PURPOSE: To set forth information provided by the Department of State:
RECOMMENDATION: Investigative action deemed appropriate be initiated.
DETAILS: On 11/29/78, William J. Dieterich, Press Officer, Bureau of Inter-American Affairs, Department of State, advised Liaison Officer [name deleted], that he was contacted confidentially on that date by a [name deleted], whom Dieterich did not wish to identify. Dieterich’s source told him that Jim Jones [line deleted] had told the source that whoever does an autopsy on Jones should look for an interior pituitary tumor, which was the same malady suffered by the Texas Tower killer. He also said that Jones may have been suffering from a fungus infection known as coccidioiomycosis.

Dieterich’s source said that Jones’ doctor had seen him three months ago and Jones had a 103 degree fever which kept running up to the time of his death. Jones suffered fainting spells and may have suffered from urinary retention. Dr. Schacht recently has arranged for Jones to be examined by a doctor in the Soviet Embassy at Guyana and the Soviet doctor as well as [name deleted] said Jones should be hospitalized.
Jones said he could not afford to be hospitalized until after the Ryan visit. The Soviet doctor arranged for a full physical examination of Jones in either Moscow or Havannah [Havana].
