“This close-knit family moved from Mississippi, where they had been sharecroppers, to Los Angeles and then up to San Francisco to live communally after joining. They were hard-working, loving, trusting and trusted, and contributed greatly to the organization. Their father, who never joined the Temple and warned them not to go to Guyana, lived to see his worst fears realized, but joined them just three years later, his life shattered by the loss of his wife and so many of his children.
