sound at least. Sounded like an old bull frog. Well I– at least when I’m speaking personally, it is not quite as bad as a bullfrog as it is when it comes over that thing. Yesterday a man by the name of Nystrom called me, the head of a very great organization, he said, I uh, got someone that must talk to you and he– his conscience demands it before he gets on to Australia, but he doesn’t want to talk to you here. He wants to go to a pay telephone and call you at another phone. I gave uh, (clears throat) an idea uh, in certain uh, uh, peculiar way in which I was asked to give the idea where he could call and so he called there and uh, we made another arrangement. And a third call was placed before I finally got the information that was the most shocking kind of information you’d ever want to hear. The man had worked for a very important agency in this United States, high and low, and he was on a flight. Uh– He was getting ready to flee to Australia. He said, I want to tell you, Reverend, about some plans that have been concocted against you and against one other man who is not in the church field. He said they consider you– the powers of the master design that plan to take over this country consider you to be the only threat, and he told me intimate things that had happened that I knew he had to know. He had to be on the inside, because he had no supernatural gift, he had to be speaking exactly from knowledge. And when they told of their plan, it was a horrendous plan. He said he had to clear his conscience at least. He was going to get out of the country and he didn’t know where he was going to go. He wanted to– he was intending to go into the interior, he had a friend in the agricultural ministry in Australia, and he was intending to get away hopefully at least to hold on to his life. (Pause) He told me of a plan that you wouldn’t believe, some of you, you will never believe it till it starts. I’ve been preaching it all atong– all along the time. I didn’t need to be told. I’ve told you of racial extermination. I’ve told you of racial genocide. I’ve told you not to allow people to talk to us about child uh, abortions because – particularly blacks – because this is a racial genocide that’s beginning even in small ways now. He told me of the actual plan, the extermination of all brown, black, and yellow people in this country. (Pause) Because it’s– it was their opinion that because Chinese had been coolies and had been menservants, and the blacks had been slaves before, that we’ll never convince the black people to go along with a wage slave system, that the blacks would never go along, and so he told me of the most horrible plan to put blacks into total extermination, and all poor whites that wanted any liberty at all. Anyone that refuses to become a wage slave will be destroyed. And I wouldn’t of believed it either, if I hadn’t known it already in my heart, and had it proven by revelation after revelation, and then having it proven to me by the things that he told me that nobody knew but me. No one knew but me of some of the things that’d gone on because I just hadn’t got around to talking about it. So he knew he was on the inside, looking at this monstrous mess. Now we are in a difficult time, and we can make it, if you want to make it. Say, I’m going to get out of here. It’s already too late. They’ll look you up six months after you leave here. You are already finished. You love liberty enough to come in here, and some of you didn’t even know why you came in here. It’s already too late. Whether you’re in here by mistake or you’re in here because you brought yourself under your own power, it’s already too late for you. They will never trust you again. No matter how much you tell, no matter how you sing, no matter how many lies you would try to create against this holy work, there is nothing you can do.
Voice in Congregation: Right.
Jones: You won’t be able to wash your hands. You’ll be like Pilate trying to wash the blood off your hands, and there’s no way you’re going to get the blood off your hands, because they’re going to hold you responsible (Pilate in all four Gospels; specific reference to Matthew 27:24-25, “When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.”).
Voices in Congregation: Right.
Jones: They’ll never trust you, because you’ve been here. So the best thing for you to do is to get with us and cooperate and unite in this mind and spirit, and go on forward to liberty.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Peace. (Pause) He made a remark. He said I understand that people call you God. (Calms) Some of them do. And I said, well, we believe in the god ship consciousness. I wasn’t going to be freely talking about that. I said that uh, Jesus said that we all are gods. Ye are gods, he said, when they took him to co– and acclaimed uh, him first for his healings, then after a while he began to talk about him being the Son of God, and they took him and persecuted him. He said– When they took him to uh– criticize him, took him up to task, Jesus said, ye are gods and sons. He said ye all are gods (John 10:31-34). So I– I handled it that way. He said, well, a lot of people might think you’re crazy for that kind of a point of view, but he said people in high places in this nation fear you – and I think this is exactly as it was quoted – fear you as if you were a god. So if the people in high places recognize and fear me as if I were a god, how much more should you who have seen miracles that no man can do (voice rises) (unintelligible word, sounds like “reverence”) god.
Congregation: Sustained applause.
Jones: Peace. You should recognize the moving of the Spirit of God, for God is principle, and where God is, there’ll be mighty signs and wonders, miracles (Romans 15:17-19). And these miracles were here last Sunday. You saw people on crutches that had to– had all kinds of operations healed instantly and dancing just like a little child spinning on a top. You saw as they s– mentioned people running who had incurable diseases of the lungs, and it was not possible for them to even exercise, and they ran and they kept on running. You saw cancers healed and spit up, you saw all– all miracles. You saw one healed of blindness on the back row, I remember. One miracle of one woman healed on the back row of blindness. Now if you who have seen these things cannot believe, when those who are running this nation down to hell do believe, that ought to make us feel ashamed.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: (Pause) Now if Mr. Nixon didn’t announce it to you, [if] you got good sense you would know that a dictatorship’s coming, because people are not going to allow what’s happening like today, another young child on the front page, a little eleven-year-old or ten-year-old taken away. Said undoubtedly he’s killed. Little blond-hair boy last– couple of weeks ago with a little Mexican girl, we– I had to find one in Los Angeles, I– one of our members, the nine-year-old child was taken, but I brought that back because I’m different than the ordinary. And I brought that child back, and I brought the children back on many occasions. I think it was Louvie Davis’, wasn’t it, that was– When she called on me just found– it went back into her house and found, there the children were, or suddenly they kind of appeared at the same time I was meditating. And we’ve not lost any children to these vicious animals that’re out there. But we are extraordinary class of evolutionary development. Now if you didn’t uh, agree with that, you’re kind of foolish. Now if I had said I am the I Am, you might have taken an issue with that (Exodus 3:14, “And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am.”), although I know I am what I say I am. I have no question about it.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Peace. Surely you must admit that in an atmosphere where people have no uh, problem being resurrected– Everyone that dies in my presence where I’m immediately present, or where people have all these miracles done and have little ones returned suddenly, as it were, in the air. The very night it was brought to me here in this pulpit, at that moment I said they’ll be– it’ll be all right, and look around in the bed– living room and then– There they are and the nine-year-old down in Los Angeles that I just returned. But this shows you how bad the conditions are, that people are having their children stolen out of their homes, people cannot walk down a street at night, Certainly you can’t walk in the poorer neighborhoods, and it’s getting really difficult to walk anywhere.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: Now what’s going to happen? This is all stirred up, this climate’s all stirred up, of course, to make the people want to do something about it. And you’re hearing a lot of people cry for law and order. Now they’ve invoked a new legislation that– uh, we see the gas chamber back before our eyes. And I notice every crime that’s going to be– it’s going to be used for, is a crime where ninety percent of those people who are involved in the crime are black. You read– you read the statistics, you’ll find out I’m telling just exactly the truth on the matter. Now if murder is right, if it’s right to kill anyone, they– they’ve got a law now that says it’s a– it’s right to kill a– is a– anyone who kills a police officer should go to the gas chamber. Well, I’m going to say if it’s going to be right to kill anyone, then it should be the same (Pause) right extended to the little old lady or the little old man that’s killed on the street, but in our country today, the people in uniform are worth more than the little old ladies and the little old men.
Congregation: Scattered applause.
Jones: There’s nothing in there that says that the little old ladies and little old men that are beat to death or ravagely beaten and assaulted and die in their homes or on the street, nothing’s going to happen to their murderers. But if you shoot somebody in a uniform, it’s automatic death. We’re a sick country – very sick – when people can ch– say that one person’s life is more valuable than the other. Now perhaps the Supreme Court won’t– won’t uphold this, if the Supreme Court exists. And if Mr. Nixon[‘s] statement is true that he won’t accept the decision from the Supreme Court that would reverse his own decision, (Pause) Mr. Kennedy will be correct that we’ll have a bloodless coup. A bloodless coup means that dictatorship takes over without a gun being shot. And I tell you tonight that that’s exactly how it’s going to happen. It may not and very quite likely will not happen over this issue, but it will come without a gun being fired. You’re going to wake up one night, and you’ll find emergency Executive Orders 11490 and 11647 to give the president the total power to declare what is a clear and present danger. You will see those laws in effect, and when those laws go in effect, that means that every police department, every sheriff’s department, every National Guard, everybody in this United States will keep one tempo. We’ll march at the same beat that the president says march. He’s already got the power. Executive Orders 11490 and 11647, just revised, gives him absolute power. The courts will be suspended. The legislatures will be suspended. They might as well be anyway. They’re now talking today – I heard them talking – about doing away with the jury system and letting judges decide your fate. Well, that’s wonderful. Well, that’s really wonderful. A bunch of paid bureaucrats deciding whether you’re guilty or innocent. This country was founded on the principle that you had a right to be tried by a jury of your peers, but as Sister Tupper uh, one– uh, one of our secretaries, the valley secretary, she just served on the jury this week, she said I never saw anything like it. It was so cruel. Said they didn’t want to do anything but get out of there and convict the person, they wanted to find an excuse to convict the little girl, even though the evidence was against them, they were determined to convict her. Even some of them said, well, her parents are not here anyway, so she ought to be convicted. Sister Tupper setting there– right down there on the front row, and I’ve been on– the foreman of the grand jury (clears throat) and I’ve served on many a jury, and if you’ve served on a jury, you know that’s the way people are today. They want to get their– to get to their beauty shop, they want to get home to their dinner, and they want to convict people just as quick as they can convict them. I’ve served. I know. And if you’ve served on a jury, you know.
Voice in Congregation: That’s right.
Jones: That’s how little value liberty has anymore. But at least you’ve got some chance when you had 12. Now most states have reduced it to six. When you got 12 people, there was a chance, when all of them had to agree whether you were guilty, when you had all ne– the necessity that all agree that you were guilty, at least you had a chance that there’d be one Good Samaritan that would require all the facts. Now they want to make judges decide that. And if Mr. Nixon gets his way, or the leaders, the spiritual wicked leaders in high places, if they get their way, nobody will have a– a say-so except the president.
Voices in Congregation: That’s right.
Jones: He’ll decide whether you’re guilty or innocent. He’ll decide how long you go to jail. He’ll decide where you work. He’ll decide how much food you’ll have. He’ll decide everything. He’ll have total power. Say, it won’t come. I’ll take any bet here tonight, and I’m not a gambling man. Put your money where your mouth is.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: I’ll– I’ll take any bet. (Pause) It will happen. It will happen. I wish you were right and I was wrong, but it will happen. Because the people are going to demand it. You hear it on the radio talk shows, they say all this lawlessness, all this crime, all this violence, I don’t feel safe, and they’re stirring up all this violence, shooting the drugs to our children, pushing the liquor on the neighborhoods, pushing everything that would uh, pollute the minds and destroy our own will. They’re giving everything we can that will discourage us from having any peace and encourage of the anarchy, they’re encouraging it in high places, because if a nine-year-old boy can find heroin pushers, then the FBI could if they wanted to find them. (Clears throat)
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Peace. I don’t know whether you’re familiar or not but in– we’ve had nearly every major city in America has lost a child under ten years of age from heroin. One a day die in New York, a child a day. Now let me say again, if a nine-year-old, and in one case I think it was a seven-year-old. If a seven-year-old can find the du– the drug pusher, if he can find the pusher man, let me tell you, the FBI could and the CIA could and the police could if they really wanted to, but they don’t want to. They don’t want to. They want us to be divided amongst ourselves. They want us to get on drugs so that we uh, don’t know our own mind. Why, these people on drugs will even steal from their own mother. I just talked to one of the relatives in– just a moment ago. I’d saved her. She told me how the picture at the background when I was with some of the workers, she told me how a picture had saved her from her own– I– I won’t speak of who she is, but her own (voice rises) child tried to kill her–
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: –to get $6.55 she had in a purse, (Pause) because he’s on dope, and the system wants him on dope so we’ll kill off each other or we’ll have it so bad that we’ll all want laws to get tougher. The law’ll be so desperate that we’ll say, come on, big brother, come on, big dictator. At least I want to be able to walk in the streets at night. Now what kind of a dictatorship is it going to be? Will it be a dictatorship of the people? Not a ghost of a chance. Will it be a socialist kind of dictatorship? But I don’t like dictatorships at all. My desire is to see a perfect utopia based on non-violence, based on apostolic socialism as it was on the day of Pentecost when they had all things in common (Acts 2). But is there any chance of it being socialistic? Not one chance in the world. The only possible way it can go is fascistic. Look at all these people sleeping in here. Going on to hell, they’re on their way to hell and don’t know it.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: They’re fanning the flames of hell right now, and don’t even have enough– enough courage or patience to stay awake. I’ve got the key. I’ve got the key. I’ve got the way to get through.
Congregation: Calls.
Jones: I’ve got a way through the wilderness, but you better listen.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: (Pause) When you’ve got oil industries that kill off President [John] Kennedy, and it’s been proved by who killed Kennedy. Colonel Buchanan. He had to get out of the nation after he proved it, and many others have documented it. Anybody knows that [Jack] Ruby and all that bunch, and Ruby died conveniently of cancer, [Lee Harvey] Oswald was no more the uh, killer of Kennedy than I am.
Voice in Congregation: Right.
Jones: He was just a st– tool, he was a patsy. And all these pictures that came out and films that documented that Kennedy was fired on from at least two, if not three, different directions, and then they say Oswald was the only one that killed him. And we find that Ruby Carroll knew uh– Ruby knew more – not Ruby Carroll, excuse me – Ruby knew more about– Jack Ruby knew more about what was happening, the fact that the time of the moving of Oswald had been changed. He knew something that the chief of the Dallas police didn’t, that only the Secret Service knew, the personal Secret Service of the President of the United States, only they knew when Oswald was to be moved, but Ruby said, I found out. He said it on his tape, that little record that was sold just before he died. He said I found out they were going to change his moving time, so I went over to the sheriff’s uh, department, the jail at a different hour. So it was a conspiracy. Computer Automation Magazine said, and a Republican magazine at that, it said all the facts– it said all the facts of this murder through their statistical computers, and it came out that at least 50 people were involved with the murder of President Kennedy, and they were from the top cabinet– from the top of the cabinet of the United States clear down to the Dallas Police. He said if that’s what the statistical computation came out, that this murder had to be carried out with the design of at least 50 people in every level of government. Now that isn’t my opinion, that’s Computer and Automation Magazine, a conservative Republican magazine, that just did a statistical study that had no ax to grind whatsoever. All these facts have been given us. Just like Martin Luther King. They murdered him. Anybody that tries to unite the people, they murder them. They murdered him.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: And you say– then– then we come up with that old story that it was only one man [James Earl Ray]. Yet somebody caused the uh, entire Memphis Police to go the wrong way. Somebody got on their radio waves, their own– their own frequency band and told them to go the wrong way. Now does one man be able to shoot and one man get on the radio and do all that together while he’s running down the street. The one man that shot him was uh, too busy getting away to be doing any radio work, but it was a high-level thing that was able to break into the frequency band of the Memphis Police and get them to go the wrong way, and we were told a big fat lie, and most of these old jackleg Uncle Tom preachers tell it to us, and say uh, he was killed by one man, and we just go right on believing it. (Clears throat)
Congregation: Scattered applause.
Jones: (Calms) ‘Course, I know what you’re going to say to me. And that’s why it takes all night to get through to people. You’re going to say to me immediately what– we don’t have to worry because God’s going to come and he’s going to take care of it all.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: God’s going to come with a fan in his hand, he’s going to shake up everything, and it’s gonna be set right, uh– How do you know, you say? Well my– my Bible tells me so. The Bible also tells you a lot of other stuff, you don’t know whether it’s so.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: (Pause) You better listen. (Taps pulpit) I haven’t got much more time. The doors are closing. (Pause) I notice one thing you– you don’t– you don’t take that Bible very seriously in there when it says, sell all you have–
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: You don’t– You don’t take that Bible very seriously at all. It says in there if wouldst thou be perfect, Jesus said. When the man came to him how to be saved, he said if wouldst thou be perfect, and he said sell all that you have and give to the poor (Matthew 19:21, “[Jesus] said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.” Also, Luke 18:22). You don’t take that very seriously. It says when you go out in these days, he said in the days of the kingdom when you go out to minister, don’t take any purse, and don’t take any scrip.
Voice in Congregation: Amen.
Jones: That’s scrip. That’s writing. That’s scripture right there. It says don’t take any Bible (Mark 6:7-12, esp. Mark 6:8, “[Jesus] commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:” Also Luke 9:3, Luke 10:4, Luke 22:35-36). (Ministerial fervor) It said, open your mouth, and I will fill it (Psalm 81:10, “I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.”).
Congregation: Calls.
Jones: It says take no thought for what you will say or what you will do, for in that hour when the Spirit of Truth is come, (voice rises) he will lead you and guide you (Luke 12:11-12, “And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.”).
Congregation: Shouts and applause.
Jones: Peace. Peace. Peace. (Pause) (Moderates) I notice nobody takes that kind of theory, but when we get into trouble and our nation looks like it’s going to hell, we all start riding on the book. We just hide behind the book, and say well, God’s gone take care of it. Now let me tell you, your Grandma didn’t tell you this for nothing, God helps those who help themselves.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: You see, there’s great truth in this Bible, but it has to be brought out by the prophet. That’s why you must have this booklet [The Letter Killeth]. It will not be offered again. Very rarely will it be offered away from the mother church in Redwood Valley. You better get this and study it and get an eye opener of the ages, because if you don’t get this eye opener, then you’ll be lost. This Bible contains truth, and that truth cannot be brought out except without a preacher. How can you hear without a preacher or a prophet? How can he preach lest he be sent? How do you know he’s sent? (Romans 10:13-17) He’ll have nine gifts, just like I’ve got. He’ll have the fruits of the Spirit. He’ll have boldness, compassion, gentleness, meekness, courage. He’ll have all the fruits of the spirit and all the gifts of the spirit, and if he doesn’t have it, you won’t know your front end from your rear end (Galatians 5:22-23; see also Ephesians 5:9).
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Peace. Without one that is sent with metaphysical, political, and sociological force of truth today, you won’t make it at all (Romans 10:13-17).
Voice in Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: Didn’t say you would get– wou– would live by this. Said you’d die by this. (Taps pulpit) 2 Corinthians 3:6 says– What does it say? The letter killeth. The letter to Romans, the letter to Timothy, the letter to Thessalonica, the letters of Corinthians, the letters kill. 2 Corinthians 3:6, the letters kill, but the spirit. You see I’m in the Spirit. Love, truth. God is love, God is truth, and I’m right here in that Spirit. The Spirit will make alive, but the letter – all the Bibles – will kill, the Bibles murder, the Bibles destroy, but the Spirit maketh alive (2 Corinthians 3:6, “Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”).
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: You see, you do not know by the letter. The letter has been taken by King James, who persecuted the early whites– the early white colonists. He was a great persecutor. He was a drunk. He was a homosexual deviate. Not that that was his uh, uh, any major offense against him, though it is not my custom. I would say certainly his drunkenness and his slave-holding methods would be an indictment against him. He was a slave owner, and he was a slave trader, and he sent the first ship Jesus, the first ship to Africa, the first ship was called the Good Ship Jesus, and it brought blacks back in chains. This king who wrote this Bible did that. The last version. That’s why you’ve got to have a prophet in these days, because the last interpretation of the Bible was written by a murderer, a whoremonger, a homosexual, a pathological deviate and a slave trader who tricked the blacks and the Indians and the whites by sending the Good Ship Jesus to bring people back in chains. That is what was done by the King of England. You understand. There’s a difference between the Word of God and King James. King James is not God.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: You following what I’m saying. You understand what I’m saying? King James is not God.
Voice in Congregation: Amen.
Jones: Man must live by every word. They say, well, what is the Word of God then? How do I know? I just told you. I am the fulfillment of that in this dispensation. You can be the fulfillment in your dispensation. If you will take a cognizance and take likeness of– to what I’m saying and listen closely to what I am saying and reflect upon it, you’ll take a picture of me. You can reproduce a greater picture in your own likeness. You say, well, Jesus’ day is a great day. No. This is a greater day than Jesus’ day, because he said these things shall you do – Jesus said this – these things shall you do and what?
Jones and Congregation: Greater.
Jones: Because I go to the Father. So this is a greater day than the day of Jesus (John 14:12, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”).
Voice in Congregation: Yes.
Jones: In many ways, you can see this, if you have an eye to spiritual understanding. And if you have that eye, and you have that boldness of the preaching ministry, you’re perfected with what? Apostles, pastors, teachers, evangelists. You must have apostles, pastors, teachers, evangelists, so forth and so on, without which there is no what? Perfection of the saints (Ephesians 4:11-12, “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”). But I would like to get this across to you because you’re going to lose your soul thinking that you’re going to be saved by just reading (Romans 10:13-17). In here is truth, in here is also error. In here are statements by the devil himself. You’ve got quotes of Satan. Somebody’ll say I’m going to– Every word in here is true. Why, it’s not so. There are statements in here by Lucifer, supposedly. They’re not so. A whole lot of statements in here of translation that are not so. If you’ll read my booklet that is nothing more than your own scriptures, just put together, you’ll see with your own eyes that there is truth and error here, and it takes honesty, it takes a spirit of truth, it takes someone to im– to become the Spirit of Truth to bring out the truth to you.
Voice in Congregation: That’s right.
Jones: Now what is example? And I– This is what bothers me, as I say. You will go to this Bible when you don’t want to work, but when you want to get out of something, you uh– you– you’ll run to the Bible when you uh, can’t face the reality, but when you uh, have this Bible meddling with how you live, you don’t want anything to do with it. People that’re uptight right now. They’ll be a lot of people uptight and they’re usually uptight in most of the meetings it seems happen to be women about the Bible. When I get on this subject, there’s always seem to be women uptight about the Bible–
End of Side 1
Side 2
Jones: – intents of the heart. One of the women called out on this weekend was told exactly what she was thinking. On Wednesday night, a woman was saved from a stroke, was healed from a stroke, and she was there, she’s sitting on the right hand right now. You were told the exact page in a book you were reading. And not– not now, but how long ago? Year ago or two years ago. Exact page in a book that she was eading– reading a few years ago, and not just something about that page, but it named the number of the page and told that she was hung up on that page, and I think the number was because it’s that peculiar number, it was 16.
Congregation: Stirs. Scattered applause.
Jones: Peace. There she stands or sits right back there. She was healed of a stroke, because I knew her thoughts. (Ministerial fervor) I looked into her mind and I separated the bone from the marrow. I’m sharper than a two-edged sword. You feel it already.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: If you’re in this room, you feel the sharpness because I cut– I cut deep. I cut into your old traditions. I cut into your old ways., I cut into your old lifestyle, I cut, I cut, I cut, and I cut.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: (Calms) Peace. (Ministerial cadence) I am sharper than a two-edged sword. I am a discerner of the thoughts, and I surely know– I surely do know the intents of the heart, and that is what the Word of God is. Hebrews 4:12 tells you, that’s the only way you can know the Word of God. When the Word of God comes, it will be sharper than a two-edged sword, and it will discern the thoughts, and it will know the intents of the heart, and I ask you if I’m not doing it (unintelligible word) (Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”). (Clears throat)
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: (Moderates) Peace. I am showing you your thoughts. And you go home and read Hebrews 4:12, and you’ll know then more and more of what I am. (Voice rises to ministerial fervor) Say, what is the Word? In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God and the Word is made flesh and dwells amongst us and you behold the glory, you’ll get no glory until the Word is made flesh, and now you’re getting some glory, because I have made the Word flesh (John 1:1-14).
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Peace. Peace. Say, that cannot be. You cannot be that. You can be exactly what you think you are. As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. If in my mind, I desire to become God to you, I can become God to you (Proverbs 23, esp. Proverbs 23:7, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…”).
Voice in Congregation: Right.
Jones: If in my mind I want to become a fool to you, I can be a fool, but I don’t think we need any more fools, but we do need to see God.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: So in my mind, I knew that the promises were yeah and amen.
Voice in Congregation: Yeah.
Jones: (Moderates) As a man thinketh in his mind or heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). In my heart, you know the history. When the great combustion took place when I was just about four or five years of age, when I was dying in my heart, I listened, and I believed. When all the churches had closed their door to me and I was in poverty and filth and squalor, I listened that I was the only God to me there was. (Ministerial fervor) I listened to that voice, and it healed me when I was dying, and it’s brought me through gunshots, it’s brought me through stabbings, it’s brought me through trucks that’ve run over me, it’s brought me through oppositions, persecutions, it’s brought through all kinds of temptations and trials.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: But more than that, more than that, hallelujah, because I have yielded myself to God fully and completely. I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, Jim Jones but Christ that liveth in me.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: If I am dead, and Christ lives, that means this is the body of Jesus Christ (Galatians 2:19-20, “For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”).
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: This is the temple of the Holy Ghost.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: (Calm) Peace. (Pause) (Voice builds throughout) That light bulb has all the power. In just one little light bulb has all the power of all the energy that’s in this (draws out word) whole great big– big building. This edifice, a universe of a building, that one light bulb has (draws out word) all the energy. It’s got the same power that’s coming out of the source.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: That’s what (unintelligible word) tonight. I’ve got the same power that came out of the source, the same power that said in the beginning, let there be light (Genesis 1:2, “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”). It’s now the light of the world.
Voice in Congregation: Yes.
Jones: (Voice builds to fervor) I am the light of the world (John 8:12, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Also John 9:5, John 12:46, 1 John 1:7, and Revelation 21:24). Now that makes you upset, some of you, but it said ye are the lights of the world (Matthew 5:14, “Ye are the light of the world…”). Why don’t you let me chip off a little bit of that “ye” and make it an “I.” (clears throat) It is written “ye are the lights of the world.” Well, I want you to know I’m one of those ye’s and I’m a (emphasitic) mighty big ye.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Peace. When you recognize that ye are the light of the world, then I will go back into the ye (Matthew 5:14), but until you recognize who you are, I sure as the dickens am going to declare who I am. I know who I am.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: You ought to know just as much as I know who I am, and when you recognize who you are, then I will cease to have to tell you who I am, but until you recognize who you are, I am that I am (Exodus 3:14).
Congregation: Cheers and applause.
Jones: (Calms) Peace. (Pause) Hallelujah. (Pause) When you haven’t suffered because of me finding out who I am, you have been healed.
Congregation: Calls.
Jones: (Voice builds throughout) Death has been removed from you, the curses have been cast from you, houses have been given to you, (unintelligible word, sounds like “lion”) has been provided for you. Your lives have been protected. When everybody else has been bombed or been injured, and all the other churches have been burned down here, there’ve been injuries, I have protected every one of you because you recognize and believe in your heart. In your heart, you think I am, and in my heart, I know I am.
Congregation: Cheers and applause.
Jones: (Calms) Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Praises be the name of God Jehovah Jireh. Blessed. Hallelujah.
Congregation: Cheers and applause.
Jones: (Voice rises to ministerial fervor) As you think, so are you (Proverbs 23:7). You are promised that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you were able to even ask, much less to think. Said he is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you’re able to ask or to think. (Ephesians 3, esp. Ephesians 3:19-20, “And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God, Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.”) (Moderates, then builds) Have you ever asked to see God? Have you ever asked to see God almighty? Have you ever hoped to see God almighty? Have you ever thought that there might be a possibility to see God Almighty? Well, I’m telling you, it is written, that he is able to do exceedingly abundantly, above (draws out word) all that you are able to ask or even to think.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: (Calms) Praises. (Pause) Peace. Now indeed some have got the good judgment take the Word at its face value that, as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). So Father thinks in his heart that he is (pause) God, and in his heart, (deliberate) he is God, because Jesus said ye are gods. Now that is scripture. It said the j– to whom the scripture, the letter of love has come, and it cannot be broken, it is written ye are gods. St. John the tenth chapter, I think it is. And it cannot be broken. It said then it is that ye are all gods (John 10:34). Well, I had to manifest my own individuality in God, my own personification of God, that you might know what you are. (Voice builds) Now you say all I got to do then is go out and become God. Oh no, it takes a lot of dying. It takes a lot of dying. I’ve come down through 42 generations. I have been strafed, I’ve been shot, I’ve been hung, I’ve come through lynch mob leaders, I’ve come through hangings, I’ve come through every kind of opposition. I have come down through 42 generations, treading the winepresses alone (most likely Isaiah 63:3, “I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.” See also Job 24:11, Jeremiah 48:33, and Revelation 19:15). It will take you a while to get crucified with Christ, so don’t run out there and get cocky and say you’re going to be just like Jim Jones on Geary Avenue tonight, because you won’t make it that quick.
Congregation: Calls and applause.
Jones: (Calms) But if you’ll get a hold of this principle, it will come forth in you in due season (likely Galatians 6:9, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”), but you’ve got to take a copy. You’ve got to look at the original. You’ve got to take a reflection, an introspection, and a deep analysis of what you see. You’ve got to look at it and copy it. You know when someone wants to take a picture, they get into a proper perspective, and they must focus their lens. They want to be sure that they can see what they’re looking at. Some of you’ve never even taken a look at me, much less listened to me, you’ve never even taken a look at me, and if you had taken a look at me, only a look would’ve saved you. Only a look would have saved you. Look and live, my children, live (Isaiah 45:3, “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.”).
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: It is written, blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. If you would take me at face value and at surface value, if you would take what I’m saying, the holy truth that I’m giving you, if you’d get a pure heart, listen to what I’m saying, and take my word seriously, and heed my commandments, and get free of racism and pure of social injustices, and purify yourself from the love of money which is the root of all evil, the capitalistic whore-mongering system, if you would purify yourself from the love of money and the lust of the flesh and the pride of life, if you would purify your heart– The moment you get pure in heart, that moment – not tomorrow but today – that moment you will not think you see God, you will know you see God (Several intermixed in this paragraph: Matthew 5:8, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”; Joshua 22:5, “But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul;” 1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is the root of all evil:”).
Congregation: Applause
Jones: (In full throat) Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see who? God.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: You understand the mystery. (Shouts) They shall see God. It doesn’t say, they will see God or sometime in the rapture they will see God or sometime in the great celestial (unintelligible word) they will see God, but it says blessed are – the present tense – blessed are the pure in heart, for now they shall see God (Matthew 5:8).
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: (Calm) Blessed. Hallelujah. I thank you. It’s a great mystery, and yet it’s so simple. (Pause) Say, I have trouble (small laugh) believing it in you as the author and finisher, but you’ve never had any trouble believing in Skygod, you mean? (Hebrews 12:1-2, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”) You mean you haven’t had some trouble believing in one of those? Well, I’m sure you must’ve had some trouble. Why don’t you try with something littler until you understand something bigger, ‘cause are you sure– if you’re honest, you’ve had some trouble understanding the sky.
Congregation: Calls.
Jones: You had some difficulty understanding the Skygod. (Pause) You’ve had some difficulty understanding the kind of God that King James told about. Now I want this kept together, ‘cause I’m linking both Wednesday and Thursday together, and I don’t want to have to go through this every night.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: And it’s a job to get everything linked together, ‘cause folk don’t want to hear the truth too easily.
Voices in Congregation: Right.
Jones: (Pause) Now you tell me you didn’t have some difficulty believing in the story of the Skygod as King James of England said it. (Emphasis) Aww. If you didn’t, then you’re a dummy, ‘cause according to King James here, God was up there in the skies. That’s what Billy Graham says and all these evangelists said, he’s up there in the skies, and he was lonely, and he made some angels, some cherubims and some seraphims, and they started singing hosannas to him and hallelujah, but that still was too boring to him. (Pause) He made him a more beautiful angel, the most beautiful angel of all he made, according to the King James, was Lucifer, ‘cause he didn’t like those angels that were singing in the same tones, the cherubims and the seraphims, so he made him a more– most beautiful angel, and they called him Lucifer. But he made him too well. (Pause) Now I’m not talking about the true God, I’m talking about what King James has said. He made Lucifer so well that Lucifer led off a third of his angels into a revolt. Now, isn’t it true?
Congregation: Yes.
Jones: Lucifer led off one-third of the angels into revolt. Now whose fault was that? Lucifer didn’t ask to be made. God made a– a– God made him. The Skygod made him, according to the old tradition, the Skygod made Lucifer (Lucifer fall from heaven in Isaiah 14; one-third reference is post-biblical).
Voice in Congregation: Right.
Jones: Is that right? [Discussion of Book of Job] In the beginning, God, and out of God, proceeded everything. You mean you haven’t had any trouble believing in that kind of God. You haven’t had any trouble believing in the King James God? Remember one God, according to King James – not the true God, but according to King James – God had one faithful man. Who was that man? Job. Everybody else had gone to hell. Everybody else had cursed God and died. But he said, I’ve got one faithful servant left. Lucifer came up and he said– he said, you see here, Satan, I’ve got one faithful servant you can’t touch. Lucifer said, give me a chance at him. Said, all right, said you– you messed up on everything you’ve made. Give me a chance at him. God said, oh no, you can do with him what you will. Now isn’t that a fine way to reward faithfulness? Now when you’re faithful to me, and I– I say I’m just a earthly God. I’m just a temple of the Holy Spirit of Truth. I’m just a simple epistle. But when you’re faithful to me, I don’t turn you over to Satan.
Voices in Congregation: Right.
Jones: That be like me uh, uh, I’ve got– I say, looked down there at night and I say, well, who’s faithful? Lois Ponts, she’s been a good nurse. You’re faithful. All– All right, I’m going to see how faithful you are. I’m gonna send you out over here into one of these bad sections of town and– and uh, see how well you do without– your clothes off.
Congregation: Laughs. Stirs.
Jones: Hmm? That’s just about how stupid it is. I take one of you out, and I say, well, all right, I’ll put you over here with a den of devils. I want you to prove how faithful you are. Now that’s not the way you treat faithful people. You don’t treat faithful people that way. When you find somebody faithful, you give them more and more encouragement and more love and more protection. You don’t try to give them more tests.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: I’m talking about the living God. I don’t know what you do about your dead God, but I know what the living God does.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Peace. (Pause) Well, Job– Job had been faithful in all of his ways, and he says I’m going to let the hedge down. God – the false God, the King James God – said going to let the hedge down, and lo and behold, what did come to Job? What happened to him? Well, you name it. Children were taken. (unintelligible word) Cattle was taken, (Pause) houses were gone, lands were parched, finally he got boils, everything was taken from Job. He had boils, and the skin worms got in his boils, and poor old Job. I wish I had people who were as faithful to me for all I do for them, as much as that Job dummy was to that Skygod.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: (Ministerial fervor) ‘Cause Job– Job stood up and said, though the skin worms destroy my body, yet in my flesh, rotten as it is, I will see God. Now if somebody like Job could see God with all the hell he was going through, why can’t you see God tonight?
Congregation: Cheers and applause.
Jones: Hallelujah. Peace. Peace. (Pause) (Voice calms, then rises throughout) All these things, and you say you didn’t have any trouble believing it. You didn’t have any trouble believing in the Skygod. Well, you did have trouble. I’ll link you up with the universal mind, if you’ll just give me time, but first you got to get rid of the old gods before you can get a– the living god. You can’t put any new wine into old vessels, you can’t patch up this garment. You’ve got to get a new garment of praise and a new garment of service and a new garment of thanksgiving (Matthew 9:16-17, “No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.” See also Mark 2:21-22, Luke 5:36-39).
Congregation: Calls.
Jones: (Voice calms, then rises throughout) You had trouble. You did have trouble. Many a time the heavens were brass, many times you couldn’t get your prayer above your head (Deuteronomy 28:23, “And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.”). Many times it seemed like all of the clouds were falling in on you. It was so heavy, the soul oppression. Don’t tell me you didn’t have trouble believing before you saw me. You had trouble.
Congregation: Calls and applause.
Jones: When you got into the legal difficulty, there was no attorneys provided for you. There was no home provided for you when you were lonely. You didn’t know whether you were going to have any place to go to when you got old, but somebody came along and changed all that. Somebody made a di– a difference in your life.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Somebody made the living God real to you.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: (Calms) Peace. (Pause) You’re precious. You may be seated. (Pause) You had as much trouble as Job did, and more, because you see, it doesn’t make any sense. In the beginning was God. If King James is right, why did he make a devil? No one made him make a devil. Uh– And I know Billy Graham, some of them say, well, he made the devil so he could tempt you. Well, why’d he make you? (Laughs) Those are questions you cannot answer. I mean, you see, you don’t– you– if you were up there– and you have to put yourself in the other fellow’s shoes for a moment. If you were that Skygod, and you were up there alone, I know what some of you would do. You’d say, well, I got myself in this mess, now at least I’m going to put my pain on anybody else. (Pause) Come on now.
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: Some of you say, I don’t know how I got to be God, but I– if I– if I’m in this situation, I’m not going to put it on anybody else. (Laughs) You just go through the deep, deep recesses of space, and you’d let the dark just keep on covering the deep, but that fellow wanted to get some light out. It’d been fine if King James was right, but the kind of God he described didn’t make any sense at all, ‘cause after he got the light out, he put a devil out.
Voice in Congregation: That’s right.
Jones: [Discussion of Genesis 1 and 2] He put darkness out with light, all supposedly to test you. And the first story, the first chapter is enough for you to have trouble to believe. The first chapter in the book of Genesis is enough for you to have trouble believing.
Voice in Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: ‘Cause you see s– uh, vegetables growing before the sun comes out. You hear something put together in six days. That’s pretty rough to get all that together in six days. You have all that to believe, and you’ve got to believe that, and you say you had no trouble believing that. Well, you do have trouble, if you go back there and read it, because you’ll find there’s two creation stories – First Genesis and Second Genesis – and the two of them don’t agree. They tell the same story exactly, but they changed it– the whole history, the whole development is changed in the second chapter, till you don’t know which end’s up. But more than that, Adam and Eve– What do they do? They didn’t ask to come into this mess. But uh, uh, God gets a hold of some dust. He’s tired of angels now, and the best, the most beautiful angel he made, he’s gone flit off into space somewhere and taken a third of his angels, so he’s going to try on little men. So he gets him some dust and he (unintelligible word) something up there and he says now A-damn.
Voice in Congregation: Laughs.
Jones: A-damn all right, because it’s been damned ever since it started A– damn. A– damn.
Congregation: Laughter and scattered applause.
Jones: Shh. So he look at Adam and he says, well, (stumbles over words) Adam don’t look quite complete. Everything we’ve got is come because of the false God being taught. That’s why you got to get a true God. That’s why women got so much trouble today. That’s why women don’t count for nothing. That’s why women don’t have equal pay. They can do the same amount of work, but they won’t get half the pay. They won’t get the job promotions. They never get a hold of the top of the– uh, the organizations. They never get to really own the businesses. Somehow they’re blocked in the wage market. It all comes back to Adam and Eve. Because where did Eve– Eve only counted for one rib out of Adam. It took a whole mud pile to make Adam–
Voice in Congregation: Laughs.
Jones: (Voice climbs) –but after he made Adam, this false King James God just plucked out one rib– one rib from Adam, and that was woman. Whoa-man, out of man. You see the whole reason we’re in trouble today, the whole reason blacks are mistreated, the whole reason women are mistreated, it comes from the false religion.
Congregation: Calls and scattered applause.
Jones: Here it says– In King James, it says servants, slaves, obey your master. That’s why Indians and blacks and poor whites have been slaves for hundreds of years, because it says slaves, obey your master. (Voice moderates) If you got a good master, be thankful, if you’ve got a bad master, endure him (1 Peter 2:18, “Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.).” (Pause) That’s what it says in the book.
Voices in Congregation: That’s right.
Jones: But Christ didn’t say it, because he said, in Christ we’re free. There’s no male nor female, no bond no free (Galatians 3:28, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”), (clears throat) but King James said a lot of stuff. You’ve got to get the words of Christ separate from all that King James says. And who would know what Christ said better than Christ.
Congregation: Delayed applause.
Jones: And now I won’t elaborate on that, because if you didn’t get what I was saying then, you were very much asleep. (Pause) (Quiet, then builds) Now Adam and Eve. They began the situation, and they were told by God – and I’m closing on that subject in that– that portion in just a moment – and they were told by the false god of King James that uh, they didn’t know anything. After all, they just come from mud and one of them from a rib. They didn’t know anything, and he said there’s two trees out there, and one of them you can eat of, and the other one you dare not. You can eat of the tree of life, but you don’t dare eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. You can’t eat the tree that’ll teach you what’s right from wrong. (Pause) Hear what I’m saying? You can’t eat of that tree that tells you what’s right from wrong. Well now, if you don’t eat of a tree, if you don’t know right from wrong, how you going to know to keep from doing right from wrong?
Voices in Congregation: That’s right.
Jones: If you can’t get the knowledge of right and wrong, how you going to know what’s right and what’s wrong?
Voices in Congregation: That’s right.
Jones: I say just as stupid as it is– as stupid as telling a bullfrog not to try to catch flies or a pussycat to keep him from chasing mice, ‘cause he don’t know any better. He doesn’t know one thing, but to go after those mice and that bullfrog, every once and he’ll throw that tongue out and get him a fly. He doesn’t know it’s wrong to take flies. You gonna have to teach him. You gonna have to let him eat some tree. (Pause) (Quietens) I’ve lost half these people now. The other half that I had, I’ve lost half of them.
Congregation: Stirs.
Jones: It’s too hard this way, but I think it’s the only way we gotta go. If we only end up with just a Gideon’s number, if we only end up with a Gideon’s army of 300, I’d rather have 300 people got their good senses than 300 dummies (Judges 6 and 7). (Clears throat)
Congregation: Applause.
Jones: So Adam and Eve didn’t know any difference, and so they go over there and what? Ooh, God said, you eat that tree, the moment you do, the day that you eat thereof, in that day, you will surely die, he said. Not only was he not a false God, he was a liar, because he– they walked over here now and the most beautiful angel has turned into a snake in the meantime. The old snake settin’ there, and uh, he’s settin’ there in the garden. And he sees Eve going tripping by, and he says, honey, you rip off that apple, you won’t die. Say you can just rip that apple off right now, you can take that apple off of there, and you won’t die. He said the day you eat that apple– that God lied to you. When you eat that apple, your eyes are gonna get open, and you’re gonna know right from wrong. And God don’t want you to have the same knowledge that he’s got, and the– the moment you eat that apple, you’re gonna know right from wrong. Now who told the truth? ‘Cause she tripped over there, and she ripped off that apple because her hon– husband was hungry, and it looked like the best thing around, and she didn’t know right from wrong, ‘cause she hadn’t eaten it yet, ‘cause she couldn’t judge it, because she didn’t eat what would give her the knowledge from right and wrong so she took the apple.
Congregation: Scattered laughter.
Jones: And she’s judged for– uh, judged for doing something that she yet has not learned to discern, ‘cause if you don’t know right from wrong in a court, they’ll– they’ll never sentence you. You– If they say that you’re not uh– if you are in– in a– you have an inability to discern right from wrong, they’ll put you in a institution or a hospital. They won’t put you in a prison. If they say that you’re unable to discern right from wrong, they’ll call you nuts, but they don’t– they don’t judge you. They won’t judge you. They won’t put you in a jail. They don’t sentence you. But here’s a God who’s supposed to’ve made somebody (claps once) that didn’t know right from wrong, didn’t know right from wrong, didn’t know their bottom side from their top side, and he sends them out there, and so naturally they’re gone get in trouble. Then he can’t even keep his own word. Said the day you eat, you’re gone die. But the serpent says, the day you eat, your eyes are going to get open, and so they ate, and they got eyes open, ‘cause they started doing stuff they hadn’t done before.
Congregation: Laughter and applause.
Jones: They went back, and Adam looked at Eve and Eve looked at Adam and said you don’t look the same. And then a little bit later, we got Cain and Abel. And a whole story and I’m going to quit right, there because there’s enough to cause you to have trouble believing. Cain– Adam and Eve are the first man and woman. They have Cain and they have Abel and Cain’s– What is it– What happened? Cain slew Abel with the jawbone of an ass [only reference to “the jawbone of an ass” is to Samson, who slew a thousand men, Judges 15:15-16]. Now that’ll left only three.
Voice in Congregation: That’s right.
Jones: It left only three, right?
Congregation: Right.
Jones: Any fool would know that left only three, but Cain took a walk over into the land of Nod and got him a wife. Where’d she come [Genesis 4] (tape garbles) A gorilla?
