People named:

Temple adversaries; members of Concerned Relatives:
Joe Mazor, private detective hired by Concerned Relatives

Jonestown residents:
Carol McCoy

Bible verses cited: None

Summary:

Carol McCoy, who eventually died in Jonestown, calls Joe Mazor, the detective hired by the Concerned Relatives to assist apostates in getting their relatives returned to them, and asks about his services. She says she has children in Jonestown, and wants to know how to get them back. Mazor replies cautiously, and asks her what she wants him to do. “Well, that’s kinda what I wanted to know, what I wanted you to tell me,” McCoy replies.

Mazor asks if she has certain documents that might help – guardianship, etc. – but McCoy says no. He asks if she had given permission for them to go over; she says no. He says there are a few things they could try, but that she sounds like she’s in a “terrible position for any one of them.” Before they go any further, though, he suggests a face-to-face meeting. She agrees. The balance of the call is arranging the appointment and her travel arrangements from L.A.

Given the fact that the tape was located among the Temple’s effects after the deaths, that McCoy died in Jonestown, and a few indicators on the tape itself – she whispers to someone for a pen at the very beginning of the conversation – it seems that the conversation was staged to see how Mazor went about doing his business, so that Temple members could counter his efforts.

Carol McCoy eventually met with Mazor. A transcript of her report on the meeting appears here.
