(Several minutes of silence)

Jones:
(unintelligible intro) Illinois, and Bonnie thought it had, or Bonnie should (unintelligible under interruption)

Carlton Goodlett:
I think it has. Was it Illinois? (Pause) I think it went through.

Jones:
Uh– the– Anyway, uh, Sheriff [Richard] Hongisto has some trouble last night, we were able to use diathermy, and (unintelligible) and I told him thank you, said, we couldn’t do it for you, sheriff, if it wasn’t for Dr. [Carlton] Goodlett, so that made him feel real good.

Goodlett:
(unintelligible word) Illinois– did the– did the insurance go through for the physical therapy unit at the– at the Peoples Temple? (long pause while listens to someone at other end of line) Well, no, put it before my desk and let’s sign it.

Jones:
Sheriff (unintelligible word)– he won’t give us no trouble. He was–

Goodlett:
Huh?

Jones:
He’s the only one we treated. He’s the only one outside of church we treated.

Goodlett:
(unintelligible under Jones) –nobody gonna give anybody any trouble.

Jones:
Yeah, you never–

Goodlett:
Is it– is it– is in– in the blue– blue folder?

Jones:
By the way. The physical therapist said that, if you– if he could help anything of mutual cause, or your cause alone, that if you wanted to dispense it, she said, the– the Medicare– she– you know, when it’s authorized by doctor, she can– they can clip those, what is it? Those Medicare– I– I don’t understand the– the terminology. Something that would apply–

Goodlett:
Well– well, what they could do, yeah, well, they can clip those and– and use it for the– for the uh– the uh– to– to buy the equipment on (unintelligible word) church.

Jones:
Well, if I ever– I ever– whatever you suggest, I didn’t understand–

Goodlett:
Well, then– yeah, yeah, I mean, let’s– if they have them, get ‘em and turn ‘em in and– and we’ll convert it into more equipment or– or use it as– as some charity (unintelligible word under Jones) buy people medicine who– who aren’t on Medicare.

Jones:
Okay. Okay. Okay. Good, good. I’m all for it. All for it.

Goodlett:
Yeah.

Jones:
Well, that’s what I wanted to check on. Nothing else, uh–

Goodlett:
How’s Mom?

Jones:
I think she’s doing amazingly well. She got out– I got her out– She’s been involved in a senior citizen program here, she’s a district representative for Mendocino County, and that day seemed to do her a damn lot of good.

Goodlett:
Uh-huh. Good.

Jones:
We’ll see ourselves in the– in the– By the way, the uh, TV uh, uh, uh– Hongisto and Willie [Brown] were really got on the TV program for us, they uh, praised us. We didn’t expect that, but they praised our work in the church and uh– I– What about the– the– Willie said the governor [Jerry Brown] might be breakfasting with you and I and Cecil [Williams] Monday. Do you know anything about that?

Goodlett:
Well, I don’t know he said Monday. If– As soon as I find out– He– It wasn’t– it wasn’t Monday. Now if he selected this Monday, that’s great. But I will be ready for him anytime.

Jones:
I see. Well, Willie said– Willie said something about it– uh, he thought it in the– the machinery for this Monday, but I– I mean, I may have misunderstood him, and–

Goodlett:
Well, it might be in the working. You know, Willie– Willie has just come back from Sacramento and– and I haven’t been around. I was up in Rhode– Rhode Island.

Jones:
Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I knew you had. Cecil, uh– I’m on Cecil’s show uh– Did you– did you, by the way, see the way they uh, maligned Cecil? Did you see that article?

Goodlett:
No.

Jones:
It was outrageous. Man, I– if he can live through that, I’m not worried about an article.

Goodlett:
Well, he can live through it.

Jones:
They– (unintelligible word) The title at the top of it was, “Cecil Williams Says ‘Fuck the Church.’”

Goodlett:
Oh.

Jones:
(Laughs)

Goodlett:
In the– in the daily papers?

Jones:
No, no. Magazine. Playboy.

Goodlett:
Oh. I’ll have to take a look at it.

Jones:
He thought he had a friend–

Goodlett:
Yeah. Yeah.

Jones:
–and he talked too much. He said– he said about himself, he said, I thought he was a friend, and I said, uh, boy, Cecil, you don’t even talk like that to anyone unless you– I– I said that was unwise statement. But he’ll– he’ll ride through it. Okay. Be seeing you now.

Goodlett:
Okay.

Jones:
And thanks for everything.

Goodlett:
Fine.

Jones:
Bye-bye.

Goodlett:
Bye.

Part 2:

Girl: He ain’t here.

Jones:
(stumbles over words) When do you expect him?

Girl:
I don’t know. May I take a message?

Jones:
No, I’ll call again. Thanks a lot.

Part 3:

Jones: They don’t know anything about it. That’s even Jim Pugh, but you don’t say the name. You don’t know anything about the– the offer. He’s interested in your well– your well-being, uh, and uh– uh– if you don’t believe that, you can ask uh, Hedy. (Pause) He has interest– he has interest in your well-being. If you don’t believe that, ask Hedy. (Pause) Now, that– I think takes cares of all of–

Woman:
(whispers) I hope so. (unintelligible)

Jones:
Check it out with (unintelligible name) and see. Any real bad aspects it seems like we need to neutralize, do some neutralizing. But anymore, I don’t trust my own judgment. (Pause) You got me?
(tape silence for several moments)

Part 4:

Woman: Mmm-hmm. (Pause) Mm-hmm. (Pause) Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. (Pause) What they (unintelligible) is to call back at 8:30, that’s why I called down there, ‘cause we left a message for Teri to call back and it evidently didn’t get through. (Pause) Well, they just never got the message to her? She– They– They just now got that fuckin’ message to her. She called ten minutes ago on the phone, she didn’t call again, ‘cause I told her I was gonna call. They just now got that new message to her. They’re assholes in San Francisco, so she’d left a code call for Teri. And that’s how long it took ‘em to give it to her, 15 minutes. (Pause) That’s somethin’. (Pause) No, no, I know it’s not Teri’s fault. Whoever the hell is up there, that’s the reason, you know, it was to Jean Brown to call Teri, it was a code call. But she never called her back, and we’ve been waiting around, ‘cause we have to get– uh, to call back, and it just (Pause) Well. That could be. Very likely. (Long pause) Umm-hmm. Umm-hmm. (Pause) No, Tim [Stoen] isn’t there, we had to clear this with [Mike] Cartmell, ‘cause Tim was in San Francisco. He left. So we didn’t have any choice. (Pause) Okay. So, do we ask her to make this call, or not? (Pause) (unintelligible name) wants that, umm-hmm. (Pause) Umm-hmm. (Long pause) Mm-hmm. (Pause) Yeah– yeah, we’ll reach– I mean, we’ll reach her when she come, yeah, sure. I’m glad she could (unintelligible word) about it. (Long pause) Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. (Pause) Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. (Pause) Well, she doesn’t know we’ll still give her a little bit of help, right? (Pause) Mm-hmm. (Pause) Okay, okay, okay. I understand that. (Pause) We’ll have to try to (unintelligible word) them, (unintelligible) (Pause) Yeah, well, okay. Well, try (unintelligible word) get back to me. (Pause) Mm-hmm. (Pause) Okay. But they don’t tell her that till they actually meet her (unintelligible). Okay. Okay, sorry to bother you, but that put a new light on things. (Pause) Mm-hmm. Okay. Bye-bye.
