1. Our Consul had personal, private contact with [deleted description of relationship] Darrell on Jan. 11 at the People’s Temple agricultural community. Darrell appeared to be healthy, fit and well-dressed. He informed the Consul that he is not being held against his will. He laughed when he was asked if he was forced to work long hours and replied that he did work in the fields at times but was also learning about other aspects of gardening. Darrell emphasized to the Consul that for the present he is satisfied with his life at Jonestown and does not wish to return home. He told the Consul that he would write you and explain more about his life to you.
2. The Consul indicated that his meeting with Darrell was relaxed and he thought [deleted word] answers to his questions were spontaneous and genuine. In his two visits to the town the Consul has not found the conditions at the site to be as you mentioned in your letter. I hope the above information is responsive to your request. Please accept best wishes.
